Game Thread #-33: Brewers (0-0) at Giants (1-0)

Finally, baseball.

Put on your Rally Lobster t-shirt and join us in the Game Thread for today's Cactus League opener, as Jeff Suppan takes on Barry Zito in Scottsdale.

Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, Brewer lineup and conversation on the first Brewer baseball since October!

Star-divide

Jeff Suppan (7-10, 5.29 in 2009) takes the ball in the Cactus League opener needing to prove he can still be a valuable member of the Brewer rotation. He's coming off his first season with less than ten wins, his second with less than 188 innings pitched, and his second with an ERA over 5 in the last eleven years. He'll probably only pitch two innings today, slightly less than the 5.1 innings per start he averaged last season.

Meanwhile, Barry Zito (10-13, 4.03 in 2009) is coming off a nice bounceback season that makes the four remaining seasons on his 7 year/$126 million deal look a little more tolerable. In 33 starts last season, he posted a 100+ ERA+ for the first time since 2007. He's faced the Brewers six times in his career and has not fared well, posting a 6.19 ERA in 32 innings.

Here's today's lineup, as noted in this FanShot:

Weeks 2B
Gomez CF
Hart RF
Fielder 1B
McGehee 3B
Zaun C
Counsell SS
Gerut LF
Suppan P

Also, via klwillis, we have access to today's traveling roster, which shows John Axford, Zach Braddock, Todd Coffey, Tim Dillard, Marco Estrada, A.J. Murray, Cody Scarpetta, Scott Schoeneweis and Chris Smith as the pitchers available out of the bullpen.

Enjoy the game!

First Brewer hit: Casey McGehee

First Brewers run: Gerut

Anyone else with projections?

by Ditz on Mar 4, 2010 1:37 PM CST reply actions

McGehee took over starting for Gamel so I don’t think it will be Gamel with the first hit. Or at least I hope not.

Gerut actually has a .333 oba against Zito with a total of 4 walks against him in 12 at bats.

It's possible that it was an accident

but highly doubtful… particularly on the first pitch. Rumors were coming out of the SF clubhouse that they were going to get Fielder back for that.

I’m surprised that they did it during a ST game, but not necessarily surprised that they did it. I think Fielder realized that it might happen, so he wasn’t exactly surprised by it. I think as along as they don’t throw at his head, he’s fine with taking his lumps. The great thing will be if he hits a HR today… wonder if they’ll do the Shockwave again.

Credibility reasons.

Even though I’ve never really made an effort to hide my real name, I’d get occasionally accused of “hiding behind” a username.

Plus, I’m also writing for SBNation’s MLB page now, and they require real names. I’d been considering changing anyway, but that was the nudge I needed to finally do it.

by Ditz on Mar 4, 2010 2:22 PM CST reply actions

From my understanding,

Weeks walked.
Gomez flew out.
Weeks stole 2nd, tried to get to third on a wild pitch and was tagged out.
Hart singled.
Fielder hit by a pitch.
McGehee struck out to end the inning.

I'm happy

When he was rehabbing in the minors last year, he got shelled. At least he’s facing MLB players and getting the job done.

I figure that there is slim to no chance that he’s going to get cut, so I might as well be happy if it looks like he might actually have a decent season.

Radio in the Madison Area

Has anyone been able to get the game in the Madison area? The usual stations, 1310 and 1070 AM, are carrying their normal shows. Or is gameday audio only outside of wtmj?

Way late to the party

but 1310 and 1070 in Madison didn’t carry much last spring training and I don’t expect them to this year. Not when they could air hours of hate talk radio. (1310, anyway.)
It’s what drove me to finally subscribe to gameday audio last year.

i've got gameday audio, but its the SF feed

I’m a former, not current, mlb.tv subscriber (2 years ago) and ive got an mlb.com account. i just went to mlb.com homepage and clicked on the audio feed, signed in and the SF feed began. then in the pull-down menu I tried to select WTMJ, but it stays on the SF feed.

Im in WA state, if that means anything.

either way, I’m happy to listen to it, for free.
