Mark Your Calendars: BCB Meetup in Milwaukee on April 16!

Ok folks, we've kicked around the concept of doing this before, and now it's time. Join us on Friday, April 16 at AJ Bombers in Milwaukee for the first ever (is it the first ever? It's my first ever) Brew Crew Ball Meetup!

The Brewers play the Nationals that night (in Washington) at 6:05, so we'll probably start gathering around 5:30 to hang out, watch the game and hopefully meet some of the people we've been talking baseball with for years.

Brew Crew Ball is thrilled to have AJ Bombers (1247 N Water St in Milwaukee) as the venue/host of this event. Proud owners of one of Milwaukee's best burgers, AJ Bombers is a staple of the Milwaukee entertainment and social media scene (follow them on Twitter @ajbombers).

No RSVP is required, but they are appreciated as they help us know how many people to expect. if you know you're coming, you can let us know via Twitter or Facebook.

Thanks, and we hope to see you on the 16th!

Is that place a bar?

Just asking because Id like to know if its a good idea for the wife to bring our baby there and we had dinner as well.

by backtocali on Mar 17, 2010 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Their website doesn't appear to be working

But here’s an article about them on OnMilwaukee.com that has some pictures:

http://www.onmilwaukee.com/dining/articles/ajbomberburger.html

Looks like a typical Water Street bar. Seeing as it’s a Friday evening, it’ll probably be pretty busy. Early on it probably will be fine for the family, but as it gets later, the dinner crowd will probably be replaced with a bar crowd.

by sjlee on Mar 17, 2010 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably not an awful place for the family

But dont want to be near cigarette smoke, whether its with the baby and wife or me alone. Hopefully I can figure out a way to make it for a bit.

Braving crazy Friday commuter traffic from Chicago to Milwaukee is asking a lot for not even going to the game. Would there be cheap parking available at least?

by ecocd on Mar 17, 2010 12:14 PM CDT reply actions

Free street parking after 6 downtown.

If you’re parking at 5:30, I wouldn’t bother feeding the meter, the chances of you getting a ticket in the last half hour are slim to none.

Yeah, I was referring to Illinois drivers on Wisconsin roads.

Didn’t have so much to do with sheriff’s not liking south-of-the-border-plates, as cars with south-of-the-border-plates breaking the laws.

Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".

by tcyoung on Mar 17, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I’m originally from Wausau and my family is still there so I spend my fair share of time in Wisconsin. Despite 4 years of living in Illinois, I still remember how to drive civilly.

I’m convinced now that Wisconsin troopers of every kind don’t look for Illinois plates – it’s just that people with Illinois plates continue to drive like they’re in Illinois.

The average speed on 55 mph highways around here is between 65-80 mph depending upon traffic. In Wisconsin, when I’m going 69 mph in a 65 mph zone, I’m passing 60% of the cars on the road. Do a little math and you’ll realize why Illinois driving habits get FIBS pulled over in Wisconsin all the time.

Parking

Parking in downtown Milwaukee is cheap (most times free, unless there’s something going on… like a Bucks or Admirals game). The problem is actually finding a spot close by. If you’re willing to walk a half mile, then you should have no problems finding free parking.

by sjlee on Mar 17, 2010 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

honestly, if you get there by 5, you shouldn't have a problem finding parking.

After 5, you’ll have to drive around a bit.

Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".

by tcyoung on Mar 17, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh.

It’s at least 2 hours during rush hour traffic which gets me up there at 6 pm at the earliest. :-\ People will have to take pictures or find some way to bring up webcams for people that can’t manage to get there.

At the very least, make sure someone can still post on the game thread!

by ecocd on Mar 17, 2010 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I mean, it's not like it's impossible to find parking. you could pay $5 to park in a lot

Or you could park a few blocks away. But if you get there after 6 on a Friday, you’re not gonna find parking in front.

Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".

by tcyoung on Mar 17, 2010 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

There's a Milwaukee Iron game at the Bradley Center that night

I don’t know how much of a draw those games are, but it will make parking a little tougher.

by sjlee on Mar 17, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Haaaaaaahahahahahahahaha

That was a joke, right?

Yeah, well, sometimes I drink.

by Dikembe Meiztombo on Mar 17, 2010 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really.

I’m not saying that it’ll be impossible to find parking… just tougher to find free curbside parking. There’s isn’t alot around there, so if there is an event at the Bradley Center, there’ll be fewer spots available.

The Iron don’t get big crowds… they average around 4,000 per game, but that’ll still put a dent into street parking that’s available.

by sjlee on Mar 18, 2010 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

oh...

new mustangs? I remember them, for their year…maybe two they played in Milwaukee before the league underwent contraction.

Are the iron in the same league? or are there multiples or a minor leagues or something?

by PagsBrewCrew on Mar 18, 2010 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions

AFL history

The Mustangs were a part of the original Arena Football League (1987-2008) from 1994 to 2001, when the team folded. From 1999-2009, there was also the Arena Football development league (AF2). The original AFL shutdown in 2008 due to financial problems.

The Iron started playing in 2009 in the Arena Football development league (AF2)… yes, they actually still had a development league despite not having the parent league.

A new Arena Football League is starting up this season, which the Iron will be a part of.

I’m no AFL fan, although I did go to a Mustangs/Barnstormers game and saw Kurt Warner play… all of the above is from Wiki.

by sjlee on Mar 19, 2010 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions

True

But I’m guessing if he’s talking about commuter traffic from Chicago to Milwaukee that he’s not going to be there by 5.
