This is getting annoying.
The Brewers lost the game late again. LaTroy Hawkins got the loss, giving up 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th only a day removed from throwing 39 pitches in his last appearance.
Yo Gallardo got the start for the Brewers, and pitched well enough (5Ks), limiting the Nats to 2 runs in 6 innings. Using 108 pitches (4BBs) to get through 6 innings, meant Manny Parra would have to start the 7th. Making his second appearance of the season, Parra struggled, giving up a hit and a HBP, in only 1/3 of an inning, earning him the quick hook. Claudio Vargas came in to relieve Parra and then threw one pitch, inducing an inning double play, getting the Brewers to the 8th inning. Unfortunately, Vargas got misplaced on his way back from the mound, and Hawkins, who doesn't get the slow or quick hook from Ken Macha, gave up 3 runs to hand the Nats a 5-3 win.
The Brewers runs were generated by a Casey McGehee HR (his 4th), and RBIs by Corey Hart and Gregg Zaun.
Josh Willingham hit his 500th career HR against the Brewers in the last 2 season, and newly acquired closer Matt Capps nailed down the save, and is still a tool.
Screw it, tomorrow's another day.

Ken Macha's Bullpen Managment is killing us.
Hawkings shouldn’t have been out there at all tonight. You give a setup guy more than 1 day off after he throws 40 pitches.
So my question is
If they hold onto that lead going into the 9th, does Hoffman pitch? His pitch count got a bit high in that last outing in Chicago…
And as for Parra…It’s not hard to see how he might look rusty, given how little he’s been played so far.
tomorrow's forecast
sunny, with a chance of hawkins in the 8th. bring your tissues, it’ll be a tear-jerker.

why not coffey
why not leave parra in there a little longer
why not send vargas out after throwing just one pitch
flarghhh
No one understands!
Hawkins throws the 8th inning. Always. No matter what. Hawkins. Eighth inning. Get it?
I would rather have Riggleman as a manager I think
“my closer threw a shitload last night, and the brewers bench is all lefties, so let’s see what happens if I use my lefty specialist here at the top of the ninth, worst case is that my closer has to get the same number of outs, best case he only has to get two”
That might be true
But it still makes no sense

Macha even said in the post game presser.
“Hawkins is our 8th inning guy”

Parra
didn’t look very good, and Vargas cleaned up a big mess he made. The other two questions remain abundantly valid.
Subtly brilliant move by Riggleman in the 9th, too. Right on, @warwick5s

Somebody needs to “Tonya Harding” Josh Willingham. He has murdered us the last two years.

Look at the bright side
At least he didn’t hit us with TWO freaking Grand Slams again like last year. My god that was an embarrassment.
I had good tickets for that game, too. Suck.

Depressing set of stats #1
Through 10.1 IP, Hoffman and Hawkins — the team’s closer and eighth-inning guy, theoretically its two best relievers — have allowed 14 ER and 22 baserunners, together accounting for a 12.19 ERA and 2.13 WHIP.
They’re making a combined $11.5 million this year.
Make an offer for Matt Capps if you're in the race late...
…he’ll be tradable 2nd half if we’re out of it because we have Drew Storen coming to close soon.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
Im pretty sure you will be out of it,

I'm not sure Capps is even an upgrade
What they should do is let Zach Braddock come up and start shutting people down.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Depressing set of stats #2
The Brewers have led in the eighth inning or later 7 times this season and have blown that lead 4 times (not counting McGehee’s walkoff; that was a lead even they couldn’t blow).
The Brewers’ opponents have led in the eighth inning or later 6 times this season, and they’ve held onto every single one of those leads.
I'm tempted to vote for Hawkins
as my 3 star player of the game, but then I realized that that would require signing up for a fangraphs account. And also prioritizing sarcasm.
I would be laughing pretty hard at all the people who wanted Yost fired
if I wasn’t so angry at Macha. This is why it doesn’t pay to fire managers. The next guy is just as bad, they just seem better until we get to watch them every day.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Yost should have been fired....

Like what happens if you don't accept your career chip?
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
Lets not all jump off a bridge yet.
Remember last year in May when the Brewers starting rotation lead the league in quality starts and was ridiculously over performing?
Well I think we have a case of a bullpen and starting rotation of ridiculously under performing.
Don’t worry people things will get better.
I disagree
Jump.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
"Underperforming bullpen"
This is also the result of some degree of mis-management. Hawkins isn’t going to say “Don’t put me in tonight, I’m not ready”, but Macha probably shouldn’t have. And there are plenty of other cases where the game thread has been filled with “what is he doing!?!” bullpen questions.
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
That was painful to watch in person
luckily our seats were under an overhang so we didn’t get rained on. And Nationals fans are easy going so there wasn’t much taunting. I am a glutton for punishment so I am going back today. It can’t get worse than your ace losing to an awful team without their 2 best players in the lineup. Right?
That game
didn’t help me feel any better. At least the Bucks are in the playoffs.
