Game Thread #-2: Tigers at Brewers
It's time, finally, for baseball in Wisconsin.
We're down to two games before they start counting, and the first one is at 7:10 tonight as the Brewers host the Tigers in exhibition action.
Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup and conversation on tonight's game!
Doug Davis (1-1, 5.40 this spring, 9-14, 4.12 last season) gets the start tonight. Since the Tigers are an AL and a Grapefruit League team, he hasn't faced them since 2006, when he pitched seven scoreless innings in a no-decision. Davis has allowed a lot of baserunners over the course of his career, and this spring has been no exception: He's allowed 21 hits and eight walks in 16.2 IP, good for a 1.74 WHIP.
For the Tigers, 25 year old Max Scherzer (1-1, 7.15 this spring, 9-11, 4.12 last season) will take the mound. Like Davis, he's had a hard time keeping runners off the bases this spring, allowing 15 hits and five walks in 11.1 IP. He gets more strikeouts than Davis, though: 9.2 per nine innings last season and roughly a strikeout per inning this spring.
I'll be honest - I scheduled this in advance and I'm on a flight to Vegas right now. So I don't have the lineup. If you do, post it in the comments so others can see it.
Enjoy the game!

Is it typical
to have spring training at the actual home ballpark, or is this something new this year? Never noticed it before.
The Brewers have had a couple exhibition games at Miller Park the last few years, I think.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
It's not the home park for Detroit.
But generally yes. I know that the Dodgers/Angels have a freeway series at the end of each spring training, and that’s been going on a while.
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
It's probably more typical for teams in domes or in the south.
Or new stadiums, as the Twins are playing exhibition games in Target Field this year.

I really wish this game was on tv
I’m at home sick otherwise I’d go

How do tickets for these games work?
I’m planning on going with a group tomorrow. I’ve heard there’s a special promotion going on for students too.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
not sure about student promotions
but I’ve heard all tickets are 10 bucks

There are tickets left, but not any in the really nice sections
You can either buy them online and print them or get them at the park before the game.
I haven’t heard of any additional discounts beyond all tickets being $10.
As Per McCalvey the Brewers line-up
Rickie Weeks 2B
Carlos Gomez CF
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
Gregg Zaun C
Corey Hart RF
Alcides Escobar SS
Jody Gerut DH
Yes there will be a DH in this game apart from that it looks close to the opening day line-up
Looks like gameday will actually be working today

I sure hope Hart can stop his tailspin and regain the #5 spot, because McGehee hitting behind Fielder is a little bleh (Braun/Fielder/Dye would look pretty nice too, as long as I close my eyes really tight during the half-innings he has to play defense)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Dye's OPS(.793) was the lowest since 2004 last year
And he had a staggering -24.5 UZR/150 in RF. Hart’s OPS was only .040 points lower last year, he’s 30 years younger, and his UZR/150 was -9.1.
I’m no Corey Hart fan, but I would prefer to not have Dye.

I wasn't necessarily advocating getting rid of Hart (I actually am something of a Hart fan)
Just that it would be a lot nicer to have Dye hitting behind Fielder than McGehee (or Hart, who has only posted an OPS significantly higher than .793 once in his career – his huge 2007 – and who wasn’t the victim of a significantly depressed BABIP last season like Dye was). Hopefully Hart can get back on track in 2010 though.
I wonder if they could just teach Dye/Edmonds to just cover half of RF – I mean, Gomez already gets to balls halfway across RF as it is.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Good points
Just based on salary I think I’d prefer to let JEd get a shot if Corey’s not going to hit this year.

Bleh?
I guess you’re one of the many expecting a regression from McGehee. Personally, I don’t expect quite that big of a slide from last season, so he’ll be fine behind Fielder.
I don’t think he’s going to collapse, like some people do, but I would be more comfortable with him #2 or #6 than as the guy who is frightening opposing pitchers into not pitching around Fielder (then again, I guess Fielder managed alright last season!)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

I don't like McGehee in the #2 spot
but that’s due to how I’d arrange my lineup. I personally don’t like putting a decent power hitter without much speed in the #2 spot. I like having the option of playing small ball and sac bunting the lead-off guy over to setup the RBI hitters.

Might not actually get to Vegas anymore. Stuck in the Milwaukee airport. If any readers are here, first person to stop by gate d41 gets a free handshake!

because frontier airlines sucks
Flight was delayed 3 hours because they didn’t have a crew to fly it. I missed my connection to Vegas, so now I’m spending the night in denver, where it’s cold.
Also, they appear to have lost my luggage. And I’m currently #7 in line at the slowest moving hotel front desk ever. Have to be up in five hours to catch my flight to vegas.
From now on, I will only visit places I can drive to.

Hmmh...
…first I’d have to drive down to Milwaukee…then buy a ticket (you don’t mess with TSA)…then get to the gate before you leave. XD
2009 BCBallers Fantasy Football Champion - Y'all got beat by a girl, you know that?
will be there on 4/22
Hopefully it will be as awesome as seen on TV.
Also! There are seats available for the Brewers series…well, they’re all single seats, and I think there’s less than 100 per game, but they’re available. I’ll be there for the 5/21 Friday game.
I'm already here
The problem for me is getting home—there is OK, I can take the bus, but no bus back.
You’ll have no problem trying to sell the tickets if you can’t make it to Minneapolis, I imagine. The demand is ridiculous. (April day games being mostly sold out? O_o)
Yeah. I don't anticipate having issues selling, they're pretty good seats, plus, who doesn't want to check out the new stadium?
Shruggity
demand is understandable
It just sucks for people like me who make spur-of-the-moment decisions on attending games (or not) depending on who’s pitching. There were only so many Livan Hernandez and Carl Pavano starts I could stand watching in person. With my luck, I’ll be stuck watching an epic Pavano vs. Mitch Talbot faceoff in three weeks.
And it's 90 degrees on my condo.
oven to 450 for 5 hours + will do that. Why isn’t this game on TV or the radio? Gonna have to move a computer to the kitchen.

Also:
I’m thoroughly confused by MLB.com.
I can’t tell whether I want to use Gameday. At-Bat, Gameday Audio? Trying to figure out what I’m paying for.
Shruggity
Well gameday is free. so don't pay for that
At bat is new, an advanced version of gameday that was mlb audio integrated in it.
"Cubs suck. I own them" -Doug Davis
K, so I'm paying for at bat this year...
I’m paying for gameday audio, have been for the last few years, auto-renewing, so I had to figure out how to get to my product.
Shruggity
As far as I can tell,
If you’re an MLB.TV subscriber you now have to pay for audio for games that aren’t televised or are blacked out, whereas audio was free before today, with a video subscription.

Left field bleachers family section
was gone in 2009 already, relocated to club level, out toward right. We sat there one game and had an interesting view of the blue K strikeout counter.
But we can’t C IT GO anymore? Tear.
You've got a couple screws missin' up in your toolbox, if you think that you'll stop this man from hittin' moonshots.
Seriously
That sign had a complete “fly by night operation” vibe.
Under the flag, just left of the batter’s eye, is a Hoffman banner showing his 591 saves, presumably counting up to 600. That looked nice.

As a matter of fact, he did not
I hope he wears them regularly during the season, though

Fair enough
Earlier in ST, however, he did not
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
So how do we feel about Carlos Gomez hitting 2nd?
I know Macha did it a lot during spring training, but it looks like he’s going to do it a lot during the season…personally, I’m against it.
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
this is just my completely uninformed opinion:
alcides should hit leadoff. short track record, but his ML level at bats + winter league + spring training lead me to believe he’ll have a relatively high OBP.
weeks has the OBP to hit lead off, but i think the power he can show will go to waste in terms of run production at the top. move him to the 2 hole.
until gomez can develop some better plate discipline, he should hit 8th or 9th.

The thing that keeps me skeptical about Alcides leading off
Is that his OBP is almost entirely batting average driven, and that’s almost entirely BABIP driven for him. Granted, he certainly seems like he has the skillset for sustaining a high-babip (lots of speed, seems fairly adept at hitting line drives), but I’m going to be skeptical till I seem him do it for a whole season. That said, I would bet on him having a higher OBP than Gomez at the end of the year, and, between the two of them, would rather see him in the two-hole.
Brewers Baseball and other assorted nonsense (mostly the assorted nonsense) at my blog, What's a Tararrel?
the only thing that concerns me with that is alcides hasn't shown much power
at least, none that i recall in the major league level (though he did have a homerun right?)

Escobar has Counsell-like power
I don’t mind Weeks in the lead-off spot and either Gomez or Escobar in the #2 hole.
Once Weeks gets on base, it gives them the option of bunting him over.
I think Gomez/Escobar will probably have a similar OBP this season, but Gomez is probably a more polished baserunner and has a smidge more power at this point, so he makes sense hitting second to me (at least, over Escobar)
Not that it necessarily makes sense, but I imagine Macha’s reasoning might also have to do with taking some pressure off Escobar by letting him start the season at the bottom of the order.
