Blast From The Past: Chris Capuano as Bad Luck
If Chris Capuano takes the mound for the Brewers in 2010, it will not only be a story of recovery and perseverance but also an attempt to end his still-active streak of team losses in his last 22 major league appearances. His streak of team losses in 18 consecutive starts is a major league record going back to at least 1954. His 22 straight appearances in team losses is just over halfway to Wilbur Wood's fantastic record of 42 games over parts of three seasons.

don't remind me!
I did realize that. I hope Capuano comes back…if only to break that streak. The 2nd half of the ‘07 season was such a severe letdown; Cappy’s troubles were only a small part of that but enough of one that I can’t forget it.
Wilbur Wood
I always enjoyed watching him pitch —
Did you know Wilbur Wood started 97 games in 1972-1973 — The most ever by a pitcher in 2 consecutive seasons — Even Cy Young and Jack Chesboro couldn’t handle that sort of activity.
The 1971-3 seasons that were very special seasons in pitcher abuse — The top ten IPs for pitchers since 1930
1.) Wood 1972 376.2
2.) Lolich 1971 376
3.) Feller 1946 371.1
4.) Wood 1973 359.1
5.) Trout 1944 352.1
6.) Roberts 1953 346.2
7.) Carlton 1972 346.1
8.) G. Perry 1973 344
9.) Feller 1941 343
10.) G. Perry 1972 342.2
Dusty Baker became a starter in 1972. Coincidence? (Baker broke in with ATL, Perry, Wood, Lolich were AL pitchers, but still…)
At any rate Wood had 5 seasons with 42, 49,48,42,43 starts — He completed 89 of these games, won 20 in the first 4 seasons, and lost 20 in the last — and then his arm died for some reason.
I know this is supposed to be about Cappy but Wilbur Wood is far more fascinating.
Wood was alledgedly 36 in this baseball card, from his last season…

I met Wood once, couldn’t have been a nicer guy.

Depends on if Trenni walks into the lockerroom
then wood is pretty likely.

it was the only relevant name I could think of on short notice
unless Anna Kornikova has taken a microphone.

Wow
He could have easily achieved 200 wins had they given him the ball.
