Monday's Mug is under Dachshund Delay
Hey folks,
Sorry to have to do this to you (and on a Monday, no less) but there won't be a Mug today. Gorman is sick and needs to get to the vet this morning and I'm on a tight schedule today, so I'm most likely not going to be able to come back and finish it later.
If you still need your fix, feel free to scroll down and read Noah's Weekend Mug. And if you have a link that you can't wait to discuss, feel free to leave it in the comments so others can enjoy it as well.
The Mug will return at its normal time tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience, thanks for understanding.

Poor little guy
Hope he’s OK.

Yep -- Hope he is OK as well.

Surprise, Surprise, it's from a Cubs fan.
Need I elaborate any further.

Yeah, I stopped reading after the review of Wrigley.
If Old Style, obstructed views, and crumbling concrete is your idea of a good time, I think I can safely disregard everything you say.

I honestly think crumbling concrete...
…is his idea of a good time, as he ranks County Stadium higher than Miller Park. Now, mind you, I didn’t hate County, but by its end of life it was, well, EOL. Dude is a Cub fan who hates domes.
No kidding
And his reasons to hate Busch III are kind of weird. It’s biased, just as I’m sure some of my Wrigley hatred (Field is nice.. but it’s a dump) is a bit biased. Busch III is a really nice stadium, navigating it was a bit weird at first, but I get it now. They really control the flow of people out very well, not a lot of chaos like exiting MP. Very controlled, very fluid.
a few links
project prospect unveiled its top 50 over the weekend and held a chat, noting this about lawrie (who they ranked 40th):
If Lawrie can stay at second, his value will be huge there. He’s a lesson in how to whip the bat, and while he’ll K some, he’ll get more than his share in the power department. Once he gets stronger in his upper body, his bat will be under more control and he’ll bump his average and lower his K’s. He’s a fun hitter to watch and if he irons out his bat and plays decent defense he’ll be above-average there
speaking of chats, THwitter notes he’s doing one this afternoon.

Any ideas on a good question to ask TH? I’m thinking something like:

Baseball Prospectus
At some point this week BP should be posting their Top 11 Prospects for the Brewers, not sure on the exact date, but I will post the list when it becomes available.
Wednesday.
According to Twitter.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Thanks for your concern everyone.
We’re home from the vet and Gorman is going to be fine. I’ll spare you the details, some of which are moderately gross. I’m tied up for the afternoon, so there still won’t be a Mug today, but I understand today’s Advent Calendar will be posted a little early, and it’s a relatively controversial fellow, so it should give you something to discuss for the afternoon.
Again, thanks to everyone that expressed concern.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
well, i didn't express concern
but i was. it just seemed redundant to say. besides, the health of the rally lobster impacts us all.

Really?
A Bud Selig Statue at home plate?
REALLY????
Is it just going to be constructed to remind us of a much worse time?
I vote the make it out of some cheaper materials because they only had so much budget room available.

Maybe to remind us of the only reason Milwaukee has a team to begin with?

I've struggled over this in the past
Is it wrong for me to harbor mostly negative feelings towards Bud, even though I’m appreciative that he brought baseball to Milwaukee?
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
No
He played a big part, but he needed backers originally. And one of them has been quite outspoken about how much of a back stabber Selig was. I cant remember the guys name, but he was a judge here in Milwaukee. He was a member of SABR if I’m not mistaken.
I’m glad there is a team here, but I will always think of Selig as a used car salesman.
I'll acknowledge Selig's contribution to bringing a team to Milwaukee
But the statue should somehow acknowledge that it also took years to repair the damage he did to it.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
I agree, I'm just pointing out there's a non-terrible reason for this statue to exist.
Follow: @mykenk. Read thoughts: http://mhenk.blogspot.com.
Agreed
But it’s going to be a pretty unpopular statue.

Or it'll be like all the other ones... take a picture of it once, and then kinda forget it's there.

It gives us a chance to see Bud covered in bird crap.
Isn’t that reason enough?

I'm guessing the statue will also be routinely covered in other things.
And it might be hard to get the urine smell out after a while.

Say what you will about his abilities as commissioner or how cheap he was as an owner
He is the reason we have the Brewers in the first place, and the reason they’re still here.

agree.
he’s secured baseball for the town he loves, though arguably at the cost of it loving him back.
besides, i don’t get all the bile focused on his reign as commissioner. he’s not decisive, but i’m not sure sports can have such a decisive leaders these days. baseball is still very popular, he’s gotten a number of new stadiums built, the relationship with the union is the best i can remember, wild card, interleague play (which has grown on me), and WBC (the effects of which are still being debated, but certainly has raised the international profile). yes, there is the PED thing, but would it have been different under someone else? probably not unless you wanted a walk out.
by Capt Science on Feb 8, 2010 12:09 PM CST up reply actions
I think competitive balance and steroids are the issues that will drag his reputation down.
And the new stadiums you mentioned are actually becoming part of the first problem. Selig beat the drum loudly for new stadiums in a lot of places, citing them as the only way some teams could remain competitive. Several of the cities that spent a lot of money on those stadiums (Cleveland, Pittsburgh and San Diego, for example) have nice new stadiums and still aren’t competitive.
As for steroids, I think that will be his lasting legacy. Say what you will about what he should or shouldn’t have done, but steroids are the single biggest story in baseball and have been for several years. That’s a mess that could have been avoided if something had been done about them a decade or more ago, when he seemingly was already well aware of a problem.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
in two minds about this
while i don’t disagree that steroids will mar his legacy, i just don’t think that anyone else would’ve had a much better go at it. the union was massively powerful at the start of this. some people believe that sosa/ mcguire helped re-ignite interest in the sport as well.
i dunno… i just think his ability to work the politics and build consensus is probably going to be the template for any commissioner these days. and there was no building it on that issue at that time. anyone else would have been marred equally. it’s not as if the other leagues have better policies (or even baseball history, for that matter).

You raise good points
I’m not quite following this statement:
Several of the cities that spent a lot of money on those stadiums (Cleveland, Pittsburgh and San Diego, for example) have nice new stadiums and still aren’t competitive.
Certainly not many teams are able to have long term success like NYY or BOS but I think the stadiums have helped teams to an extent.
Cleveland hadn’t made the playoffs in 40 years then set all kinds of sellout/attendance records when Jacobs Field was built and have been pretty good since.
San Diego has gone to the playoffs twice in the 6 years after Petco was built — and just missed out on a 3rd appearance losing in the playoff against COL in 2007.

I Have to Wonder
If Selig didn’t bring baseball to MKE, would somebody else have done it? Would we have actually been better off with Selig not bringing a team here, and having a better owner do it instead?
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I think if he didn't bring the Pilots to Milwaukee in 1970
he probably would’ve tried again and again to get an expansion team.

who would've been that other owner?
selig was active in trying to keep the braves and then assembled some of the rich folk in the city to be partial investors in the team. this group then paid big bucks at the time to get the pilots – which was their first opportunity. to give you some context, nine innings said the same amount was paid about a decade later to buy the mets – which is in a better market, btw.
if there was another owner interested in bringing baseball to milwaukee, where were they when the team was sold? and if they existed but were less attractive than Mark A., then why would they have ever won an expansion team? in this alternate world, i think it’s more likely Paul Allen gets a team in portland.

I will forever remember Selig for his All-Star stubbornness
In spite of a continued ratings drop after he “made it count”, he has continued to keep the stupid WS home field advantage rule. It doesn’t make the game any better, toys with the outcome of the world series, and has shown no positive impact on viewership.

All of the precious metals have gone up in price
Concrete? Wood? Both would allow people to carve their greetings into it.
Like everyone else, I’m glad he brought the Brewers to Milwaukee, but agree the single best management decision he made was to sell the team to Mark A.
