"Question 10: How often should Jim Edmonds be in the lineup?"
If there was a once every 2 weeks option, I would have voted for that. So I selected 1-2/wk
What's with the dislike of Jim Edmonds?
He’s no great shakes, sure, but it’s not like he’s stealing time from all-stars out there. I’m sure he’s lost steps out in the field, but I don’t think he’s been the horrible liability he’s made out to be either. I think the idea he’s definitely terrible in CF makes it so when he doesn’t do everything just right, it’s a black mark. I said he should play 3-5 times a week because I don’t have a problem with him being the fourth outfielder.
All that said, I do hope Thursday brings crazy wind and a Braun-Edmonds-Hart OF behind Suppan. Oh, the hilarity.
Failure is just success rounded down.
I have no problem with Edmonds playing one of the corner spots when needed, or if the Brewers are playing a tough righty (Lincecum, Carp, Wainwright…). I just don’t really like him in center anymore especially when you have our pitching staff and a guy the Geurt on the bench.

Gerut?
I don’t understand why people like Gerut, he’s very average. I’d put Gomez in CF every day and let him earn his keep with his glove and his feet.
Agreed, but the one day that Gomez gets off per week (or so) I say put Gerut out there.

That's cool
Let him play Sunday games, and make Edmonds platoon with Hart. I see that part of Edmonds’ contract includes incentives for plate appearances, does that mean that they have an obligation to play him if he’s healthy?
Not really
They’re just there as a way to boost his pay if he winds up earning a starting spot or something.
I don’t think the difference between Edmonds and Gerut in CF a couple times a week is big enough to get upset over. If Edmonds is the CF backup, cool. If Gerut is the CF backup, cool.
Failure is just success rounded down.
Curious.
Edmonds only got 2 votes for “He should play everday” and 10 votes for “He should be the starter in CF”.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
starter...but always on the bench
either that or they think hart or braun (or inglett??) should really start in center and neither gomez nor gerut are better options:P

Curious
On how some of the numbers change as the club does better and worse. I’d say the fan base is really down on the club right now and the numbers probably reflects that fact.
How much of this poll is anger, and how much rational?
I agree
But that’s part of the fun of the tracking poll. I’d like to see more recurring questions and the follow-up post show the evolution by week. And then someone can really geek out and show the results of certain questions layered on top of winning percentage and/ or streak (winning or losing). I bet Doug’s approval rating is high when we’re winning (either overall or on a streak).

I've been pretty consistant with the persistant votes
anti-Melvin, neutral-Macha, anti-trade, anti-DD, neutral-Wolf
so basically my name is and has always been Nancy

Really though
How useful is it to ask some of these questions after we find out the result of the decision? If Melvin’s approval rating is high after signing Doug Davis, but then drops after he blows a couple of starts, all that really says is that the fans voting have no better idea of what’s going to happen than Melvin himself did. All you people changing your vote after seeing the results suck.

Yeah, and all those presidential approval ratings polls are wrong.
The approval rating should stay constant, and should always be the same percentage as those who voted for him in the first place. You’re not allowed to change your mind about decisions in hindsight. Ever. You suck!
Obviously approval is going to trend with results, that’s how approval ratings work.
I'm not arguing, I'm just offering a relentlessly contrarian point of view.
I think you're completely missing the point.
Part of the point of having a weekly poll is to watch opinions change, and see the scale on which they do so. Yes, 30% of people changed their mind on Davis, with 15% now being against and 15% being undecided. To me, that’s interesting.
Is it “useful” to get people’s hindsight opinion of moves? Who knows. But it is useful and interesting to be able to take a weekly pulse on the matter.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
"All you people changing your vote after seeing the results suck."
I’m sure when you were banging the Eric Gagne drum, you never thought you’d be wrong.

Here, let me expound
I’ve changed my vote and opinion on Doug Davis three times now. At first, I was against it, for all the reasons anyone would be against Davis (4.4 BB/9, meltdowns, etc). After I thought about it, I didn’t mind the signing because it was only for one year, and he’s off the books for 2011. Then, after further consideration, the Yovani Gallardo signing, and the fact that Manny Parra is Ken Macha’s red-headed step-child, I again dislike the signing as I perceive it to now be something that is keeping Parra (who, in my opinion, is the 2nd best pitcher on the team, talent-wise) from being in the rotation.
So, I guess I ‘suck’. Then again, its just a poll, it doesn’t say ’fill in explanation here. Some people get worked up about the silliest things.

I like the Davis signing if it keeps Suppan out of the rotation
which is what I thought would happen. I forgot our current manager was a sort of a bonehead.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
It doesn't keep Suppan out of the rotation
See: tomorrow’s starter.

Right, that's what he's saying.
He liked the signings, assuming Davis would mean no Suppan, but since there’s Macha, there’s Suppan.
Also, Parra.

Ah yeah, whoops
I’m always grateful you’re here to clear up stuff I misunderstand.

Yeah that is what I meant.
Before Davis was signed I thought our rotation would be Gallardo/Wolf/Bush/Parra/Suppan. Not that I like Suppan better than Narveson but I thought Macha did, does I guess actually. I thought Davis made it so Suppan was without a doubt out of the rotation. I clearly overestimated Macha on this one. Of the 3 options for Suppan, DFA, bullpen as depth, starting rotation, this is by far the worst.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Then we've got big problems, don't we.

I agree with your general point
You can’t just change your opinion and criticize management once you do so. All trades and signings should be evaluated at the time. I’ve used the example of trading Carlos George for Zack Greinke, if Greinke gets hit by a truck on the way to Milwaukee and George becomes an all-star, that doesn’t change that it was an amazing trade.
I think we’re just looking at a general graph of fan happiness throughout the year here. It’s like a presidential approval rating. It tells you certain things, and it doesn’t tell you other things. I would be more concerned if people started criticizing Melvin for signing Davis, but I don’t think that’s really happened yet.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
really?
How did 89% of fans like the signing of Davis, they overpaid for him by a ton. I could have told you that he was gonna have an era of at least 4.50, his whip has been upwards of 1.50 the past 4 years. And Attanasio wonders why he has no money to sign fielder and complains that he might not make money this year. Besides, the rotaion at double A huntsville is stacked 1-5 with cody, rivas, bowman and rogers with anundson once he comes back from the DL. And once jeffress comes back from suspension, that makes 6 guys who are gettin pretty close to the majors, yet everyone says we have no pitching prospects. And people need to quit complainin about Hart, Gindl has been puttin up some gaudy numbers in the minors except for the second half of last year, and he’s dominatin in double A so far this year too, he could have his chance in right sometime next year. If we can resign fielder through 2014 at least, we will have a pretty damn good team by then, lawrie could replace weeks, we got 2 options for a catcher, gindl could take right, and and an up and coming rotation. Like I said last year when the badgers started 49 in football and people thought it would be a down year, They could easily make it to the rose bowl this year, and so far thats lookin to be pretty true.
How far did you guys make it in this post?
I made it to the third line.
I'm not arguing, I'm just offering a relentlessly contrarian point of view.
Hmmm...
I’m not sure how to respond to this.
Well, firstly, I kudos for the Caleb Gindl love. But I wouldn’t exactly say the Huntsville rotation is “stacked.” Rivas has put up some good numbers, but he’s a little old for AA, and Cody is even older. Anundsen suddenly put up great numbers last year in a very pitcher-friendly park. Bowman probably deserves a little more attention than what he’s getting. I’d be excited about Jeffress is he actually had some control of his pitches and wasn’t one doobie away from being banned from baseball. But if Rogers can stay healthy, that’s something to be excited about.
And you can’t sign a bad one year contract (unless its just a ridiculous amount, like the Gagne deal).
My goodness.
