Getting to know your new 2011 coaches
The 2011 coaching staff has been revealed and includes a few surprises. There might be some names in there you don't recognize, so here's a quick primer:
Jerry Narron is the new bench coach. He's managed in the big leagues for parts of five seasons (two with the Rangers, three with the Reds), most recently in 2007. Doug Melvin hired him to his first big league managerial job with the Rangers in 2001.
Wikipedia says Narron has been working as a "special assignments scout and front office consultant" for the Rangers since 2008.
Rick Kranitz replaces Rick Peterson as pitching coach. He's spent five seasons as a major league pitching coach with the Marlins and Orioles. Wikipedia says he was Baseball America's Major League Coach of the Year in 2006 with the Marlins. He's spent the last three years with the Orioles, whose team ERAs those seasons have been 4.59 (2010), 5.15 (2009) and 5.13 (2008).
Garth Iorg is the new first base coach and he's an internal hire: He's been the organization's minor league infield instructor for several seasons and was the team's interim third base coach for the final 12 games in 2008.
He's also managed eight seasons in the minors in the Blue Jays organization, most recently in 1997.
I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere, but it appears the Brewers will once again have no Spanish speaking coaches on staff in 2011.

5 hours ago, in a meeting at the front office of Miller Park...
Doug Melvin: “Gentlemen, welcome to another offseason of Brewers baseball. Here’s a list of the coaches were inviting to Spring Training this year.”
Gord Ash: “Rick Kranitz? Garth Iorg? I’ve never heard of half of these guys! And the ones I have heard of are way past their prime.”
Bruce Seid: “This guy here is dead.”
Doug Melvin: “Cross him off, then!”

Well Played
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
I think it's an 'i' not an 'L'
garth iorg. Garth Iorg. But that does not change the fact that Garth Lorg sounds like Dark Lord.
That's correct
And the last name is pronounced with a soft “g” and a silent “i”. Like ‘orgy’, without the “y”.

I don't care.
My nickname for him from here on out is The Dark Lord.

Ouch...
No Spanish speaking coaches. I can’t say that this is a smart move. When 2 of our biggest projects speak pretty much only Spanish, you HAVE to accomodate.

Couldn't they just hire a translator?
It seems like it would be better to have the coach you want with a translator than a coach you kind-of want and not need one.
It might be an issue of translation
It might feel more comfortable for a player to be able to directly talk to a coach, instead of having a translator nearby at every point to translate everything that is said. It could make communication easier (not risking losing anything in translation) and just create a bond that would make the player feel more comfortable.

Agreed
but I would think they would weigh that potential advantage against other potential advantages of the coach-you-want. If there isn’t a Spanish-speaking coach who fits the philosophy and goals of the team, there is no sense in making one fit. (Not that I’m speaking with anyone specific in mind, or any real knowledge at all.)
How do you know none of them speak spanish. It wouldn't surprise me if some of them speak it as a second language.
I agree, though It would be nice to have a latino coach.

That's the reason I said I hadn't seen it confirmed.
It’s possible I’m wrong and someone does speak the language, but there are clearly no native speakers.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Doesn't meant they don't have spanish speaking people on staff.
I’d be shocked if they didn’t. You don’t hire a coach because he speaks a specific language. You hire a good coach, and maybe a translator.

Kranitz was going to be the Astros minor league pitching coordinator
Houston has to wonder why their new hires keep winding up in Milwaukee.
I never use a big word when a diminutive word would suffice.
We're just as bad at evaluating personnel
And a slightly more desirable franchise to work for.

Houston has to wonder how more than one team ended up wanting to hire Baltimore's former pitching coach.
Now that's great tasting chicken!

Peterson
So, what happens to him now? Becomes the highest paid minor league pitching coach?
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I doubt that.
As stated elsewhere, it depends on the contract. I’d find it hard to believe he’d be “reassigned” within the organization. If that’s really an option, why don’t we see managers get “reassigned” instead of getting fired? Just send Macha down to be the bench coach in Bevard County, and if he quits, then we don’t have to pay him. I doubt this “re-assigning” thing happens without a completely new contract.

So we agree.
No work, no show means not being reassigned. He still collects his check but never shows up or does any work anywhere for the Brewers.
Just like Ned in 2009.
When did we start talking about Suppan?

a lot of jobs have a "no compete" clause
hell, when I worked at office max, I had to agree to not work for staples, office depot, best buy, et al for at least 6 months after leaving my job.

That's awesome
With all of that industrial insider knowledge, you could have brought down the whole organization!

Also...
Did Roenicke actually pick all these guys or did Melvin have something to do with it? I don’t see where Roenicke knows any of these guys… particularly Narron and Iorg.
Well, if nothing else, they pretty much cleaned house… I think Sedar, Sveum and Kyles are the only holdovers.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Seems like Melvin picked Narron
I was disappointed with the lack of hookers but the pancakes were delightful
That was my impression
Although I do think Roenicke had a say, it’s hard to think he didn’t. New managers likely don’t have the sway to get higher end friends or colleagues away from other clubs just yet, I’m sure he was willing to give Melvin’s recommendations a shot if he knew them at all.
Worth a shot I guess…I just hope Roenicke does things his way still. I’m still very fond of his hiring.
