Game Thread #-18: Brewers (8-6) at Royals (6-4)
Fifth place in the Cactus League is on the line today as Chris Narveson takes on Gil Meche.
Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineups and conversation on today's game!
Gil Meche (6-10, 5.09 in 2009) is coming off his worst season in recent memory: his 23 starts and 129 innings were his lowest since 2004, and his 5.09 ERA was his worst since 2005. That's compounded by the fact that he's still owed $24 million over this season and next as part of the 5 year/$55 million deal he signed before the 2007 season. He's pretty hittable (10 H/9 last season), and will walk some batters (4 BB/9 last season as well)
He'll face off against Chris Narveson (2-0, 3.83 in 2009), as he continues to try to make a case to make the team (or someone else's team) out of spring training. Narveson has allowed just one hit in five innings of work this spring, walking two and striking out three. None of his 26 major league appearances have come against the Royals.
Via Tyler Barnes, here's today's Brewer lineup:
Carlos Gomez CF
Alcides Escobar SS
Jody Gerut RF
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
George Kottaras DH
Adam Stern LF
Matt Treanor C
Joe Inglett 2B
Enjoy the game!

Any hope that we can secretly switch Greinke and Suppan?
Or just bum rush the Royals’ dugout and take Greinke as booty?
When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved
i hope there wouldn't be anything secret about it

Back in ct after a week in New Orleans
At least I have baseball…
It didn't lead to anything, so no big deal.
He’s still hitting only .176 during ST and wasn’t able to throw out Stern.
If I ran Miller
The first thing I’d do is go downstairs and get a 12 pack.
The next thing I’d do is call a meeting with the people responsible for Miller Lite’s ad campaigns, and give them said 12 pack as a going away present.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
With that said
I think the High Life campaign is a phenomenal success, so I guess Miller is 1-for-2.

But advertising that a beer costing ~$0.50 per can is more valuable than a hot woman is funny.
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
Right
It’s the difference between like and love…I would love it if Miller scrapped that campaign immediately.

Got to practice it sometime.

Clearly, they need the work.

I'm going to assume they're just trying to practice?
Obviously, they need a whole lot more of it
You never know when you'll need to bring in a pitcher because he fields his position better
It behooves Narveson to react quickly.
Failure is just success rounded down.

He explained a pitching change by saying Greg Aquino fielded his position better

Please tell me Nost
used the word “behooves” as well. Or was it “behooves-y”?

Anyone have a link to the gameday?
I can never figure out how to get to it from the mlb.com site.

I'm not sure why they seem to be hiding it.
So I bookmarked this site: http://www.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/
They're not hiding it...
… everything on their site is linked up, so if they want to count spring training stats, the easiest way to do that is to enter teh game information in Gameday, which is then automatically aggregated and summarized for other places on their sites. They don’t provide users a link to spring training gameday because it’s not fully functional, it doesn’t do pitch count, doesn’t do balls and strikes, and they don’t want to give people who are new to the system the indication that that’s as good as it gets.
Long story short: they use it to make spring training stats easy to calculate, but “hide” it because they don’t want people to assume they have an inferior product, and don’t have the resources (pitchfx, etc) at the spring training parks to fully utilize the program.
Shruggity
annoying ad that floats over the play-by-play.
horray for gameday mini.
Plus, IE doesn’t like opening any of the games because popups are disabled.

Woah
I just realized that I get broadcasts of the spring training games over XM (albeit, only the home feed). D’oh!
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Yeah
A handful of road trips this spring are the only time I’ve missed XM in the year or so I’ve been without it.

Not all ST games.
Out of all the MLB XM stations, only a couple will be playing games (and not always the Brewers). The rest just loop a commercial feed.
Narveson isn't making this any easier.
Kudos to him for that.

I wouldn't say I'm completely sold on him
but he’s slowly making me change my mind
I know it's bad to make decisions on small sample sizes
But right now I want him pitching opening day.

Makes me wonder how bad he has to be
For the Brewers to give Heether a shot to play short every day at Nashville.

Yeah, I don't know.
But it seems like Narveson went as long as they wanted, and none of the other four relievers struggled enough to be pulled early.
