BCB Community Prospect Rankings: Vote for #2
As most probably would have predicted, Alcides Escobar won the voting for prospect #1. Voting for #2 opens now and will remain open until 4 pm tomorrow. Just like last year, a new poll will open each day to select the next player added to the list, and we'll keep naming players until we've reached a point arbitrarily selected by you, the reader, at a later date.
Here are the five candidates for the #2 spot:
Zach Braddock
Mat Gamel
Brett Lawrie
Jonathan Lucroy
Jake Odorizzi
Follow the jump for more on the nominees, then vote in the poll below. Voting will remain open for 24 hours, with voting for #3 opening at 4 pm tomorrow.

more choices
after 1 and 2 will the list of options increase?

The plan right now
Is to have 5 choices for votes 1-5, and expand the field to 10 after that.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Weird to see all the love for Lawrie
Or has Gamel’s stock dropped that much?
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Has to be Gamel
Lawrie is a pretty good bet to far outpace any other prospect in the system down the road, but he doesn’t have the professional numbers yet to back it up.
Gamel’s career minor league line (all levels): .302/.374/..487/.861
Lawrie’s minor league line (primarily A ball): .274/.340/.436/.776
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
His numbers from last year overall were better than Lawrie's in an apparent down year
I’ll vote for Lawrie at 3 but I think Gamel deserves this spot.

Wow. Couldn’t disagree more with people voting for Gamel over Lawrie. Gamel has stone hands. Literally. Stone hands. His bat has to be not just good, but spectacular in order for him to have positive value to the team. And his bat was only good last year, maybe even just average considering his position (1B/3B). You also have to take into consideration his age for the level. He was 24 at AAA. That is not exactly young.
Lawrie, otoh, was young for A ball and hit just as well as Gamel did when Gamel played in A ball. Lawrie’s defense isn’t much either, but it is certainly better than Gamel’s.
BTW, I’ve lurked for 3+ years and joined just to make this post. I feel that strongly about it.

Hmmm.
How much did you watch Gamel last year? From everything I saw in the majors I thought he looked pretty decent, probably not exactly average yet but maybe a -10 defender with the potential to get to average eventually. I know we have to take Lawrie’s production in comparison to his age, but doesn’t the fact that Gamel is a lot closer to the majors and has performed against higher level competition enough to give him an advantage if you consider their hitting skill to be about equal?

yes

My understanding
is that Lawrie isn’t exactly the second coming at 2b. Scouts seem to agree he’ll probably land somewhere in the outfield. Sort of ‘pot meet kettle’, if you ask me.

I think you're wrong

I should be doing homework.

I thought that line was REALLY funny. I almost rec'd it.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
and now I did.
I literally did.

Gamel was in A ball only a year behind Lawrie. At age 19 he was mashing Rookie League pitching (.872 OPS) and at age 20 – at a comparable level to Lawrie’s age 19 season – he was OPSing 22 points higher than Lawrie against the same level of competition.
I agree that Gamel’s defense has always been his biggest weakness, but Lawrie hasn’t proved himself enough as a defender yet either to be making up ground on defensive considerations. Since they’re both primarily hitting prospects at this point, I think you have to go with the guy with the longer and more impressive track record (at every level)
I think Lawrie has the potential to be a much better prospect than Gamel – both if he develops as a hitter and advances through the minors faster and if he settles in to a position defensively – but as of 2010 Gamel is still better, in my opinion.

Darn, missed it by a half hour...
…I would have voted for Gamel. Can I get two more votes for my boy with only one t?
I'm actually really disappointed in this result
