Where together, we can learn to spell Treanor and Oeltjen, but probably not Schoeneweis.

If so, maybe he’s pissed about losing arbitration.

So it’s not just hitter success, there’s some pitching issues and defensive problems. Not much defensive problems, but the 26 walks seems high.

If Hernan accepts the assignment, I think.

He is out of options, right?

How far will this one fly?

by Rendezvous on Mar 4, 2010 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

He is out of options

But I’m pretty sure he could be outrighted if he clears waivers. And I think he’ll clear waivers at this point.

This would be his first outright, so he doesn’t have right of refusal. That starts with your second outright.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 4, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

Would that would remove him from the 40 man as well?

Or does only a DFA do that?

When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved

by Getting Yosted on Mar 4, 2010 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

We're getting into moderately foggy territory here

TheJay may stop by and correct me at any moment, but here’s my understanding.

The Brewers could DFA him and remove him from the 40 man entirely, but he’d be a minor league free agent after the season unless he was added again before then. He’s been in the minors long enough to be eligible for minor league free agency.

But, they can also DFA him for the purpose of sending him to the minors without removing him from the 40 man – it’s effectively like applying for another option for him. Teams don’t typically claim those guys off waivers.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 4, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Outrighting boots him off the 40-man roster

If he is not added again by the offseason (October 15 is the date for guys who accept second outright assignments, so it’s probably the same for first timers, too), he could be a minor league free agent.

Designating a player for assignment boots him off the 40-man roster in all situations. I’m not sure what you’re thinking of with your last paragraph…maybe option waivers? Even though he had options remaining, Dave Bush had to clear “option waivers” in 2008 because he had been in the majors for more than three years. Option waivers are special because you can pull the player back, but that’s neither here nor there right now.

by TheJay on Mar 4, 2010 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Ah, ok.

Option waivers is what I was thinking of. Is that not an option with Iribarren?

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 4, 2010 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

Not really

Medders pitched 61 games in MLB last season… he’s probably a bit higher quality pitcher than those three will face in Triple-A.

And Suppan

surprised almost everyone here with a solid 2 innings of perfect work.

by sjlee on Mar 4, 2010 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

This might be an interesting poll

I disagree. Zito is clearly making more than he’s worth, but how much more? He was a nearly 200 inning/4.00 ERA guy last year…on the open market today, he’d probably get roughly the nearly $10/per Randy Wolf did. So if that’s true, he’s overpaid by $7-8 million annually.

But if Suppan were cut loose today, I think he’d have a hard time finding a minor league deal. So you can count his full salary as wasted – he’s roughly $12.5 million over his value.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 4, 2010 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Or...

… you could just conclude you don’t want either of them on your roster at all, in which case having Zito around is worse than Suppan (at least financially).

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Mar 4, 2010 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

FanGraphs has Zito at 2.2 WAR last season.

That’s half a win less than Gallardo, and .5 wins better than the second most valuable Brewer pitcher (Hoffman).

He’s overpaid, certainly, but Zito would be a nice asset to have around.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Mar 5, 2010 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

That's a convincing argument if your alternative...

… is the 2009 Brewers pitching staff. But I think the choices are better than that.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Mar 5, 2010 1:16 PM CST up reply actions

I'd guess just about every team has at least a starter worth less than 2.2 WAR

If they don’t, you’re right, they’re going to win 110 games and Zito won’t help them.

If that's true...

… then I suppose I am. Though angry might be too strong a word. I get annoyed fairly frequently, but angry pretty rarely these days. The fact that most of my wordier comments tend to come when I’m annoyed probably makes it seems like I’m constantly angry, so I don’t really blame you for concluding that I’m in that mood at the moment.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Mar 5, 2010 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

Well, that and the fact that you called my emoticon "disingenuous."

All told, though, I think the whole Suppan v. Zito argument is an interesting one, hence my comment above about it making an interesting poll. I’d be curious to hear what people think: Would they rather have Suppan, and completely flush $12.5 million, or spend more money on Zito, but at least get a tangible return from him?
