Game Thread #-3: Diamondbacks (12-16) at Brewers (14-13-2)
Ladies and gentlemen, it's almost time to say farewell to Maryvale for another year. Join us at 3:05 today as the Brewers try to clinch a winning Cactus League season against the Diamondbacks.
Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup and conversation on today's game!
Randy Wolf (1-0, 1.13 this spring) is making his fifth "A" game start of the spring, and has only allowed a run in one of his previous four. Last time out, he allowed just one hit in six innings against the Rangers.
He'll face off against Ian Kennedy (2-1, 2.79 this spring), making his sixth start. He was effective last time out against the Indians, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. He's struck out eleven opposing batters in his last eleven innings.
As of this writing, I don't have a lineup for today yet - check the comments and it will likely magically appear.
Enjoy the game!

Easiest contest ever
Guess who wrote today’s “Manager’s Briefing” at the JS?
Here’s the first paragraph:
Unless something else comes along that the Brewers feel they can’t pass up, they’re 25-man roster is unofficially set (the club doesn’t have to turn in an official roster until midnight Sunday for their Monday opener).
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Wow
Ignoring the fact he wrote “their” as “they’re”… he’s basically saying nothing newsworthy… or even noteworthy.
Well, Haudricourt's mentioned that fact a few times...
I won’t go so far as to criticize the intended content, I think that’s a pretty commonplace statement in all end of spring training articles.
Shruggity
Well, they do a Manager's Briefing every day, news or no news.
It’s just the completely obvious grammatical error that a high schooler shouldn’t make, much less a professional writer.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Heh...
It wouldn’t be his first mistake of that nature (e.g. their/they’re/there, your/you’re, etc.)… and I’m sure it won’t be his last.
I do realize that type of news is probably the norm towards the end of ST, but I find the way he’s worded it very awkward and confusing.
Something along the lines of…
“With Spring Training coming to an end, the Brewers appear to have their 25-man roster set. Teams have until midnight Sunday to set their official rosters.”
The Rally Lobster?
Jim Edmonds from RF using a telegraph?

It all set now. Sorry for this late.

Moved the office outside again today.

I can't imagine the grass needs mowing yet.
Maybe he’s using his riding mower to thatch or aerate the lawn or even spread fertilizer/weed preventer?
yep.

this time of year i use the lawnmower to take care of the accumulated dog poop issue in the back yard
when it’s nice and dry it just turns into fertilizer

The Pirates lost again today and will finish Grapefruit League play at 7-19. Washington won today to get to 10-18, so the White Sox (9-16) and Rangers (9-17) are the only other teams with a chance to finish the spring with less than 10 wins.
Actually, the White Sox will finish at 9-16, since they’re playing their AAA team today.

rumor has it the roof will be open.

Those night games in April could get pretty chilly
nice to have the roof closed to keep some warmth in.
Do they make sweaters with the Brewers logo?
BTW – I can’t imagine what that first night game for the Twins will be like in that new stadium. Average low for this time of the year is mid-30s.
I'm sure they make Brewer sweaters

Would it look bad if I wore both hoods up?
Or as Braun has showed me… I could wear a hoodie over a Remetee, over a sweater, over a dress shirt.
Remetee ALWAYS goes on the outside.
Otherwise you look ridiculous.

jealous
But I’ll be in there in June for my wedding.
My step-uncle had the great advice that if you play $30 hands of blackjack for 5 hours, they’ll comp your room. Thanks, Tom. I’ll remember that as I put down my entire life savings to play 100 hands of blackjack.
I would love to see you play 5 hrs of blackjack on your wedding night.

Sounds roughly like my work plan.
- Write your vows.
- Show up wearing the clothes you’re supposed to be wearing.
- Don’t look like you’re still drunk or were drunk six hours ago.

I'm not a fan of April Fools jokes
But that would be a pretty phenomenal one…air a few innings of a Brewer broadcast, then reveal that the game was rained out and they’ve been making it up for hours.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
I sort of wish this game was made up
I can’t imagine Wolf is working on anything this late in ST… hopefully it’s just him getting one of his bad outings out of the way.
Huh
So apparently the Brewers have talked to Jermaine Dye within the last week, and discussed Corey Hart with the Nats.
Interesting.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Dye really shouldn't be on an NL team
If they got him cheap and basically used him solely for pinch-hitting, and only emergency starts in the field, I suppose that could be okay, but otherwise I don’t think that move would work out.
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
I think we've had this conversation before, somewhere
But I’m pretty sure the maximum value of a pinch-hitter only type guy is so low that you’d have a very hard time getting a veteran like Dye to take it.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
I'm not saying they'd be able to get him to take it
I’m just saying that’s the only situation I could see it working out. There was something on fangraphs where they had Dye as, if I’m not mistaken, the second-worst fielder in MLB over the last three years. Dude just can’t play the field anymore.
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
He might be passable in RF if he's platooning with Edmonds.
Hart is pretty expensive to be a platoon player. Particularly if they have plans on eventually replacing him with someone in the minors.
That's probably what they were considering him for
I haven’t run any numbers, so this is a gut feeling, but I suppose if you think Hart’s just going to be an absolute bust this year, Dye might be a marginal improvement. I’m skeptical, though.
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
I'm wondering if that's why Edmonds hinted about retirement.

So, let me get this straight
The Brewers want Cain to play in Nashville this season, but he’s opening the season in AA because, with Logan Schafer out, they don’t have anyone to play center?
Is there not an organizational-fodder type guy out there capable of playing a couple of weeks at AA so Cain isn’t stuck a level below where he belongs?
