Game Thread #-32: Brewers (0-1) at Athletics (0-1)
Well, this should be interesting.
At 2:05 today, the Ace of Brewers Present (Yovani Gallardo) takes on the Ace of Brewers Past (Ben Sheets) at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, starting lineup and conversation on today's game!
I'm not sure what I can tell you about Ben Sheets that you don't already know. Sheets has spent his entire major league career (2001-2008) as a Brewer, is the franchise leader in career strikeouts (1206), and is in the top five among Brewers all time in wins (5th, 86), starts (3rd, 221), innings (5th, 1428). He was the Brewers' first round pick in 1999 (tenth overall, one pick after Barry Zito, and two before Brett Myers). As a career Brewer, he's never faced the Brewers. He'll face off against Yovani Gallardo (13-12, 3.73 in 2009). Gallardo's 13 wins last season matched Sheets' career high as a Brewer, and his 204 strikeouts were the fifth most in the NL. He just turned 24 last weekend and has already logged 320 career innings, becoming just the 26th player in the 2000s to pitch that many innings at such a young age.
(With that said, Felix Hernandez pitched 905 innings before his 24th birthday.)
According to today's travel roster, the Brewers only have seven pitchers along on the trip, so we could see multiple inning outings from Tim Dillard, LaTroy Hawkins, A.J. Murray, Mark Rogers, Mitch Stetter or Carlos Villanueva.
Via klwillis, here's today's lineup:
Rickie Weeks, 2B
Carlos Gomez, CF
Ryan Braun, LF
Jim Edmonds, RF
Gregg Zaun, DH
George Kottaras, C
Alcides Escobar, SS
Adam Heether, 3B
Steffan Wilson, 1B
Enjoy the game!

Ahhhhhhhhhh, first post of 2010 season, feels good getting primed for the regular season!
Personally, I think we got hosed on that one! - Harry Doyle
That's because the following topics have already been discussed fully.
Radio coverage is not readily available.
GameDay Audio has it’s share of problems.
GameDay does not update the same way it does during regular season games.

Updates for the game?
Is today’s game just being webcast? Or what would be the easiest way to keep up to date on the game today.

Yes it's just being webcast. Also a box score here

but thats only updated every half inning.

I'm not going to argue today's poor sound quality
But it beats not listening.

I'd imagine Sheeter isn't really throwing much besides fastballs today?
Working on location and all that? Isn’t that typical for a first ST start?
My guess..
Fielder and/or Braun see some curve balls. But it will be mostly fastballs for everyone else.

Haven't heard him make a single play.

It says he fielded the Chavez triple, was wondering if it was a good-hit triple or an old-man-staggering-around-RF-with-a-weakening-arm triple.

If Eric Chavez was able to take three bases
Then you know it wasn’t rifled back in.

I thought it was Gomez that fielded that hit
He slipped over after getting to the ball allowing Chavez to get to 3rd
He's got very quite footsteps.

I know it took a great play to catch this one
But I feel like I’m going to be screaming “Just hit it on the goddamn ground!” during a lot of Gomez ABs this season.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
I'm going to assume the fielder caught it between the infielders and outfielders normal positions
and say “It’s only spring training, as his power develops, he’ll hit it further. Then the Outfielders won’t have to run as far.”
On a related note, has he hit a ball on the ground yet?
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
just in case anyone cares
he took his first pitch from zito, and just now took a pitch before getting that hit
between was all swinging
Maybe he's working on his swing
You know… like when they say pitchers are working on pitches instead of actually trying to get hitters out during ST.
weird

`When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’
`The question is,’ said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.’
`The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master — that’s all.’
Alice was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. `They’ve a temper, some of them — particularly verbs: they’re the proudest — adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs — however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That’s what I say!’

There is a lot of runs scored in the Grapefruit league today
Phillies & Blue Jays 14-7
Rays & Yankees 11-7
Braves & Nationals 11-8
Of course
in the Grapefruit League, the ball would be juiced.

Just trying to get caught up...
Any reason why Sheets left the game early… because he was struggling or because he hit is pitch limit?
Not bad..
Considering it’s the first time in what.. 17 months? It’ll take a bit for him to get up to speed. Plus the As errors didn’t help his box score much.
I mean yeah it doesn't mean anything.
Probably was just throwing two pitches

Brewer steals and A's errors now even at 4-4
Is there a chance that with Weeks,Gomez and Escobar that the Crew lead the league in stolen bases?
Well, when your 4-5-6 is Edmonds, Zaun and Kottaras
There’s really no reason not to run.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
I feel like we talked about this last year though
I know it’s a different team. Macha didn’t like to run last year with Braun and Fielder coming up.
"Cubs suck. I own them" -Doug Davis
Beat me to it.
That said, there will be many game situations when Braun and Fielder won’t be at the plate when there’s speed on the basepaths.
Escobar had 33 singles and 4 walks as a major leaguer in 2009.
So he was on first base 37 times, and attempted six steals. (16%)
So, assuming the same rate, in 600 PAs he’d project for roughly 200 times on base, and at that rate he’d attempt 32 steals.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
If Escobar is healthy all year
I think he could easily end up with 40+ steals especially if he is hitting at the bottom of the line-up.
Trivia
Is this the first professional baseball game to feature both Weeks brothers?
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I'd be surprised if both didn't play in one of the A's/Brewers games last spring.
