Angels 9, Brewers 5
W: Joel Pineiro
L: Jeff Suppan
As is typically the case when Jeff Suppan starts, it was a tough day for Brewer pitchers. Suppan allowed nine Angels to bat in the first inning as they scored five runs on five hits, including a home run by Bobby Abreu. He recovered to last two more innings, but finished with a final line of three innings, five runs on six hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
Suppan has now allowed 18 hits and 12 earned runs in 12 innings this spring: No other Brewer has allowed more than 12 and 7, respectively. He's also allowed six home runs - no other Brewer has allowed more than one.
All told, each of the first four pitchers to appear for the Brewers allowed at least one run: Chris Smith allowed a run in two innings of work, Claudio Vargas allowed two runs in one inning, and Trevor Hoffman, making his spring debut, allowed a run on two hits and a walk in his inning. Todd Coffey pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game.
On offense, the Brewers got a two-run home run from George Kottaras, a triple from Carlos Gomez and a double from Luis Cruz. Kottaras and Gomez each finished the game with two hits.
In the early innings of the game Jim Edmonds collided with Joel Pineiro, leaving Pineiro with a bruise above his right eye. Pineiro said he's fine and expects to make his next start.

Spring training doesn't mean anything
/front office rationalization of suppan’s performance.

Rotoworld.com is optimistic!
via the sidebar:
Since pitching two hitless innings in his spring debut, Suppan has given up 12 runs and 18 hits in 10 innings. Unless someone gets hurt or Suppan turns things around in a [hurry], the Brewers may well release him at the end of the spring. That’d leave Dave Bush as the fifth starter and Chris Narveson next in line.
(I don’t necessarily endorse releasing Suppan, but it’s nice to see that it’s gotten to the point that such reasoning is on a site not run by Brewers fans. Are you listening, management?)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I hope they're listening.
If Supan, Bush, Narveson and Parra keep pitching the way they are, I don’t know how the DM is going to explain keeping Suppan over the other three.

Parra is sucking it up
but was one of two “guaranteed” a spot in the roster after last season (above Bush, Nav or soup)

yeahbut
he was still on the list above the RHPs.
I don’t think he was included simply because he was a LHP.

I really wonder who's more reluctant to release Suppan.
Mark A. or Doug Melvin. It’ s Mark’s money, and I’m sure he’s a bit reluctant to just let $12.5 MM go to a player that isn’t on the team. But then again, I’m sure he understands the concept of a sunk cost. Doug’s got pride invested. He probably doesn’t want to see his biggest signing end as a complete failure.
I wonder if the Nationals would be interested in picking him up, and then releasing him in May when they bring up Strasburg, assuming they want to delay his free agency.

Dump Suppan
Suppan was really bad yesterday. The Angels batted the order in the 1st and scored 5. Playing from behind will make it a long long season for the Brew and fans. Suppan sucks. Did all last year and now more of the same. It offends me that the Brewers will have to pay him to get rid of him. Suppan should be embarrassed to accept a check for his performances. Dump him and get it over with.
The Angels were trying to help the front office make a good decision
I just hope Melvin was paying attention.
Knowing my luck, the June 16 game that I’m taking the Braunophile to will have Suppan starting at Angel Stadium….
kids dig the long ball
and might like hearing everyone else cheering
think of it this way: the braunophile may get to enjoy baseball more this way.

Well, he does like the Angels too
And like most kids, he’s happy to cheer for whoever is winning. So if Juan Rivera and Torii Hunter light up Suppan, he’ll probably enjoy it.
