Game Thread #-24: Cubs (4-3) at Brewers (3-6)

So, here we are again with an ever-so-must-win spring training matchup against our rivals from the North Side/Mesa.

Join us after the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on today's game!

Star-divide

Jeff Samardzija (1-3, 7.53 ERA in 2009) might be the best-known fringe starting pitching candidate in all of baseball this season, based largely on his former career as a football player at Notre Dame. As a Cub, he wasn't much to write home about last season, posting a 7.53 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 1.8 home runs per nine over 34.2 innings. He also made 18 appearances for AAA Iowa, posting a 4.35 ERA.

Doug Davis (9-14, 4.12 ERA in 2009), meanwhile, is making his first Cactus League start of 2009 after rains washed away his scheduled appearance on Sunday. Davis has been very good against the Cubs over the course of his career, posting a 3.20 ERA in 16 starts. Today he'll make his first game appearance in a Brewer uniform since September 28, 2006.

Via Tyler Barnes and Carrie Muskat, here are today's lineups:

Cubs Brewers
Starlin Castro SS Rickie Weeks 2B
James Adduci RF Alcides Escobar SS
Derrek Lee 1B Ryan Braun LF
Aramis Ramirez 3B Prince Fielder 1B
Tyler Colvin CF Jim Edmonds CF
Alfonso Soriano LF Gregg Zaun C
Bobby Scales 2B Jody Gerut RF
Koyie Hill C Adam Heether 3B
Jeff Samardzija P Doug Davis P

Enjoy the game!

Off to a flying start

Weeks leads off with a double…Cubs miss a grounder up the middle, Weeks scores, Escobar on base….Braun goes down swinging…Fielder lines out….Jim Edmonds hits a home run to center, 3-0….Gregg Zaun hits one out of the park to right, now 4-0….and all called by Our Bob Uecker! Spring is here!

Sounds like I missed a great first inning

wasted my time watching a pathetic effort by the Badgers against Illinois. Hoping for a better second half in that “meaningful” game.

Agreed, down 11 now, haven't scored in the second half

Well atleast the Badgers

made it look close, that was just awful, not a good way to go into the Tourney at all

The Big Ten Tourney doesn't matter

Who cares? The Badgers obviously didn’t. Why should you? All of the conference tournaments are practically meaningless. Only the Big Dance matters.

by ecocd on Mar 12, 2010 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

I think it only matters to those teams on the bubble.

Winning the conference tournament is an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney.

Gregg Zaun

is my new favorite brewer. I just have a thing for Big White Stiffs. He’s the kind of guy who looks like he could’ve played for the Bucks in the 80’s, and thats ok with me

Awesome

I’m choosing to view that tweet as a compliment.

Willie Mays Hays never got caught stealing, was an integral part of a division winner and was so fast he could score from 2B on a bunt. He could also take 15 foot leads and never get picked off.

And keeps making his case to stay on the roster

What’s the deal with the outfield? Do the Brewers keep Edmonds or Gerut?

by ecocd on Mar 12, 2010 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Or both, I mean?

I don’t remember the bench composition.

by ecocd on Mar 12, 2010 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

They could keep both.

According to my count, they have 22 of the 25 roster spots filled (8 position starters, 12 pitchers and 2 bench players – Counsel and Gerut). One of the last three spots has to be a backup catcher.

by sjlee on Mar 12, 2010 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

It depends

Can one of them start? :-) Either would have to be better than Suppan.

OK that was a cheap shot…and Suppan is anything but cheap…

by PlusorMinusThree on Mar 12, 2010 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

YAY!

Jody Gerut produces! A two-run homer! Who’d’a thunk it?

Why are people so anti-Gerut. I guess I just don't understand it.

He's not a position player

Even we wouldn’t criticize Suppan for his prowess, or lack thereof, at the plate. In fact, he’s probably the best sac bunt pitcher on the roster.

by ecocd on Mar 12, 2010 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

True.

I wasn’t sure if we limited complaining about Brewers (whether they deserved it or not) to only position players.

who does he think he is, Braden Looper

by Take Back Our Bucks on Mar 12, 2010 3:43 PM CST reply actions

truth

how did that guy get 14 wins last year? It speaks volums about the offense, when anyone except Gallardo was pitching last year

Go Beer, I mean Bucks

by Take Back Our Bucks on Mar 12, 2010 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

Run support and lots of bullpen help

Here’s a breakdown of his 14 wins…

Games opponents scored 4 or more runs = 6
Games pitched 7 or more innings = 2 (both were 7 inning outings)
Average innings/win= 6.07

by sjlee on Mar 12, 2010 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

Nah

You need to wait for the posts saying Mateo’s great because he’s got 12 or 13 wins (despite a crazily high ERA) before he’s in the same league. Its kinda like last season Looper was a sportscaster’s idiotmeter…

"I hope your name is Rick"

Looper hasn’t given up even a SINGLE homerun in Spring Training.

by ecocd on Mar 12, 2010 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

but would you say he has a 0 ERA or an infinity ERA?

Zero divided by zero.

We need to solve that using L’Hopital’s rule, right?

L'Hopital's Rule

Wikipedia

In short, when attempting to take the limit of a function “f(x) / g(x)” that evaluates to 0/0, infinity/infinity, or any infinity/0 combination, you can take the derivative of f and g then try to evaluate again.

I know it still would not solve the problem,

but when I hear “zero divided by zero”, it’s the first thing I think of.
