Athletics 8, Brewers 7
W: Andrew Bailey (1-0)
L: Tim Dillard (0-1)
S: Craig Breslow (1)
Another day, another middle inning meltdown, another Cactus League setback.
The Brewers got off to a nice start today, plating two earned runs in the first against Ben Sheets, who allowed four hits before running into his pitch limit after 1.2 innings of work. Yovani Gallardo also pitched well, allowing no runs on a hit and a walk in two innings, striking out two.
The Brewers tacked on two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth, running out to a 6-0 lead, but the wheels came off in the sixth. Mitch Stetter retired the first two batters he faced, but he and Tim Dillard combined to allow the next nine batters they faced to reach, as the A's scored seven runs in the inning to run out to an 8-6 lead they never relinquished.
A couple of positive notes to take from the game:
- The Brewers continue to run wild in the Cactus League, stealing four bases today (one each for Lorenzo Cain, Rickie Weeks, Alcides Escobar and Carlos Gomez).
- Mark Rogers pitched two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth in his first Cactus League appearance since 2006.
- Steffan Wilson, who wasn't even in camp a week ago, started at first base and went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Unfortunately, there's also an injury note to report. Trent Oeltjen was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning and has a contusion on his wrist. He's day to day.

Conventional wisdom is pitchers are just working on location in their first start
How much does the SB successes have to do with pitchers not really focusing on holding runners in early spring training games?
When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved

at least he didn't type in
screw everybody.
That would have been a different site all together.
Q: Did you ever scout Corey Hart? What seems to be holding him back from being a good hitter for AVG?
A: The slider away. And that facial hair.

i am very relieved
dillard is not protected on the 40-man anymore.

Yes, he's on the 40-man roster
My post wasn’t really that serious. It was in response to sowingwildoats’ post about Dillard’s outing today. Stetter did as “poorly” as Dillard today.
I think you can make a case that Stetter ran out of gas.
He retired the first two guys he faced – that entire big inning stemmed out of a 2-out, none on situation.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
He's working on a new sidearm/submarine delivery
So, I wouldn’t read too much into it. He wasn’t going to make the club in anyone’s mind I think.

You keep missing all the news, huh?
There was a big article on it, either McCalvy or Haudricourt I think. Basically Dillard himself talked about how he wasn’t really a big leaguer at this point, and that he was willing to try anything to get there.

To me the most encouraging thing about today is Rodger's outing
