First time visitor to Miller Park / Milwaukee...
Brew Crew Ball members, lend me your ears...and suggestions -
I'm an AA frequenter and looking to get some help from a sister SB Nation community. Every year a couple friends and I try to venture to a few ballparks we've never been to. Next week we'll find ourselves in Milwaukee for Saturday night's game against the Mets. Being as this is our first time in Brew City, I was hoping you all might be willing to post some suggestions of watering holes, ballpark attractions, city highlights, etc.
Not looking to do anything too touristy, mostly looking for ideas on good food and drink. We've read good things about the tailgating scene, but I'd love to hear what you all have to say. Anything would be appreciated. Sorry for interrupting baseball discussion, and thanks for any help in advance!

Tailgate, for sure.
Stop off at a grocery store somewhere and grab some brats and whatever else tickles your fancy. Then eat more in the stadium (I am partial to the cheesy fries). I don’t know a whole lot about the city, but if you’re there a couple days, I recommend stopping at Kopps for a burger and ice cream as well.

It's custard, not ice cream.
If you’re looking for food inside, stop by one of the cactus league nacho carts. There is one on the first level, around the home plate area.
But definitely find a grill, some brats/hotdogs/burgers/steaks/porkchops and some beer so that you can tailgate before the game.
Milwaukee’s a friendly city. If you’re nice to the Brewers fans, they’ll be nice back, but if you’re acting like a prick, they’ll let you hear it.

might need to point out though that the custard is frozen
and not a strange british pudding/yogurt thing.
It’s essentially a form of icecream, but has eggs in it as well. And it is awesome.

Or you could stop at Leon's for some better custard and a Spanish burger
Its a couple miles SE of the stadium. As for the concession stands, you can’t go wrong with the cheese fires like Noah said, or a Brewer Burger.
My goodness.

Wisconsin's best kept secret
Find some deep-fried cheese curds. It never ceases to amaze me how arguably the best food on the planet ceases to exist five feet across the Wisconsin border. I’m sure you can get some at Miller Park, though I don’t recall how good theirs are. Also, a Miller Park hot dog with stadium sauce. Those are my uniquely-Wisconsin suggestions.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Yes! Cheese curds! One of my favorite foods ever!

glad you linked to your AA
I would have assumed it meant you couldn’t drink. Or you liked minor league baseball.

we only have time to do a brewery tour sunday
and lakefront isn’t open…though i heard that one was awesome. only the sprecher brewery is open and i can’t say i’ve heard of them. any good?

Pretty sure Sprecher only does tours by appointment
Their beer is good if you like craft beers
Yeah, well, sometimes I drink.

You need to make a reservation.
It’s not by appointment, and they’ll usually accommodate you if you just show up.

The sprecher tour
is very short, as it’s a pretty small operation.
Provided they haven’t changed their format
I believe you pay something like $1 for the tour (maybe it’s up to $5 or $10 now), which gives you 4 tickets for a total of 4 cups of beer (10-16 oz?) or all the soda you want.
At least the way they used to run it, if you had a ticket left over, that would get you a free tour and another 4 tickets for the next time you visited.
A seasonal beer of theirs I’m quite fond of is the Pub Brown English Ale. The Black Bavarian is quite popular, but I don’t personally like it much – I think it’s coffee-infused and is a very dark beer. Their most popular is their Amber, which has more bite to it than the typical American beer, but isn’t quite as strong as some imports.
However, it’s highly highly recommended that you try out their sodas – those you can actually buy back in Queens and Manhattan if you like, whereas the beers don’t ship further than Iowa, Illinois and the UP of MI. The key to drinking the ginger ale is slowly – this isn’t watered down like Schwepps. And I’ve been a huge fan of the root beer since I discovered it. If you go to Kopps, a few times a year they have a sprecher-flavored frozen custard which is absolutely awesome. And if they don’t have the flavor, they always have the root beer on tap there.
Sprecher tours are a few times a week – they run about 2 a day on most Fridays through Sundays, but check the schedule…from what I remember it’s kinda strange.

that was unbelievably thorough and informative. thanks!

The soda
I think I found the soda in a small grocery store on Skillman in Woodside a few blocks off the 7 train (and a block from where I was staying at the time). If it was there, I’m sure it’s just about everywhere…although most places might just have the root beer – I think I found that at a Walgreens or DR in Manhattan. I’m certain of a few places to find it in Northern California, but that doesn’t do you any good;)
But yeah…in terms of their entire selection, I put Sprecher (of Milwaukee) and Capital (of Madison) at the top of my list nationally, but I suppose I did most of my drinking while living in Wisconsin, so I guess that explains the bias.

Silver Creek might be open as well,
They do old school open-top fermentation in a very scenic brewery that was an old mill.

Sprecher makes the best beer in SE Wisconsin.
The IPA^2 is terrific and keeps getting better. The tour is quick and informative. You can’t drink during the tour like at Lakefront, but there’s a beer garden at the end with plenty of discarded beer tickets to scavenge.
Also, Steve Garrison.

Where are you staying?
Because, as an avid drinker and NYC transplant, I have found many great places over the years…

awesome!
i’m actually moving to chicago in a couple months. born and raised new york so it should be a bit of a change. we’re staying at the ambassador which is on west wisconsin between north 23rd and 24th. not sure what public transportation or cabs are like, but we’re willing to shell out if need be.

Bah, any building that’s been standing in Wisconsin for longer than five years has seen at least one deranged serial killer on its premises. Beer, cheese, and serial killers are Wisconsin’s chief exports.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
hmmm
didn’t put that together when making the reservations. rooms come with ghosts of murder victims free.
by pricedoutoftheciti on May 20, 2010 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions
That link is a bit off.
He only murdered one of his victims there.
should’ve kept him in a utility roll
My dad met Dahmer a few times.
He used to fix phones in his apartment building. He was a nice guy, apparently.

Ah yes...
The Ambassador. I went to Marquette, which is near there. The neighborhood isn’t really awesome, but you can catch a bus which will get you pretty close to Miller Park (Or you can catch a bus to one of the bars near the stadium and they will shuttle you.) I personally live on the East Side and am biased toward that area. Bay View is good too. It really depends on the type of experience you want. Almost everywhere in MKE has bars. Better restaurants are downtown and on the East Side (I am biased, of course).
Some personal favorites of mine are (food):
1. Cafe Lulu
2. Come Cafe
3. Koppa’s Fulbeli Deli
4. Thai Palace
5. Milwaukee Brat House
6. County Clare
Bars:
1. Yield
2. Highbury
3. Tonic
4. Vintage
5. Sugar Maple.
Have a blast! MKE is fun!
Have my babies, Joe Mauer.
I would check out the Safe House
if you are in town on a Saturday night.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Sunday night!
The bartender/magician only works Sunday-Thursday.

i took some ny friends to a game last year
i live in manhattan (i’m happy to meet up if you wish to discuss further) and had a chance to throw out the first pitch last year. a few of my ny friends came into town, and here’s what we did:
(1) sprecher brewery tour. i love sprechers, even though the tour is anti-climatic. they show you about 3 rooms, and most of the chat is in the first. so it’s almost entirely dependent on the personality of your guide. lakefront seems like the place to go (because you also get bernie’s chalet), but that won’t fit your timeline. also consider miller brewing; i don’t know their timeline.
(2) they wanted to do the harley davidson tour. it was okay. if you like harley or motorcycles, you’ll love it. none of us do, so i’m not sure why they wanted to do this;
(3) dinner at lake park bistro. nice restaurant, good service, a bit expensive, iirc. depending on what you want, there are some tasty places. i went to coerper’s 5 o’clock club a few years ago and it looked like somebody’s basement but was tasty as heck. i think it’s been sold and renamed, so i can’t vouch for that now;
(4) drinks at the bar at the iron horse. some of the folks were staying there, which is a nice boutique hotel in the city (and next to the harley museum). we weren’t trying to make a night of it or anything, but if you are i think the other areas to check out are the cathedral park area, water street, etc… i didn’t live in milwaukee as an adult, so i can’t really comment;
(5) game the next day. we didn’t want to tailgate for a few reasons, so we went to the park early and took in BP/ stretching from the TGIFriday’s in left field. it’s above the bullpen, so we saw some guys warming up (they threw up some balls, too). if you want to tailgate, i think the others can give you lots of tips. if not, there are some bars and restaurants near the stadium on bluemound.
depending on where you’re staying and where you want to go (and whether the hotel has a ballpark shuttle), you’ll probably need a rental car. things aren’t always that close together and you can’t just walk from A to B like in new york. and cabs aren’t reliable. you won’t just spot a cab on the street to hail. i mean, maybe you will, but i wouldn’t bet on it. and if you call a cab, it may not come. i think cabs in milwaukee are also more expensive than you’d expect.
oh, they place the “everybody clap your hands” thing at miller park, which always startles me because it feels like a mets game.
A good portion of the bars on bluemound run shuttles to the game.
If you don’t plan on tailgating, I would recommend taking one of the shuttles.

Ambassador Hotel
Yo Price,
The Ambassador is actually a pretty cool refurbished hotel but the surrounding neighborhood….. ehh…. not so much. I would recommend cabbing it to and from wherever you go. Not sure I would recommend Lake Park Bistro for a guys weekend- a little too froo froo (great food though!)
Steaks:
Coerper’s isn’t far from your hotel, in an equally shabby neighborhood but the steaks are awesome.
Carnivore – downtown.
Mo’s Steakhouse – downtown
The ChopHouse – downtown
Bars: They are everywhere and everyone is really nice. The hot areas are Water Steet, Jefferson & Wells, Third Ward and Walker’s Point, and anywhere around North Ave & Farwell.
ENJOY!!!!
Bluemound Road
Most of the bars on Bluemound Road (walking distance to the park) will give you a feel for Brewer’s fever, and most have shuttle buses. I’m partial to McGinn’s on 58th and Bluemound, nice people…. great pizza place across the street, Barbiere’s. Actually, Milwaukee pizza in general is pretty damn good.
good stuff
yeah pizza actually never came to mind. might check it out now!
