Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

I was reading that nice article about Costas and Uecker and then noticed...

From the article:

"On another note, I've been impressed with Joe Inglett from the start.  He plays a good second base but can fit-in elsewhere.  Looking up his numbers the other day I was surprised to see just how versatile he's been.  Outfield, shortstop, third, etc...  Inglett will be a nice piece off the bench.  If he makes the team, which I believe he will, Inglett provides another left-handed bat joining the likes of Counsell, Gerut, & Edmonds."

====================================================

Say those are the four backups (Inglett, Counsell, Gerut, & Edmonds), and they are all lefties, who is our righty PH?  I'm guessing the b/u catcher?  That's not Kottaras.  Thoughts?

Blah blah blah

Inglett has played 7 games at 3rd in his career, and 3 games at short (a total of 11 innings there). He’s great to have, if you don’t already have Adam Heether!

The thing is

Is that probably something like 5 out of 7 days, one of those lefties on the bench will be starting at some position. In almost every single one of those cases, the player they take over for will be right handed, which will give the Brewers a righty on the bench. The only left handed starter we have is Fielder, and unless (god forbid) he gets hurt, he’ll be playing almost every inning at first. I don’t think an all-lefty bench is anything to really worry about.

hmmm...OK, I just don't see that many starts for those guys...maybe that's why...

…the coaches actually get paid :) So, roguejim, Heether over Inglett, two weeks to find out I guess! Again, as so many of us have pointed out, these are just “Fanposts”, so let’s just get some good feedback! And, go ‘Crew!!! Also, I’m still looking for a “Brew Crew Kazoo” if anyone has one!!! I’ve seriously looked on E-bay and have come up with nothing. However, this has inspired me to look right now!

by Braski on Mar 17, 2010 12:17 AM CDT reply actions

Oh, don't get me wrong

If I weren’t on the Adam Heether Bandwagon™ I’d be very pleased to have Inglett, especially now that we don’t have Catalanotto. Inglett is versatile, hits for a good average, and can get on base.

I just can’t root too hard for him, because he and the Heether are vying for the same spot, and I’d much rather root for the guy we drafted and brought up in our own system.

And was off the hook in the minors last year!!

1998 called

They want there saying back. You can never go off Minor League Stats, nor can you go off spring training stats. Heether is think should get another year in the Minors, if not a few months. Inglett and Edmonds would be great bench players. When you have so many starting Righties, you don’t need em on the bench. I’m guessing it will be a right handed catcher.

Macha will never pinch hit with the backup catcher

so it really doesn’t matter what side of the plate he stands on when batting.

by PagsBrewCrew on Mar 17, 2010 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, you can use minor league stats.

You just have to account for regression as the player goes to a higher level and use stats that can translate between levels. You can’t just take minor league statistics at facevalue, but saying that you should throw out several years of statistics is kind of a dumb thing to say.

that being said,

I can’t speak for RJ, but my Heether excitement started last year when he was tearing it up in the minors. I really wanted to see him get called up because he was playing so well. Obviously, minor league stats don’t always translate to the majors very well, but we want to see him rewarded for performing well. Plus, he can play all over the place.

I'm 99% sure

that Heether becomes a FA if he doesn’t make the club.

With his production and current upside he really should shouldn't he?

From a selfish perspective, I’d like to keep him in the Brewers system, but from a Good Human Being perspective I’d like to think he could find a bench role at the major league level for someone.

by ecocd on Mar 17, 2010 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Not the case

He was just added to the 40-man roster. He has three options remaining. They can send him to AAA.

Failure is just success rounded down.

by TheJay on Mar 17, 2010 10:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Ohhhh

So, the minor league free agency thing isn’t based on being on the pro team, but on being on the 40-man roster?

Hmmm…knowing that he now has options, I guess his chances of making the team really aren’t very good. That stinks. Dude won’t make it out of the minors until he’s in his 30s.

Yes, minor league free agency is related to the 40-man roster

If Heether was to be outrighted off the 40-man roster at some point this year and was not added again, he could become a minor league FA after the season.

Failure is just success rounded down.

by TheJay on Mar 17, 2010 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Being on the 40-man roster makes it easier to get called up

Playing is a different story, but now that Hernan Iribarren’s gone, someone has to fill the role of bench guy for a month.

But yeah, he’s kind of in limbo where a bad year at AAA could doom him.

Failure is just success rounded down.

by TheJay on Mar 17, 2010 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Getting to the majors for just one day is key for a guy like Heether

It lets him hang around much longer, as the minimum minor league salary for a guy with major league experience is $60K. He won’t be retiring to a life of luxury, but it makes it easier to hang on into your mid-30s.

When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved

by Getting Yosted on Mar 17, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

However, I believe that minimum only applies for players on a 40-man roster.

That said, players like Heether tend to be in pretty good demand even if just as organizational soldier types once they reach minor league FA, so that avenue should be open to him regardless.
