So, does he untuck?
When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved
I wish we had an answer for this question

We'll have to wait until their first win of the season to find out.
My guess is that they won’t… particularly if Cameron gets his new teammates to do it.
I really don't see why we would

I think DM's hopes are a bit misplaced...
Seems like Kapler was in a different place than Edmonds when the Brewers signed him.
Kapler
I don’t think anyone anticipated Kapler doing as well as he did either.
"You have no honor!" - McClung to Fukudome
True
But then again…
Kapler had retired from baseball when the Brewers signed him, while Edmonds didn’t play last season (no interested by any teams?).
Also, Kapler was 32 when the Brewers signed him, Edmonds is 39.
Not saying that Edmonds won’t be productive… just that you can’t really compare him to Kapler.
I like it.
I like it a lot, really. As always, it depends on how Macha uses him. If he starts four or five days a week at Gomez’s expense and then gets injured on May 10, then not so good. But if he starts once or twice a week, always against RHP, then it could turn out great.
Also, cheese.

I worry more about Edmonds taking at-bats away from Gerut.
And maybe that’s unwarranted faith in Gerut, but, still, I think Gerut is a very capable option.
There's that risk
But I see Gerut at least partly as Hart insurance (as platoon or starter). Edmonds is CarGo insurance. Yes, there’s overlap there, and they both get fewer at-bats than if they were alone on the bench along with Oeltjen or somebody. But none of CarGo, Hart, Gerut, and Edmonds are certain enough to be good that the AB-loss is a bigger concern than the need for above-replacement insurance.
Also, cheese.

I've always wondered if these guys were taking steroids during their year off.
Then cycling off so that they won’t be detected?

From McCalvy:
Brewers suddenly have lots of lefty-hitting OF options for the bench: Gerut, Edmonds, Oeltjen, Stern. Plus utility man Inglett.

Not that I’d know anything about that.

I am trying to see where this gets us.
I like the fact that it is a minor league deal. A smart move for a decent bat.
But from the view of the signing, didn’t Edmonds not sign with the Cards because he didn’t want to fill a backup role? I guess the upgrade here is a platoon vs. a purely off the bench bat role.
Overall though, I am excited about this signing.

I am assuming he signed with us because he has the possibility for significant playing time in center…
Plus, there's the potential of screwing the Cards, who he approached first.

He also said he'd play for the league minimum for the cards, and is getting almost twice that, assuming he makes the team.

Define significant!
I think he will play more—barring he makes the team—than he would in St. Louis. But I don’t think it would be that much more. He is getting 2x as much here as he would in St. Louis as Mykenk suggested so that is a nice bonus. I just don’t see him figuring in the playing situation as much. Although this is just “on-paper” so anything can happen.

I would prefer that he doesn’t get significant playing time and that Gomez can be somewhat productive at the plate.

3 questions:
1) What makes you think there’s another deal?
2) What makes you think Edmonds is a viable full time player?
3) What makes you think it’d be DM’s “last” deal?
Follow: @mykenk. Read thoughts: http://mhenk.blogspot.com.
DM stated on the Brewers site that he's still open to signing Mulder to a minor league deal
But your last two questions are definitely valid.
Interesting thought
With Edmonds, Bush and Hart on the roster, the payroll would easily exceed $85M, which doesn’t give DM alot of capacity for a mid-season signing.
On the other hand, who do you think would play RF… Gerut or Edmonds? Gerut would be the logical replacement, but I don’t think the Brewers would be willing to start the season without a solid backup OF (I don’t consider Edmonds that).
He's certainly a question mark but he's worth a look
and like TheJay said it’s better than Trot Nixon

Agreed.
I don’t disagree that he’s worth a look… particularly under the terms they got him for. I just don’t see them moving Hart and leaving RF in the hands of Gerut, Edmonds and a utility player.
Granted, I’ve been wrong before.
I don't see this as a move to replace Hart
more of a we might need offense if Gomez really struggles and he’ll start vs righties

I don't think you'll see Edmonds starting in CF
As it has already been stated, his defense is not as good as it used to be. I also think that Gerut would get the start before Edmonds.
I think an injury would take Gomez out of CF before his bat. In his short MLB career, he’s hitting only .246/.292/.346, so I don’t think the expectations are set very high.
The Brewers have shown to be patient with young players, so I don’t think Gomez struggling for a part of the season will translate into a platoon situation.
I don't nescessarily disagree with you but if it happeend it wouldn't surprise me

Just curious, if he does make the roster
How has his defense been in the last few years? Has it declined greatly?

UZR/150 over the last five years (all as a CF):
2004: 1.3
2005: 9.7
2006: 7.6
2007: (-2.7)
2008: (-23.3)
Yep
Gerut is a far better option defensively than Edmonds. If Edmonds sees any time in CF, someone is paying more attention to reputation than actual skills. He’s an emergency CF at best at this point in his career.

So what it comes down to is that we owe him just his ST per diem until March 25th?
then the contract kicks in.

we'll trade him to the reds since Doug is friends with Walt Jocketty
who also had him in st. louis

I think so
Particularly since he then went to the Cubs.

This is terrible
Why sign a 39 year old defensive CF whose defensive ability has plummeted?
Oh, right, to steal AB from Gomez and further stunt his development/value. :(
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
by SRB on Jan 28, 2010 3:36 PM CST via mobile reply actions
On further consideration, this actually isn’t that terrible. Edmonds still has a lot of upside for the no-risk contract he was given. Just look how he finished in 2008 for the Cubs: 298 PA, .256/.369/.568/.937 all with an extraordinarily low .260 BABIP. He was also a significantly better (though still bad) defender in Chicago versus San Diego. His days of playing centerfield well might be over, but that’s a very nice bench addition if he can come close to repeating 2008.
I still hope he doesn’t take playing time from Gomez though.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I don't think he will.
Gerut will likely get playing time over Edmonds in CF. Edmonds could always play the corner OF positions in a pinch, but most likely will be a lefty PH option…. and possibly a DH during interleague.
So we replace Mike Cameron with a guy with zero plate discipline but wheels (Gomez), and a guy older than Cameron and on the wrong side of his good defensive days(Edmonds)…
Sounds about right.

Officer Brad Nelson
It’s likely he’ll outperform Brad Nelson who DM foolishly thought had some value, but signing another outfielder signals to me that DM is worried about Gomez’s ability which makes the JJ trade all the more painful.

Probably thinking too much
Doesn’t signing a guy to a minor league deal when he has (presumably) no intention of playing in the minors just to avoid having to make an immediate move on the 40-man roster sound like a rule-bending move Doug Melvin would complain about if other teams did it more then the Brewers?
No, it's because he is a small market that he has to make moves like this

So long as the incentives
Are only likely to be reached if he plays more than 50% of the time, then this is an okay signing. A left-handed 5th OF with bit of power is not a bad idea.
I am just not sure that he will be any better than Inglett who will be cheaper, I suppose we will have spring training to find out.
