Game Thread #-27: Brewers (3-3) at Padres (1-3)

After vanquishing our Cactus League money-grubbing rivals from the North Side yesterday, today the Brewers head to Peoria with a chance to go over .500 for the first time this spring.

Join us at 2 as Yovani Gallardo makes his second appearance of the spring, facing off against half the Padres. The bad news is, it's likely the good not altogether terrible half, as this is the home portion of a split squad day for the Friars.

After the jump: pitching match-ups, lineups, and, if you're good children, maybe a couple game notes.

Star-divide

Gallardo was solid in his spring training debut against the A's, putting up two scoreless innings while striking out two.  If yesterday's game was a sign of things to come, YoGa should probably go three innings today.  According to the Club, Scott Schoeneweis, Todd Coffey, John Axford, and Zach Braddock (or, as Cory Provus is fond of calling him, Zach Bradford) will also get some work.

In case you missed the lineup for the Crew, it goes like this:

Escobar SS
Cain CF
Braun LF
McGehee 3B
Zaun C
Hart RF
Wilson 1B
Iribarren 2B
Gallardo P

Among those not making the trip to Peoria: Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, Jim Edmonds, Jody Gerut, Craig Counsell, and Jon Lucroy.

For the Fathers, it's former Cub Sean Gallagher on the bump.  In his only action of the spring, Gallagher blanked the Mariners for two innings.  Righty Mat Latos, lefty Cory Luebke, and righty Mike Adams are also slated to take the ball.

Enjoy the game!

I can't believe we traded him for such a crappy player.

I have a question about that.

Is it OK if, instead of posting it directly to the comments, someone says that they have a way of viewing/listening to it and will tell others if they email this someone? I’m not too hot at finding these things, but if I ever find myself in need of some way to watch, is it OK if I ask people to email me a solution if they know one?

I don't know how I feel about that

The reason I don’t allow it is personal responsibility…if I see it and don’t make an effort to stop it, I’m technically a party to it. So if I see you asking someone to help you violate the law, I’m not sure that’s different.

I wonder if people who wrote the country farm and fleet jingle also wrote the breakbush song.

I'm not sure why this is such a bad thing

Baseball is one of the truly global sports so shouldn’t mlb be trying to bring the best talent from around the world here to America

by pjpaulus on Mar 10, 2010 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks.

Idiotic quote to say the least.

As an example, let’s say that Vlad has a kid who ends up playing MLB down the road. In Hunter’s eyes, is he “black”?

Last time I checked, there were minimum salaries in MLB, so no one would be playing for a “bag of chips”. I guess Hunter never heard of arbitration either. If he’s referring to minor leaguers, I don’ t know any that are making $5M.

by sjlee on Mar 10, 2010 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, it's just simply idiotic to think that mlb is sending scouts to Latin America

because the players look black…

It’s pretty freaking racist, actually.

Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".

by tcyoung on Mar 10, 2010 4:31 PM CST up reply actions

Definitely racist

I don’t understand the issue. So there are fewer “blacks” in baseball now (according to Hunter’s definition)… so what? Is it that important that the sport is made up of a specific percentage of a specific minority? Are there examples of “black” prospects that are being ignored? I’m thinking that regardless of their nationality, MLB organizations would recruit anyone with talent.

Anyone ever consider that “black” athletes are going towards other sports like the basketball or football? Or how about instead of professional sports being the default occupation for any “black” athlete that they are working in non-sports related areas?

Besides, is there really any proof that Latin American players get paid less than their “black” counterparts? If a player has talent, teams will pay… regardless of nationality.

by sjlee on Mar 10, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Escobar was signed for $30K as a 16 YO

What kind of signing bonus would it take a similarly talented 18 YO SS to sign thru the draft? He would get more than that simply to cover college. So yeah, they are getting a bag of chips in comparison.

It’s a pretty old story that for the most part Caribbean and South American players are severely under paid in signing bonuses compared to US/Canadian players who are drafted, and that’s not even getting into the National’s demanding a kickback of any signing bonus money.

When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved

by Getting Yosted on Mar 10, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

True...

Talented baseball players from Latin American countries are probably willing to take less because…

1. It’s still more than they would make playing in their home country.
2. it’s also a ticket to go to the US.

I still think a similarly talented American 18 yo SS would still get drafted (and likely paid more), but that doesn’t really backup Hunter’s claim.

by sjlee on Mar 10, 2010 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

On the contrary, they don't have to go through the draft process.

See Chapman, as Ozzie pointed out.

Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".

by tcyoung on Mar 10, 2010 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

It's tough to argue with Ozzie logic

But how about we go with for 95% of players, the only real money they will get out of baseball is their first contract. Of that 95%, how many are getting Chapman money and how many are getting Escobar money? Bag of chips is about right.

If you can sign 10 Latin players for the price of every one American it eventually has a crowding out effect, with both black and white Americans being hurt.

When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved

by Getting Yosted on Mar 10, 2010 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

I'm calling BS here.

Lots and lots of latino players are signed to cheap deals to be a part of Dominican acdemies and whatnot, but the vast majority of them never leave the island. Even very good and well funded academies in the DR graduate a handful of players at best.

So, those handfuls of players who were recruited from a latino talent mill and paid a “bag of chips” take up a few spots in the minors, but players like Hunter should be happy for that – those cheap sources of talent leave more money on the market for players like him.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

he did say that the african american mlb players have a conspiracy theory

by pjpaulus on Mar 10, 2010 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

To be fair to Hunter

“I’m [ticked] right now. I’m upset. And people wonder why athletes don’t talk to the media that much,” Hunter said. “It’s stupid. That wasn’t even the main topic of the discussion. That was like a piece of the conversation, Point-five percent of 100 percent. The main topic was that there are no scholarships for baseball. … It wasn’t a negative story.”

by ecocd on Mar 10, 2010 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

I have a hard time how this quote can be taken out of context...

“As African-American players, we have a theory that baseball can go get an imitator and pass them off as us,” Hunter says. "It’s like they had to get some kind of dark faces, so they go to the Dominican or Venezuela because you can get them cheaper. It’s like, ‘Why should I get this kid from the South Side of Chicago and have Scott Boras represent him and pay him $5 million when you can get a Dominican guy for a bag of chips?’

“I’m telling you, it’s sad.”

by pjpaulus on Mar 10, 2010 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 10, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not saying it was taken out of context

I’m saying that Hunter’s point is that the article and everyone since has focused on one part of a longer discussion. He’s right that athletes don’t talk to the media for just such a reason.

I’m not defending what he said, but if the media wants continues access to players there’s some responsibility for protecting them from themselves, isn’t there?

by ecocd on Mar 10, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

Hunter probably realizes that what he said is pretty dumb but by putting that quote into the article, the author changes the focus from the need to better scout and give US players better chances to a discussion about purely race

by pjpaulus on Mar 10, 2010 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Besides, something like that will sell way more papers and get more attention than simply a discussion on the need for better scouting in the US (if that was indeed his point).

BTW, I would think that most reporters who do that sort of thing get “blacklisted” by players.

by sjlee on Mar 10, 2010 5:01 PM CST up reply actions

I hate the whole "we need more black people in baseball" thing

I mean we need the best players, I don’t care what color or shape they are. The whole thing is foolish— black people represent about 8% of major leaguers, and 12% of the total US Population. Maybe the better focus would be getting more white people into basketball and football? Obviously that’s not a serious suggestion, but it’’s a confusing concept to me.
