Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

He bumps Efrain Nieves, who was scheduled to start. Nieves might have been more effective.

also named 5th starter.
Career track record wins out over Spring Training performance.

That logic makes absolutely no sense. His track record sucks

*sob*

April 10 is a home game. Maybe management would be smart to wait until they’re on the road for his first start. There will be as many boos as Soups when the starting lineups are announced in Milwaukee which can’t possibly help his psyche.

In an unrelated note the Chicago Cubs announced an extended BP session, probably next Wednesday.

AHH DAMNIT

why must they hurt me with bad decisions?

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

I saw this quote about Soup

and it ruined my afternoon. Even with a Brewers win included.

Q: Did you ever scout Corey Hart? What seems to be holding him back from being a good hitter for AVG?

A: The slider away. And that facial hair.

Career Track Record?

Why don’t we sign Kip Wells while we’re at it?

by PagsBrewCrew on Apr 7, 2010 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Then again, they haven't seen Suppan before

Brewers have trouble hitting new pitchers. Maybe the Wisconsin opponent will, too. They’ve probably seen Nieves before.

Is there any chance Carlos Silva is pitching that game?

We might set the record for most combined runs in a game, then.

that would be

awesome. Budweiser stock would soar with that pitching matchup.

oh and everyone who said the 12.5 million reason would not tip the scales in Soups favor were wrong :P

Looper numbers were good?

It is absolutely dumbfounding that Macha is rationalizing this decision with the Suppan/Looper numbers comparison. I hope I’m misinterpreting that statement.

by CoreySLC on Apr 7, 2010 11:14 AM CDT reply actions

I like the part about not facing opponent #1 pitchers

That was clearly the problem last year.

Production matters, too, which means as soon as Parra or Narveson give up a run (too late, Chris), Suppan’s spot is safe.

Failure is just success rounded down.

by TheJay on Apr 7, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

out of curiousity

aside from opening day, what “number starter” did he draw with respect to the opponent? I thought they actually skipped one of his turns in the rotation due to an offday after his first couple starts last season, but maybe I’m wrong.

Also, how is ERA influenced by the quality of the opposing pitcher? He had suck ERA (and suck FIP)…that means the batters did well against him.

by PagsBrewCrew on Apr 7, 2010 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Your ERA isn’t dependent on the quality of pitcher that you are facing. Your record is. Either way Jeff Suppan BLOWS!

I am going to the game on the 25th. Last night I began thinking to myself: “Oh crap, that might mean we will be seeing Suppan’s second turn in the rotation”
Immediately I grab a schedule and start counting and then cuss loud enough for the neighbors to hear me. God I hope there is a set back…

by BrewCrewBrian on Apr 8, 2010 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh cool.

So when he gets lit up in class A, I bet the spin will be that he “made some adjustments” and “feels great”. Thus explaining why he’ll be pitching the 10th.

there would only be a 10th inning

if they let Soup pitch the 9th with a 5 run Brewers lead

problem with that

is we would lose every game that went to extras

but then again, how many wins would we be saving by having him NOT start?

When's the next tracking poll, Kyle?

I’m interested to see what kind of impact this decision might have on some of the management-oriented questions

Monday

And it’ll have a “what to do with Suppan” question

Now that's great tasting chicken!

5th starter

We shouldn’t need one until Sunday the 18th at Washington.

Why are we bringing in a 5th guy earlier then that, especially a guy like Suppan?

So who’s leaving the team when Suppan gets back?

by KittenMittons on Apr 7, 2010 4:04 PM CDT reply actions

Villaneuva

Villa’s great, but there’s so much talent in the bullpen that the Brewers can afford to eat a BP slot with an insurance starter for now.

Maybe not Macha's fault
“I don’t think if he was in the bullpen … [the salary] would matter,” said Macha. “He was going to be one of the 12 pitchers.”

So, basically he’s saying that given Melvin not DFAing Suppan, Macha has to put him somewhere on the roster. And starting is the only gig that Suppan knows and he has no control over how the rehab squads use him – anyway at A ball, they typically do split-starts and don’t have the traditional starter, 7th inning guy, setup, closer that MLB does. So…it’s not like Suppan can get any reps at A ball learning how to be a reliever.

So either Macha is starting Suppan because
a) Macha has no idea what do do with him, assuming he’s on the roster
or b) Macha’s getting all passive-aggressive up in Melvin’s face and says “see what kind of mess you’re creating by not releasing the guy?”

They seem to be afraid of their shadow because of the whole Nelson/Duffy thing too – one should learn balance in these things. Sometimes the veteran options are worse than the bench guys.

Had I been planning to go to the T-Rats game Friday,

I would have been legitimately disappointed to find out that Suppan was pitching instead of Nieves.

Me too.

The Timber Rattlers sent out an email today advertising Suppan’s rehab appearance. I told them that’s the kind of thing they should keep a secret.

Now that's great tasting chicken!

Macha on passing over Narveson for the 5th starter spot:

As for passing on Narveson, Macha said, “He had a good spring training and a good September (in ’09). But, how big of a window are we looking at?” (h/t to JSonline).

It’s true that Narveson’s success has come in a relatively short time frame. As opposed to Suppan, who has sucked for the better part of 4 years. Sample size works both ways, Ken.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Start time and audio link

Friday’s game starts 6:35 pm. Their radio affiliate is 1280 AM WNAM.

Their listen live banner is the 5th one. It says WNAM not 1280 AM.

Brewers start at 7:10 pm. Can we use this as an unofficial Game thread for the Rattlers game?
