Friday's Frosty Mug
Some things to read while starting over from the beginning.
We're roughly 24 hours away from pitchers and catchers officially reporting to spring training in Maryvale, and Adam McCalvy sat down with Ken Macha this week to get his thoughts on the upcoming season. The link is worth a click, but here's a summary if you're pressed for time: Macha acknowledges that he got off to a rough start with the team last spring. His strategy for 2010 is to do the same thing and hope they respond differently. Best of luck with that.
Aside from that, yesterday's biggest news was the unveiling of a new alternate away jersey, with "Milwaukee" written across the chest instead of "Brewers." Clearly, this will make them easier to ship home after road trips. You can pick one up at the Brewer team store at Miller Park or at the park in Maryvale, and receive free tickets to upcoming games as part of the deal.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers dominate our minor league notes today:
- The season finale of The Offseason is up, containing all your favorite memories from its brief existence.
- Meanwhile, Rattler Radio has a song that will be stuck in your head all day.
On Power Rankings and whatnot:
- Larry Dobrow of CBS Sports has the Brewers 22nd, 4th in the NL Central. (h/t BBTF)
- Twinkie Town has the Brewers 16th, projected for 79.8 wins, and third in the Central.
There's still time to sign up to win free stuff in the final days of our Brewer Advent Calendar: You have until 4 pm today to sign up to win a WhatifSports Gift Certificate, and until 4 pm tomorrow to sign up to win a ball autographed by members of the 2009 Huntsville Stars. Before you sign off for the day today, be sure to check back here at 4 for the final giveaway.
Around baseball:
Angels: Avoided arbitration with Erick Aybar, who will earn $2.05 million in 2010.
Astros: Won their arbitration case with Wandy Rodriguez, who will earn $5 million in 2010.
Dodgers: Signed Eric Gagne to a minor league deal.
Marlins: Signed reliever Mike MacDougal to a minor league deal.
Nationals: Starter Ross Detwiler underwent surgery to repair a torn hip flexor and will not be ready in time for Opening Day.
Pirates: Reliever Joel Hanrahan has been diagnosed with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow and may not be ready for Opening Day.
Looking for a buy-low candidate this spring? The Marlins are reportedly upset with reliever Renyel Pinto, who missed the team's mandatory Fan Fest activities. Pinto has a 3.70 ERA in 224 career relief appearances (including a 3.23 ERA in 73 appearances last season), so this seems like a somewhat silly thing to get worked up over.
Wisconsin Sports Tap completed their five part NL Central Preview series today with a look at the Cardinals. They note some injury risks and potential regressions, but arrive at a conclusion we'll probably all reach sooner or later: This is a pretty good team and the odds-on favorite to win the Central.
Happy birthday to former Brewer pitching coach Dave Stewart, who turns 53.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're trying to figure out how much to tip the pizza guy. (h/t C. Trent Rosecrans)
Drink up.

Wow
The dude pitched (poorly) in a low-level independent league last year after being released for refusing to have surgery, and you’re willing to give me a 300% return on a bet that he won’t pitch in the majors this year? Can I bet my house?

To be fair, thefreewheelin76
didn’t ask for the odds that Gagne would make a good appearance this year. He also didn’t specify which “majors.” Gagne could always make it to the top level of a Canadian baseball league.
100%
He’ll be in Spring Training Camp. So he will be in a Dodgers jersey. After that? Maybe 10 %. Gagne is getting old. The Dodgers would have to have some kind of injury (or a lot of them) in order for Gagne to be called up. He’s not even on the 40 man right now. So they would have to let someone else pass threw waivers before Gagne pitches in the regular season
Hmmm...
Didn’t think the post would get dissected this much. Appearance=Throwing a pitch in a Major League Game. And my guess is if he makes that pitch it will not be in a critical situation in a game and definatly not the season. My percentage is <10%.
by thefreewheelin76 on Feb 19, 2010 11:08 AM CST up reply actions
I think I'd go less than 10%, too.
Actually, since team doctors told him he needed surgery last spring and he still hasn’t had it, I’d be relatively surprised if he passes his ST physical.

Pre Sale
So everyone has heard about how the Cubs have offered fans to buy tickets before they all went on sale today for a premium of about 15% above face. (I bring this up now because I am in the virtual Cubs waiting room to get my yearly tickets to a game at Wrigley).
But it got me thinking…How soon before the Brewers start to offer that type of deal? I figure its a great money maker for the team but you probably have to have the demand first.
people still WANT to go to Wrigley?
Better question: How long until that dump falls apart?

Quite a ways, I would imagine
It works for the Cubs because everyone knows that every game will sell out, with the majority of tickets going to season ticket holders. Until the Brewers are selling out almost every June-October game by late May it won’t work.
But when they hit the 3 million mark for attendance this year expect either parking or admission to increase for 2011. Maybe both.

It appears
as if quite a few people took part in the pre sale. Because when I was able to get in to buy tickets, I was looking for 4 seats for a day game during the week (granted it was a Friday), and couldnt even get 4 in a row. Of the 3 games I was looking at, couldnt even get 2 together anymore.
Looks like Stub Hub will be the way to go.
Got my tickets just now
For the Brewers series in August.
The Cubs have most of their games sell out the day that tickets go on sale so they can charge the 20% increase.
If the Brewers did that, people would just wait until the regular priced tickets when on sale and buy them then since there isn’t much incentive to buy them early.

We’re trying for June against the Angels on Friday. Wife was able to get in but couldnt buy 4 tickets. From the looks of it, we may have to go stub hub if we want that day. Ugh.

I kept trying after I got in and got the “too many requests” message. After a while I was able to get through and purchase.

Wait until a couple of weeks before a game you want to attend, and buy them on Craigslist or Ebay at a huge discount because people bought tickets in March for September games they’re not sure they’ll be able to attend.

If the players don’t like what Macha does about their suggestions and therefore do not go to him with future ones, that’s the players fault.
But you’re right, for the most part, it’s probably the Manager’s fault.
Shruggity
If the players don’t like what Macha does about their suggestions and therefore do not go to him with future ones, that’s the players fault.
I’m willing to give partial credit for that, because we all know that guy who assumes you’re not paying attention just because you disagree.
With that said, if a player tries to address a concern, doesn’t get it addressed and doesn’t go back in the future because he feels Macha wasn’t listening, doesn’t care or will retaliate against dissension, then it’s back to being his fault.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
They aren’t going to go to him with problems if they don’t’ trust him either. Macha never really went out and backed his players on the field. We can argue back and forth about whether he should get kicked out of games and argue calls, but I get the feeling that players, not all, didn’t exactly trust him.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
To the first question... yes, particularly if the company is going down the tubes.
As KLSnow pointed out, you don’t fire the entire team, you fire management.
Not only started him
on back to back days but also had him batting leadoff.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
JJ Hardy, *cough*
I don’t know. I think he had Kendall in there because all of the pitchers raved about his defense. I’d rather have had Rivera playing another game every week, but I don’t think he would have performed much better.
There’s a few cases where he left players in the lineup too much, but I’m not entirely sure how much input DM has in that aspect.
He certainly gives his players ample oppurtunities to get out of their slumps, but he draws the line.
Bill Hall lost his starting job in June. I don’t think that’s necessarily unfair. He was given the oppurtunity during April and May.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
Macha’s gonna get talked about no matter what he does. You gotta have some amount of trust in your players. It’s not his fault that Jeff Suppan can’t pitch. It’s not his fault that Doug Melvin didn’t give him the players to do the job. I think Macha made the most outta what he got. Could he have done better? Yeah, probably. But he’s not the only one to blame. Melvin’s inactivity during the offseason, Hardy having one foot out the door, Hart thinkin we hate him, Hart being right about a lot of us, all these things account for the sub 500 record. But that’s why Hardy is in a Twins jersey, and why Doug Davis, Randy Wolf, Gregg Zaun and LaTroy Hawkins are brewers now. Gotta give Macha a chance. If he doesn’t get us above 500 this year, than he should get fired. If we are in the hunt come september, than he should stay.
I think the following applies to Macha.
Insanity is doing the same thing the same way and expecting a different result.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Possibly, but it's also impossible to change your personality, so why expect anything different?
Shruggity
Maybe because it alienate many players.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Its not impossible to alter your personality
But the first step in any kind of change is a desire to do so…for whatever reason you so choose.
That’s akin to believing that fate is what guides your life, and free will is, in fact, a series of events that you think you are choosing but in fact are pre-determined.
"If we want to sign a Type A free agent, we would lose a second-round pick, but we don't have a way to get picks back. Our whole Draft process needs to be redone."

If all pizza places raised their prices by 2 dollars, and eliminated the delivery charge, people would complain much more than they do about the delivery charge.
Shruggity
And it'd be significantly more unfair
Because the people who pick up their pizza would be paying for service they’re not using.

As the resident Oregonian, I feel I should chime in
It does help with the handicapped. I know that here in Wisconsin, you can get people to pump your gas for you if you are handicapped, but I’ve heard that it’s difficult to get the attention of some stations. It also helps with joblessness though… which they need with a 10% unemployment rate right now. It’s even more important when you consider that most of the gas pumpers tend to be young adults with higher unemployment rates.
The people pumping your gas are also specially trained to handle any possible problems with the pump, ranging from nozzle malfunction to fire issues. Since pumps are monitored more, it also cuts down on the costs of repairs, since attendants know how to fix most problems. And, it helps to cut down on drive-offs, since they yell at you if you try to grab the nozzle yourself.
#CounsellWSMVP10 - realize the dream
It's actually pretty close
In Eugene, where I grew up, the cheapest price is $2.59/gallon for unleaded. In some places though, it’s as low as $2.38/gallon. But, if the stations didn’t have to pay the attendees, yeah it would probably be cheaper.
#CounsellWSMVP10 - realize the dream
Do vacationers unused to mandatory gas attendant usage...
… ever get arrested for disorderly behavior when they yell back? Pretty sure if I drove into Oregon (something I’m thinking about doing in about 6 weeks), started to pump my own gas only to be yelled at by the attendant I’d probably start yelling back before I figured out what the hell was going on…

You're tipping in acknowledgement of service performed
The same reason you tip at a full-service restaurant, and not at McDonald’s.
I’ve been in the restaurant business for more than 10 years. If there’s anything that aggravates you, its some guy who develops an entitlement reason to not tip simply to cover up the fact that they are either cheapskate asshats or too ignorant to understand why they are tipping. I also love the “its not my fault that your bosses want to screw you over by paying you $2.33/hour instead of a real wage, and I’m not going to pay your wages for them” guy. How is it that guy doesn’t realize that I could pay all of my servers $10/hour, but then he’s going to be paying ME $20 for a hamburger. Dummy.

problem is
the pizza joint keeps the money to themselves 95% of the time. Yeah, some of that money goes to insuring any accidents that happen to the cars when “on duty”, but the driver doesn’t see one cent of it.
And i think the “additional service” should be compensated…with a tip. not an increase in the price of the pizza (it’s the same pizza).

not to get into a political argument...
if the places would just bother to pay their employees the minimum wage…but there’s that loophole, you see….
one of the grocery stores i used to go to had a sign up “don’t tip the people bringing groceries to your car—we pay them the state-mandated wage.” Tips: just the excuse businesses have to treat workers like crap.
I'd be all for raising the minimum wage for people like delivery drivers, waitresses, etc.
But I do think tipping should still be part of that process, as an incentive for making an effort to provide good service.
The side challenge of tipping a pizza guy is that factors that should come into play in tip determination aren’t known until later. If my order is screwed up, or my pizza is cold, or the delivery guy had the box upside down and all my toppings are stuck to the top of the box, I don’t know that until they’re long gone with my money.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
In Oregon
Servers and the such are paid minimum wage… and they are tipped like they would be in Wisc.
I really despise people that make a big deal about tipping.

Tipping is like Jeff Suppan's contract
You give the money after you have received the services if you receive good service. The tip you leftdoes nothing to guarantee that youy will get good service the next time you sit down to eat. We paid for what Suppan did and are now regreating the “tip” we gave him as his “service” has been awful after receiving the “tip”

"The tip you left does nothing to guarantee that you will get good service the next time you sit down to eat."
No it doesn’t guarantee good service, but it can exert an influence in either direction, speaking as a guy who was a waiter through parts of both college and law school.
And bad tipping is a virtual guarantee of bad service the next time.
Or worse. See the filmography of Ryan Reynolds and/or Justin Long for more information.

What a stupid sign.
I bagged groceries when i was 15, and they told us not to take tips. it didn’t stop us from taking them. Do you really think the bagboy isn’t going to take a tip if it’s given to them? The store just comes out looking like a bunch of jerks by putting up that sign.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I'm sure it doesn't stop bagboys from taking them.
But I’d guess it deters some customers from giving them out.

A lot of older women would ask you to take their groceries to their car.
They would tip you pretty rewardingly. I’m sure the store wants their workers to not accept the money, as they want to say, “It’s simply part of our caring service.” But putting a sign up telling customers not to tip seems like it is sending the wrong message.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I worked one summer at a grocery store where you were expected to take groceries out to the car for everyone
Only one person tipped me, but I wasn’t inclined to try and get tips anyway.
In most retail environments
You’re just not allowed to take tips. I had a friend nearly get fired once because they helped solve someone’s problem and received booze in return.

My forehead has bruises as well
from reading the comments on the original post, as well as this other link. It’s as simple as this for me: if you don’t have enough to tip, you don’t have enough to order delivery(or eat at a sitdown restaurant either). The delivery fee is just there to make the food look cheaper than it actually is. As a terrible side effect, it allows cheapskates to feel like they’ve done right by the driver while stiffing them. I’m a driver myself, and we get $6/hr plus $1.25 a run out of a $2 delivery fee. I don’t get any kind of gas reimbursement, so round trip to some places can actually be a net loss for me. As in, I would have been better of in the warm store than out in the cold and snow delivering to jerks who don’t tip. I don’t get too upset about tips, because decent people help even it out, but how fair is that? Someone who treats you fairly pays more, and cheapskates get a discount!
