Primary Brewers Backup Catcher?
Who do you think should be the backup catcher behind Gregg Zaun? Jonathon Lucroy who was drafted in 2007 has hit .297 over three minor league seasons along with 182 RBIs and 33 HRs. Angel Salome, .316 average, 344 RBIs 47 HRs over six minor league seasons. George Kottaras, .235 average over two major league seasons, 10 RBI and 1 HR. Many say that Salome doesn't possess the same talent level as Lucroy. Scouting reports also have Lucroy listed as a significantly higher prospect than Salome. In your opinion, who would you have as your primary backup catcher?

Unfortunately,
I don’t know enough about all three players to pick one. I think the backup will be someone who is strong defensively, not necessarily a good hitter (that would be a bonus).
Maybe someone can post how the three rank in those terms?
The spelling of his last name and inclusion of his first name are vital components in that statement.

Kottaras
Not that I think he’s the better player of the three but I’d like both other prospects to get a bit more playing time rather than pulling a Gamel on the bench in the big leagues.
This is the winning answer for me.
The question then becomes where to put Salome and Lucroy. They should both be in AAA this year, but it isn’t fair to either one to have them both there.

as long as we're on the subject
Has Rivera signed with anyone else? or was he signed to a brewers minor league deal?
wow
Fascinating was one of about 13 adjectives that came to mind when watching that video.
Where is our video like that for Kottaras?

One thing missing from the video
They didn’t dig up a clip of Mike Rivera playing Jimmy Pena in For the Love of the Game. Incidentally, that role led to an amusing though presumably inaccurate imdb page for him.
Who calls the game best?????????
Which one of these new catchers is the best at calling a game? I liked how J.K. took care of the staff. I believe this is a very underrated aspect of catching. With our new pitchers and a new catcher is there gonna be chemistry there? I can’t believe Wisconsin native Washburn could be had fairly cheap… I realize that could be possibly 4 lefty starters. I would put Soup as a long man, and Parra as a the 7th inning man LaTroy setup and then Trevortime. So sign Washburn he wants to play in MIL AND WITH OUR HISTORY YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH ARMS…..

seriously? I could call a good game too:P
and as to the arms, you do realize we have a 25-man roster that needs to have both pitchers and position players on it. So, yes, at some point you CAN have too many arms.

Just wait
None of these catchers we picked up has ever played a full season so in my opinion it is gonna take a long time before whoever is the starter to learn every pitcher. So dont tell me that just anyone can come in there and call a game oh I’M SORRY EXCEPT PAGS… The staff sucked because the pitchers sucked, and your gonna find out this year now that we have a new catcher who has never caught any of these guys how it is gonna take time for them too work well together. Wow a 25 man roster dump Stetter, and whoever bitched about 5 million for Wasburn that means you could get 2 Suppans and have 2 million to jerk off with. Hats off to the owner Mark Atta… for giving Melvin the money to spend, and if they could get another player that could help I’m sure ownership would cough it up.

My bad
I meant to say you could get 2 Wasburns for Suppan and play with the other 2 million. I believe with Looper we signed him for 2 years with a 3rd year option, but it would cost more than the Brewers wanted to pay so he can sign anywhere because he is a free agent. Should of done that with Suppan and we would have had the millions back for his crappy season coming up. He will be lucky to win 12 games which would be a million dollars per win… nice pick up mustache.

Please stop, you're only making things worse...
“I believe with Looper we signed him for 2 years with a 3rd year option, but it would cost more than the Brewers wanted to pay so he can sign anywhere because he is a free agent.”
What? Looper was signed to a one year contract with a team option for a second year. If Looper had been signed to a 2 year contract, the Brewers would’ve had to pay him regardless if they didn’t want to.
“Should of done that with Suppan and we would have had the millions back for his crappy season coming up.”
Hindsight is 20/20. Be honest… did you really complain about the contract when Suppan was first signed or are you complaining about it now because of how he has pitched?
I was stoked when I first heard about the Suppan signing.
I was misinformed.

I wasn't stoked
2006 was my first season as an avid Brewers fan. When I heard about the signing I looked up his stats, even as a novice baseball fan thought to myself “Huh? Why did we sign this guy?”

Actually it was a mutual option.
Not that it makes a difference, as it doesn’t change your point, but just thought I’d point it out… because I’m a smartass.

Because having a catcher who had caught those pitchers for a full year really helped them out last year.

Can someone please translate?
“None of these catchers we picked up has ever played a full season”
Zaun played in 133 games in 2005.
“So dont tell me that just anyone can come in there and call a game”
Let’s take a look around the league. The Cubs had a rookie behind the plate in 2008 (Soto). You know how they did? Top 3 pitching staff in the NL. Last year, the Mariners finished as the top pitching staff in the AL… with a rookie catching most of the games (Johnson).
“The staff sucked because the pitchers sucked, and your gonna find out this year now that we have a new catcher who has never caught any of these guys how it is gonna take time for them too work well together. "
Let me get this straight… it was the pitchers’ fault that they were bad last season, but if they’re bad this season it’s the catcher’s fault?
“dump Stetter”
You have a better lefty available for the bullpen?
“whoever bitched about 5 million for Wasburn”
Not sure who you’re referring to. I don’t recall anyone complaining about giving $5M to Washburn. The point was that Washburn TURNED DOWN $5M from the Twins. In other words, HE WANTED MORE MONEY. Granted, the price may have come down now that no other teams were willing to offer more to him, but the fact is, when the Brewers signed Davis earlier this year, Washburn wanted more than $5M.
For your first point, I think he was saying that Zaun and Treanor have never played a full season with our pitching staff, as Kendall had. I’m pretty sure it’s part of the Kendall calls a good game argument. Because, you know, Zaun, at his age, couldn’t call his way out of kkiddie pool…..
Then again, I don’t speak JSblogs, so I’m not the best translator.

Are you serious?
Please explain how Kendall “took care of the staff” last season and had chemistry when the Brewers had one of the worst pitching staffs in the NL.
As far as Washburn, who says he could be had cheap? He turned down an offer from the Twins for $5M last month. With the payroll already well over $80M, I doubt the Brewers could afford him now.
How does Looper fit into this situation?

Dickeybangbang Apologist.
My thoughts on this riveting thread.
1.) Asking if a catcher “calls a good game” is an entirely defensible question. As I talk to and read about pitchers who have pitched at a high level, I have concluded that there are 3 types of catchers: a.) bad catchers b.) catchers who call pitches based on hitters weaknesses without regard to whether a pitcher can reliably make those pitches on a given day. c.) catchers who call pitches based on what a pitcher can effectively throw.
I have no doubt that there is a tangible ability by a catcher to “call a good game” — to think otherwise defies sensibility and logic IMO. That said, I don’t think a person can watch a few games and somehow discern which catchers can call games better than others. I also think it is abused as a cliche, and also overvalued. It is tangible but hard to separate and define.
2.) You can’t get orange juice from a lemon — Jeff Suppan is a lemon.
3.) Gregg Zaun has caught:
Bush with the Blue Jays
Davis with the Rangers
Suppan with the Royals
So signing Zaun makes a lot of sense for our pitching staff (whether intended or accidental).
4.) SJLee — A lot of posters were very wary about the Suppan signing at the time it happened. Many people pointed out at the time of the signing, that the backloaded nature of the contract would make it impossible to trade him. We were also concerned about having to pay Suppan when Hardy, Hart and Weeks were all hitting their Arby years – that turned out to not be such a big problem. Certainly the Suppan signing had its share of support – however there were detractors at the time.
5.) Hats of to Mark Atta… for having 2 million to jerk off with. I don’t imagine Sal Bando had any jerk off money at his disposal.
6.) As an aside — I let my wife down on Valentine’s Day this year, I think VD is stupid however, my wife read me the riot act. I am sort of pissed off about it, so….
Next year I am going to give her a “Dickeybangbang Coupon Book” — which with have coupons for the “Dickeybangbang dinner and a movie”, “Dickeybangbang backrub” and the headliner coupon the “Dickeybangbang 5 Minutes Anything Goes”.
In 2012 she will be content with her box of candy from Target.

Nice... hope you weren't in the doghouse very long.
BTW – My comment about Suppan’s contract was solely directed at Dickeybangbang. For some reason, he comes across as a guy who probably loved the Suppan signing at the time.
Any post
that can associate “VD” with “Dickeybangbang” is a winner in my book.

VOTE JONATHAN LUCROY!!!!
I have known Jonathan Lucroy since he was about 11 years old, as I was his scorekeeper for several seasons and spent alot of time with him in the dugout!! There is no one with more HEART and passion for the game that you could want behind the plate! Not taking anything away from Kottaras or Salome, but Lucroy IS your man!!!!
There are plenty of guys with heart and passion in the minors...
It’ll be his performance on the field that’ll determine if he gets on the MLB roster.
