Game Thread #-15: Angels (3-9) at Brewers (10-7)

First, the bad news: The Brewers' seven game winning streak ended last night, and Jeff Suppan is pitching today.

Now, the good news: If you can make it through Suppan's innings today, you'll be rewarded with Trevor Hoffman's first appearance of the spring.

Join us after the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on today's game!

Star-divide

Joel Pineiro (15-12, 3.49 ERA in 2009, 0-0, 9.00 this spring) is making his third appearance of the spring, and his first since allowing four runs on seven hits in three innings against the Cubs on Sunday. He faced the Brewers three times as a member of the Cardinals last season, and posted a 3.43 ERA in 21 innings.

Jeff Suppan (7-12, 5.29 ERA in 2009, 1-0, 7.00 this spring) is making his fourth spring start and his first since allowing four home runs on Sunday. Suppan is the only Brewer to allow multiple home runs this spring (he's allowed five). He's also tied for the team lead in hits allowed (12), and is second in earned runs allowed (7).

Via Tyler Barnes, here's today's Brewer lineup:

Rickie Weeks 2B
Alcides Escobar SS
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
Jim Edmonds CF
Corey Hart RF
George Kottaras C
Jeff Suppan P

Enjoy the game!

Update on the back-up catcher situation

As per McCalvy Salome is going to AAA. I guess this means that LeCroy is either going to be the back-up or he is probably heading to AA so that he can catch regularly.
Also in the notes are that Hawkins has right shoulder stiffness, Escobar is going back to the dentist and that Cain,Loe,Estrada and Braddock join Salome in leaving the big-league camp.

by Saltire on Mar 19, 2010 2:43 PM CDT reply actions

I think this more likely means LuCroy will be starting in AAA...

… if he’s the third or fourth best catcher, they’re probably still going to want to get more of a look for the rest of spring training.

by Mykenk on Mar 19, 2010 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

But why have your 2 best catching prospects only catch/play 3 times a week?

Or will they take it in turns to DH at AAA? (Is there a DH at AAA?)

by Saltire on Mar 19, 2010 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

We had this discussion a week or two ago

DH’ing allows the non-starting catcher to stay in the game. Sharing time in AAA isn’t as difficult as sharing time in the majors. They’re both AAA-level players so they both belong in Nashville.

by ecocd on Mar 19, 2010 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry must of missed the discussion when I was away

I assume the fact that Salome has been cut from camp before LeCroy means that LeCroy is seen as the one that is the closest to the majors, which would be a reversal from last season with Salome in AAA and LeCroy in AA.

by Saltire on Mar 19, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe they'll surprise us and keep Lucroy

But I doubt it.

Didn't mean to criticize

I didn’t mean to imply that you should be following every comment and every thread. Okay, well you should, but it’s understandable that you don’t. ;-)

by ecocd on Mar 19, 2010 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I do occasionally worry about that as a drawback to the site.

For whatever it’s worth, the Mug is frequently 1000+ words daily and draws 50-100 or more comments, and it’s almost always not the only front page content. Keeping up here requires a relatively high commitment, but we’re occasionally rough on those who don’t.

I don’t know what could be done about it without removing what I think is the site’s greatest strength, but I recognize that it can be a challenge to keep pace.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Tags in comments?

I don’t recall seeing it on SBN, but somehow tagging the comment threads might make it easier to point people to debates, anyway. A search on Salome might have gotten us to the thread, anyway.

by ecocd on Mar 19, 2010 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

But would it help?

I’m not sure the average reader would, or should be expected to, search the history of the site before posting a comment on a subject. Certainly, it’d be the thorough thing to do, but I don’t think it’s a reasonable expectation.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Good point

One of my favorite sites is Let Me Google That For You. If people can’t even bother to google obvious questions in general, digging through comment threads is asking a bit much.

What about putting up open threads for extended discussion? Catchers, Starters, Relievers, Infield, Outfield, FireDougMelvin

I would say that as long as people aren’t especially critical of “repeat” conversation, nothing needs to change.

by ecocd on Mar 19, 2010 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

What if

We did a daily summary of topics covered in each day’s comments? Would anyone read that?

I'd read it

but I might ask for my 5 minutes back

by tcyoung on Mar 19, 2010 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

There are times that game threads get up to 300+ comments.

I often listen/watch the game the next day so there is no way I am going to be reading through those, at least not every comment. I might skim through to get peoples thoughts on a particular play or mangerial decision.
I think that alot of people who visit the site once or twice a day will read the front page but will only will read the comments on things that interest them.
Yesterday I saw that the Mug had alot of comments so looked to see what was being discussed only to discovered it mainly about the musical talent or otherwise of U2.

by Saltire on Mar 19, 2010 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe Salome goes to AA...

Obviously things aren’t final, but if they think LuCroy is a better catcher than Salome, I want Salome as the MLB backup over LuCroy.

If my thought is right (which it probably isn’t), the only time they don’t use DH in AAA is if it’s two NL farm teams playing against each other.

…in spring training anyway.

One more 4 gopher ball outing (coupled with Bushie and Narv’s strong spring) may force Doug and Mark to swallow hard and cut the cord.

Just noted the records of the 2 teams

The Angels have only played 12 games to the Brewers 17. Any reason for such a large difference? Do the individual teams work out their own schedules or does MLB get invovled?

I think most teams are playing a fair number of SS games this spring because there’s an odd number of teams, but the Brewers got a ton of them in early.

Actually having looked elsewhere is see the Angels have also had 2 games tied so they have played 14 games not 12.

I believe we scheduled more SS games because of the massive amount of pitchers in camp.

by SgtClueLs on Mar 19, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that Parra's poor showing

Is making it alot easier for the Crew to keep Suppan around. At this rate I think that Bush is going to get the #4 starter’s spot and we won’t see Suppan or Parra until the middle of April.

by Saltire on Mar 19, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually when I think about it

They may want Bush to pitch 3rd so that they can go R/L/R/L for the 1st couple of weeks of season with the starters.

by Saltire on Mar 19, 2010 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

The soonest possible would be March 31

When they have to make the decision on Bush. If Bush, for instance, gets injured in the next 2 starts, Suppan has a spot.

eh...

cut Suppan now. you can always (attempt to) re-sign him if need be. And whatever you sign him at (assuming it’s less than his old contract) you just take that out of his old contract, so it’s not like you’d owe him additional money.
