Gamethread #25: Brewers (10-14) at Padres (15-9)
Milwaukee Brewers at San Diego Padres, May 2, 2010 3:05 PM CDT
This afternoon Randy Wolf goes against Jon Garland as the Brewers look for a series split against San Diego.
Follow the jump for everything you're used to.
The last time Randy Wolf (2-1, 3.34) pitched, the Brewers lost at home to the Pirates for the first time in 23 games. That loss wasn't Wolf's fault, though, as he went eight strong innings and gave up just two earned runs before Trevor Hoffman blew the game. Wolf's FIP is almost a run higher than his ERA, at 4.26, which is right at his career average. He has faced three current Padres at least ten times.
| Player | PA | Slash Line |
| Adrian Gonzalez | 18 | .353/.389/.353 |
| David Eckstein | 14 | .167/.231/.167 |
| Scott Hairston | 10 | .200/.200/.400 |
He'll be opposed by Jon Garland (2-2, 2.57) who's ERA is misleading. His FIP is two runs higher at 4.65 and is giving up nearly 5 walks per nine innings with a WHIP of 1.43. He has also faced three Brewers at least ten times.
| Player | PA | Slash Line |
| Gregg Zaun | 28 | .407/.429/.444 |
| Jody Gerut | 23 | .273/.304/.545 |
| Joe Inglett | 11 | .300/.364/.300 |
And the Brewers lineup today:
2B Weeks
SS Counsell
LF Braun
1B Fielder
3B McGehee
CF Gerut
RF Inglett
C Kottaras
LHP Wolf
Craig Counsell is still starting at SS and Joe Inglett gets his first start in the OF since joining the Brewers.
Your bullpen report:
LaTroy Hawkins pitched 1 inning (17 pitches) yesterday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 inning (11 pitches) yesterday.
Carlos Villanueva pitched 1 inning (26 pitches) Friday.
Jeff Suppan pitched 4 innings (65 pitches) Thursday.
Manny Parra pitched 3 innings (49 pitches) Wednesday.
Claudio Vargas pitched 2 innings (32 pitches) Wednesday.
Todd Coffey pitched 1 inning (18 pitches) Wednesday.

Counsell starting every now and then is just fine.
But 6 times in a week is just nuts.

But it's also a permanent repair injury.
I’ve heard it said that once you have surgery to repair it, you can’t injure it again.

If he's not hurt
Then Macha should be dragged into Melvin’s office. There’s no excuse to play CC that often and hurt the development of a prospect in this instance.
Are you channelling Ted Simmons Speed Camp from September 2009?

Well, ok, not me specifically, but people who thought like me.
Of course, it’s not really the same thing, because Gamel sucked most of last year and Escobar doesn’t…

I'm loving the Texas Leaguers pitch f/x tool lately.
Look at Manny Parra’s called strike zone, and tell me he’s not getting jobbed:
9 balls called inside the strike zone, 3 called strikes out of the zone. On the other hand, Mariano Rivera has 8/6:
Conspiracy!

I guess Escobar isn't injured.
BA and Rock saying Macha isn’t playing him because he’s struggling. It’s odd to say, but I wish Macha would apply the Yost approach with young players.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
did rock just say escobar's not swinging the bat well and that's why he's benched?
so, how do you get out of a slump if you’re not allowed to play? especially against a team that isn’t one of the best in the league. just curious…

I know it's really early and Wolf could end up like Looper but I really like Wolf's stuff.
You can just tell the guy has a ton of talent hes got great movement and great variety on the speeds of his pitches. if he can stay healthy I see no reason why he wouldn’t be very successful.
Using gameday as a reference.
It seems a lot faster than I remember it. I see the pitches on gameday almost instantaneously after seeing it on TV. The last couple years when I used it, it seemed like the next batter was up by the time the pitch was shown.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
That's because Wolf's pitches are so slow, they're easy for the stat feeders to log before the next one.

I usually wait until a movie has been out for a while so the theater is pretty empty.
Also, the last Harry Potter movie sucked. The end was nothing like the book, and that really pisses me off. I’m hoping, since they are splitting the last book into two movies, that they will be able to follow the book more exactly.

That Snape comes right up behind Harry, does the “hush” gesture, and Harry actually thinks Snape is going to help after distrusting him always? That’s such a load of garbage. I can’t remember a lot more, mostly because I haven’t seen it since it came out, but the whole end was just wrong.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"

They cut out the big battle at Hogwarts between the Order and the Death Eaters and they completely cut out Dumbledore’s funeral.
My goodness.

YES!
I forgot about this! SO HORRIBLE.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
I mean, seriously.
Dumbledore was one of the most beloved characters, and you don’t even show his funeral?
And the awesome battle that was the whole point of Harry giving them the Feliz Felicis!
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Didn't want two battles in a row
Although the battle at Hogwarts would be until the 8th movie so it wouldn’t have been back to back
Who cares? The battle scenes are awesome?
And I am really really afraid that they are going to horribly screw up that last battle.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
I thought it wa the best one too.
Order of the Phoenix was a big disappointment. Longest book, shortest movie. They left out so much.
My goodness.

Was that the one with Imelda Staunton...
as the really mean female teacher (I think she takes over from Dumbledore)? If so you’re defo right on it being the worst film…
"I hope your name is Rick"
Imelda Staunton was amazing as Umbridge.
She was just perfectly evil.
My goodness.
by BrewHaHeather on May 2, 2010 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Didn't the movie Umbridge differ from the book one?
I thought the one in the book was made out to be really ugly.
No, I actually think they got that pretty spot on.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Yes
She was supposed to look like a toad and be really fat.
I had a high school teacher who would have been perfect to play her. But in looks and in how much of a bitch she is.
My goodness.

I loved the last Half-Blood Prince!
Yeah, the ending didn’t match up with the book, but it was really funny.

"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"

Part 2 comes out July 15th next year.

November?
Not a summer blockbuster? Odd.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Its nice for me
I’ve spent two of the last three All-Star Games outside the movie theater waiting to get in.

It's that busy that for a midnight showing you have to get there that early?
You can’t preorder tickets online?
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
I pre-order my tickets.
But if I showed up 15 minutes before the movie started, I’d be sitting in the front row.
My goodness.

That's true.
I always forget about seating.

Yeah
It’s kinda like when Gryffindor were losing to Slytherin in the Quidditch final by a similar score and then they substituted a new seeker on and scored 4 times to win it 4-3. God, that was a hellofagame…

Y'know, I used to think the extended conversations about Rush were bad.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Yeah I actually can't stand the Harry Potter stuff
at least the Rush conversations were somewhat amusing.

Possibly my understanding of Quidditch
is significantly better than my understanding of baseball. But that’s not saying much…
"I hope your name is Rick"
There's quidditch clubs here at UW-Madison.
I’ve seen them practicing outside my dorm. I’m not quite to that level of fanboy-dom that I would join, though.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Sullivan.
They practice in the grassy areas in lakeshore.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Uggghhhhhghghhhh
I lived in Kronshage last year. Typical Lakeshore kids! My first guess would have been Chadbourne (lol) but I pass by there often.
Really? Where would they do it in Chad?
Witte has an area they could use, I guess.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Girlfriend lives there, so I'm there pretty often.
Mostly, it seems to be the dorm where most asian students stay. It is an excellent location, though. Also, Rhetas has the best Nachos.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Yeah, my (now ex-) girlfriend lives there.
I love the location but I can’t stand a lot of the other Asian students.
They like to stay up late and slam doors on her floor.
And walk on the wrong side of the hall. You are supposed to walk like you’re driving—stay on the right side.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
That's true.
But I bet they wouldn’t drive on the left side of the road in America.

Exactly.
Plus when I lived in Cole, the girls would use the grassy area for suntanning… things really have changed for the worst.
Not always.
Especially in spring, the girls have come out for good. I assume they scare the nerds away.
"Probably won't make a decision until after the decision starts"
Makes sense.
One of the nice perks about living in Cole on the south side. I could just look out the window to see if it was worth heading down to the grassy area.
Yeah, and we used to skip class and get bombed on the terrace
Now, kids play a make-believe game from a movie/book about wizards.
Part of me just died, I think.

Please tell me they just run about on brooms and throw balls to each other while pretending they’re flying…

That's exactly it.
They really do have brooms. And they have hoops, as well. I have no idea how the snitch works.

Doh
Ran to the store and we are now down 2. Make that 3.
That seems insurmountable with the way our offense is hitting. I miss the days of scoring 20 runs.
That homer by S. Hairston was off a pretty bad fastball by Wolf.
That pitch isn’t good enough to come up and in like he wants to. Needs to keep it down.
Not like Braun should have gotten that last HR
but if they do trade Prince I’m all for moving braun to 1B
