Game Thread #-11: Brewers (11-9) at Indians (12-5)

Despite having won just one of their last five contests, the Brewers remain one of just five Cactus League teams with a record above .500. Today they travel to Goodyear to face one of the others, the Indians

Today's game is live on WTMJ and Gameday Audio. Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on today's game!

Star-divide

Jeremy Sowers (0-0, 9.00 this spring, 6-11, 5.25 last season) is making just his second appearance of the spring for the Indians, after pitching just two innings his last time out against the Reds. He's recovering from a shoulder injury and might start the 2010 season on the DL. His only career appearance against the Brewers was last June, when he was tagged with a loss, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings.

He'll face Dave Bush (0-0, 2.70 this spring, 5-9, 6.38 last season), making just his third Cactus League appearance, and his first since March 13, when he allowed a run on three hits to the White Sox in four innings of work. Bush is probably expected to go around six innings today in one of his last chances to demonstrate his health and effectiveness before roster decisions have to be made for Opening Day.

Via Tyler Barnes, here's today's lineup:

Alcides Escobar SS
Gregg Zaun C
Rickie Weeks 2B
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
Jim Edmonds CF
Corey Hart RF
Jody Gerut LF
George Kottaras DH

Enjoy the game!

Mystery announcement

I guess it isn’t that they’re releasing Edmonds, otherwise it wouldn’t make much sense to have him start today.

Ryan Braun: He loves it.

In that case

I’m guessing they trade Fielder for Roy Halladay, release Suppan, start Edmonds at 1B, and win the World Series.

I don't think there's anything ridiculous about my scenario

but if you insist, McGehee will play 1B and Gamel will start at 3B every 4th day so that Counsell can be the ‘veteran presence’ that Kenneth wants. Or needs.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 23, 2010 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

To be real honest, I like it something like this on opening day

Escobar
Weeks
Braun(prefer Fielder, but we know how they feel about it)
Fielder(see above)
McGehee
Hart
Zaun
Gomez
Pitcher

Weeks’ power and RBI potential isn’t utilized sitting in the 1 spot (granted you only truly ‘lead off’ in the first AB of the game, unless the opposing pitcher is perfect through 3 innings).

Its just qualifying my starting comment

In the same amount of ABs, I believe Edmonds’ numbers will be better than Hart’s. I also believe that in RF, Edmonds will play a better defense than Hart.

So, better.

by Charlie Marlow on Mar 23, 2010 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough

What do you think about durability? Could Edmonds put up 140 and 157 starts as Hart did in 2007-2008? It’s hard to believe his fielding numbers would improve over 2009 with 140 games on his 2010 clock.

by ecocd on Mar 23, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

What do I get when you are wrong?

His numbers are good because he plays almost exclusively with the platoon advantage. In 2008 he had 401 PAs, 52 against LHP. In the last 3 years, Edmonds has put up 479, 631 and 441 OPS against LHP.

If he saw significant playing time against LHP, he would be significantly worse than Hart.

I'd agree

When he’s been healthy, Bush has been pretty good. He was awesome from being called back up in the second half of ‘08 until getting hit last season, then he just wasn’t the same pitcher.

At his best, he’s a good number 3.

Soap Box time

“in typical Dave Bush fashion, he continued to pitch after his injury”.

I think its bull that anyone would put that on Bush. I think that the training staff leaves MUCH to be desired (Gamel’s lat tear; Bush’s triceps, I believe Kapler’s lat as well, etc), and I would question the intelligence of placing the blame on a player, rather than the Brewers’ staff.

Grimace

Which reminds me, be sure to get your shamrock shake, while supplies last, at the Delafield McDonald’s.

Training staff

I’ve always been suspect of the Brewers training staff. The smoking gun is Ben Sheets’ lazy ass. However, if a player says he’s good to go then you have to let him pitch. And Bushie’s velocity was not down nor were his mechanics that drastically different.

Would you accept

“However, if a player says he’s good to go” then it’s very difficult to keep him from pitching.

by ecocd on Mar 23, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd say it's difficult, sure.

but that’s the training staffs job.

So, Corey Hart played in a minor league game and the big league game yesterday, because he wanted more AB's.

But today, they’re pinch running for him in the fifth inning?

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 23, 2010 4:36 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe he's tired out now?

Or maybe he wants to get more ABs… just not all in one game (i.e. more ABs against different pitchers)?

Otherwise… maybe he tried out his goggles during the minor league game?

by sjlee on Mar 23, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Or maybe...

…that is Macha’s super-secret move and had Hart leave early to give him time to clean out his locker.

by Infield Fly Rule on Mar 23, 2010 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I did consider that for a moment.

But I’m guessing if Macha had followed Hart into the clubhouse to tell him, someone would have noticed.

I'm late to the party but

let me say that shamorck shakes rule! I have had probably 6 or 7 since they came back to McD’s. And I don’t ever really eat there. Just go through the driver through to get the shake.

the last time I went to McDonalds

I parked my car in the lot of the buisness next door (the drive through line blocked the entrance to the McD lot), walked over, paid for my burger and mcflurry, and was out within 3 minutes. Drive through takes about 5-10 minutes in line, then a few minutes for them to get the order right (for 2 items the previous time. A goddamned 1/4 pounder + a hamburger!!!!), then wait for the fatass in front of you that ordered 20 things for herself, then pull up, pay. Wait for said fatass again, pull up, retrieve food. 15 minutes minimum wasted. If they had an express drive through lane, then perhaps I’d consider it, but most of the time I find service in the store quicker (because no one else does it).

by PagsBrewCrew on Mar 23, 2010 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I honestly can't recall the last time I was in a McDonalds.

Might have been 2007.

that's Wendy's for me

Jack in the Box – about a year – 1.5 years ago
Carls Jr/Hardess – about 0.5-1
BK – probably in an airport 1 year ago, otherwise 5 years ago
DQ – about 6 months ago
Taco Bell – about 15 years ago:P
McDonalds before my run this/last month – about 2 years.

bush's 4th

yikes….load ’em up to start off with is not all that appealing. Glad to see him work out of it and have a pretty clean 5th (with 1 BB)

by PagsBrewCrew on Mar 23, 2010 4:53 PM CDT reply actions

They also loaded the bases in the third, correct?

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 23, 2010 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

But there were two out when that happened. In the 4th, it was bases loaded, no outs.

by sjlee on Mar 23, 2010 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

So, Bush worked out of two bases loaded situations today and had two 1-2-3 innings.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 23, 2010 4:58 PM CDT reply actions

I didn't count it as 1-2-3

But the first and sixth were both perfect.

6 innings seems like alot for a starter in ST

I thought they only let them go 5… at least it seems that way.

by sjlee on Mar 23, 2010 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I think this is the next step in the stretching out process.

Remember, Bush was one of the first starters to pitch, starting the intrasquad game.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 23, 2010 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I forgot about that

Does this also mean that we should expect to see less substitutions in the lineup? Does the “stretching out” process apply to position players too?

by sjlee on Mar 23, 2010 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Presumably.

That’s why they’re sending down guys like Oeltjen and Salome – to get ABs in minor league camp.
