Game Thread #32: Braves (13-18) at Brewers (15-16)
Atlanta Braves at Milwaukee Brewers, May 10, 2010 7:10 PM CDT
Fresh off a sweep of the Dbacks and a winning road series, the Brewers return home to Miller Park to take on the struggling, Jason Heyward-less Braves. Follow the jump for the usual.
Tommy Hanson (2-2, 2.83 ERA) will be on the mound for the Braves tonight and (small sample size alert!) the Brewers have actually hit him pretty well; he is 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA against them in two starts. You might remember that the Crew rudely greeted Hanson in his first career start by hitting two 3-run homers off him. Only three Brewers have faced Hanson more than five times: Ryan Braun (7 ABs , .429 BA with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs), Craig Counsell (7 ABs, .286 BA), and Prince Fielder (6 AB, .333 BA).
Doug Davis (1-3, 8.13 ERA) pitched well enough in his last outing to earn his first win of the season; holding the Dodgers to three runs in 5.1 innings. Davis' struggles this year might have something to do with bad luck; his BABIP in an abnormally high .452! Only two Braves have faced Davis more than 10 times: Brian McCann (.364 BA in 11 AB) and David Ross (.250 in 12 AB). Overall, Davis is 1-1, with a 3.74 ERA vs. the Braves.
Via Adam McCalvy, here's tonight's lineup:
Rickie Weeks 2B
Joe Inglett RF
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
Jim Edmonds CF
Alcides Escobar SS
George Kottaras C
Doug Davis P
In the bullpen:
Todd Coffey pitched 1 inning (25 pitches) yesterday and 1 inning (13 pitches) Friday
Mitch Stetter pitched .1 inning (3 pitches) yesterday
Carlos Villanueva pitched 1 inning (11 pitches) yesterday and 2 innings (24 pitches) Friday
Jeff Suppan pitched 1 inning (13 pitches) yesterday
Manny Parra pitched 2 innings (21 pitches) Saturday
Claudio Vargas pitches 1 inning (20 pitches) Saturday
Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 inning (12 pitches) Friday

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: RECORD HUMAN BASEBALL OUTS. SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: RECOVER QUAD GUITAR DEVICE AND DESTROY CYBORG ANGELO MICHAEL.
since my son was born
the crew is 5-1 averaging 8.5 runs per game. This is not a coincidence. And for sample si1s, it doesn’t get much smaller than my boy
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
Does he get to watch the game first?

So FSNW puts up a graphic...
… and talks about the success of the Brewers SP last time through the rotation. The graphic also showed that only one of them, Wolf, managed to go 6 innings. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take it over what we saw earlier, but at this pace the effective part of our BP will melt down by late July.

The Braves starting outfield tonight is hitting below .200 on the season
Think they need some offense?
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Did anyone else here BA essentially tweak the FCC at the top of the broadcast?
This isn’t word for word, but he said something like:
“Bobby Cox is the long time manager of the Braves. That’s Cox with an x, for any of our friends in Washington that are watching.”
It’s subtle, but I didn’t know BA worked blue.

That's a reference to the cake Congress presented to Cox with his name misspelled "Cocks"
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Excellent
Congress consists mainly of appendages, so misspelling his name is natural for them. I like the idea of tweaking the FCC better.

I decided on journalism this semester.
When signing up for classes, I was still undecided and figured since a lot of potential majors required math, I should take it. I hate, hate, hate math. So happy to be over with it in three days.

I was a BA...
… and I tried to test out of what meager math requirements UW had for BA’s. When I came up short, I asked to be let into the dummy math class because all I needed was three credits of 100 level math, and it didn’t matter which 100 level class I took. They said no.
Then I asked when the next placement test was. They asked me why I wanted to know that, and I told them I was going to take the test again and throw it if they didn’t let me into the dummy math class. The guy stared at me for a second, went and talked to his supervisor, and then let me register for the dummy math class, and I got Chris Chambers autograph in the second week of the semester.

Yeah.
I was pretty good at math until junior year of high school, then I stopped caring for various reasons and almost flunked out. After high school I spent 7 years working in a factory before deciding getting an education might be a smart move if I didn’t want to inhale flyash for the rest of my life. By the time I got around to fulfilling my math requirement, I hadn’t taken a math class in about 10 years and what meager skills I had once possessed had long since atrophied.
So I decided to shamelessly manipulate the system in order to make my life easier.

Macha seems to think that playing any single outfielder more than two games in a row is a bad idea
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Even with the current win streak
this is why I am still pessimistic. No reason for gerut not to be starting. screw macha
Since Gerut went 0-3, he's benched?
Maybe Macha expected another career performance yesterday…who knows what goes on in that guy’s mind?

I'm not particularly fond of Hart...
… and I’ll admit I did a double take when I saw Inglett in RF, but can you explain to me why I should be outraged by the failure to give Gerut regular playing time? Aside from defensive concerns, I mean (because he certainly appears to be a better defensive option in CF than Edmonds at this point). Offensively, while I know it’s a small sample size, he’s not nearly as productive as the alternatives have been.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 10, 2010 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Good question
Actually I’m not at all outraged, I just like the opportunity to take a shot at the manager. Oh well, it’s his gig, not mine, and he does have more experience at managing big-league ballclubs….
And I agree with you, I won’t miss Hart at all when he’s traded
by PlusorMinusThree on May 10, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions
Not nearly as productive as the alternatives?
Really, you sure? Even with the sporadic no rhyme or reason playing time he does get he has more rbi then edmonds and just as much run production and power as Hart….but with 40 less ab’s. Give him some regular pt and see what happens
"Give him some regular playing time and see what happens."
Fair point, but when the other guys are hitting and you’ve got more players than playing time, why should you look to make time for the guy (cycle aside) who isn’t hitting as well?
But I’ll admit that logic fails once Gomez went down. I’d be playing Gerut in CF most days for his defense and alternating Edmonds and Hart in RF until Gomez made it back if it were me.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 10, 2010 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah I agree, with gomez out
This is a perfect opportunity to see gerut play everyday and make Hart even more expendable. But for some reason you give a utility guy like inglett (whom I really like as a PH) the start against a right handed pitcher. And another 4-5 ab’s that gerut wont see. In addition to the added D he gives you. Just dont understand macha i guess.
Feels like one of those nights where nothing's gonna fall in for the Brewers...

Heyward isn’t playing, Jones isn’t good anymore, McCann can’t see, and Prado just isn’t good

agree on heyward obviously
but braves fans still dig jones, so hitting him would be viewed unfavorably. plus he’s brittle. mccann, as you point out, wouldn’t even try to get out of the wayl and then i disagree on prado. but whatever, i don’t think a beaning is really in order.

sometimes you have to protect your players
For accidentally hitting him in the arm?
Nothing intentional about it. You’re concerned they’ll do it again, and that hitting one of them will deter them from doing so?
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Sorry
I wan’ts talking about tonight, just in general. I don’t think he did it intentionaly. But if someone did hit one of our players intentional, then they have it coming back, to let them and other teams know you can’t do that shit

That was the only ball Hanson threw all night that was up and in, and considering the control he’s had this evening I think he was intentionally trying to brush back Braun. Whether or not he actually meant to hit him is another question, but if Braun is injured I’ll be pretty pissed at Hanson either way.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I can see that, I guess.
But it wasn’t all that up. I don’t doubt that he was trying to stand Braun up, but I don’t think he was trying to hit him. If he’s hurt (and I hope like hell he’s not), it sucks, but stuff happens.
