Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

I have a feeling both are going to come up again, so if you haven't seen them yet, here's your opportunity to catch up. Follow the link above for video of Ed Rapuano's confrontation with Dave Bush last night, and follow this one for video of Carlos Gomez's three run home run.

The difference between Gomez' shot

and the average Pujols dinger is that Pujols doesn’t even drop his bat right away. Gomez sheds the bat right away because he’s accustomed to sprinting out of the box on a ball in play, Pujols takes his tarred maple friend with him a couple steps. If Gomez hadn’t dropped his bat yet psychologically it wouldn’t seem like he was being a showman because the first couple of steps would be an extension of his swing.

I think Gomez knows exactly what he is doing

….and I thought it was hilarious. His first homerun of the year was probably worse. He is just a cocky SOB, and the only way you can defend him if he is on your team. When Gomes hit the grand slam off of Coffey, he had a little pause and my initial reaction was “WTF! get walking!” When Gomez hit the bomb last night with a reaction 100x worse, I just started laughing at the TV.

I wonder what Macha said

Perhaps a variant of, “I know my guy shouldn’t say anything to you, Ed, and I’m sorry for it.”

by TheJay on May 22, 2010 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps Rapuano realized he was stupid for what he did

and that prompted him to allow Macha to say anything he wanted without repercussion. I’m just trying to see both sides here…

It would have made my season

if Bush would have knocked out that pompous ass as soon as he started aggressively coming at him and dropping F bombs right in his face.

Gomez bat leadoff tonight?

then we could get the pleasantries out of the way early and be done with it. I would imagine that if he gets plunked in the 1st they will warn both benches.

I'm really, really hoping for mandated "Anger Management" for Rapuano

It’s easily the best way to publicly humiliate someone with the thin guise of wanting to “help” the guy.

I would be happy with a 2-game suspension, but I would be giddy for a mandated anger management course.

by ecocd on May 22, 2010 9:25 AM CDT reply actions

The sad thing is

Bush will probably be warned that he’ll be disciplined if he gets into it with an ump, and Rapuano will be patted on the back as doing a good job.

by biedergb on May 22, 2010 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

IMO the pitch was a ball

But, I’ve never seen an umpire act so ridiculous before. I mean, he’s the one who is supposed to keep control in that situation and not be so immature about his own calls that he needs to get in the face of another player. Maybe something else was also on his mind that night and who knows what Bush said prompting him to feel the need to defend himself in a such a manner.

In a way I’m hesitant to completely say Rapuano was such an ass in the situation because I have no idea what Bush said other than to say that I’ve never seen another umpire do that. Also say that in their profession I can only imagine that they’ve (umpires) have heard much worse before. And, unfortunately, they’re in a position where they have to, in a way, take the high road and to be the mature ones in the situation and that, perhaps, he’s in the wrong job position if he can’t act in a certain manner.

I was disappointed with the lack of hookers but the pancakes were delightful

by Michael M on May 22, 2010 10:29 AM CDT reply actions

Here's the problem, though.
Maybe something else was also on his mind that night and who knows what Bush said prompting him to feel the need to defend himself in a such a manner.

If what Bush said was clearly out of line (and it’s possible it was), then Rapuano is supposed to eject him and move on.

Now that's great tasting chicken!

by Kyle Lobner on May 22, 2010 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

That’s not even to mention the fact that there’s no one who has the authority there to throw out an ump, no matter what he says, so it’s obviously an unequal playing ground. That’s to say, if Bush did what Rapuano did he would have been thrown out but he, of course, wasn’t.

That’s why it’s very important, IMO, that some disciplinary action needs to take place towards Rapuano

I was disappointed with the lack of hookers but the pancakes were delightful

by Michael M on May 22, 2010 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

This is why I have such an issue with it

He must have known he was wrong (about the way he acted, not the call) or he would have thrown Bush out of the game. Remember, Rapuano is the same clown who threw out Victorino for reacting to a call in center field. There has to be some repercussion for umps to escalate things.

by PDUBS1216 on May 22, 2010 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

There is

It’s called umping the All-Star game. Seriously though, I wonder if it means anything that he’s the only MLB umpire whose crew chief (Tom Hallion, just made a crew chief this year) has less experience than he does: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/umpires/crews.jsp

Failure is just success rounded down.

by TheJay on May 22, 2010 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions

That's right

I forgot about that one. By comparison last night was pretty tame compared to that Victorino game.

Rapuano was way out of line. I have to agree that if Bush said something that was that bad, you eject him and move on.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

by cooper82 on May 22, 2010 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

See

I don’t necessarily have a problem with what he did to Victorino. Granted, it was probably out of line, but at least he threw him out, which is part of his job. Charging the mound and having to be restrained should never be part of his job.

by cooper82 on May 22, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

That doesn't necessarily matter

Maybe Rapuano told him earlier that one more word would get him thrown out, I don’t know. Maybe he shouldn’t have thrown him out. Nonetheless, ejecting players is a power given to umpires. Having to be restrained by a player is on a whole other level.

Is it my imagination

or does it seem like the Brewers have (intentionally or otherwise) made enemies of several umpires in the last few years? I don’t typically watch non-Brewer games, but have umpires pulled this kind of stuff with players of other teams?

You've got a couple screws missin' up in your toolbox, if you think that you'll stop this man from hittin' moonshots.

A couple years ago Joe Wolf ejected Ted Lilly for throwing at a Braves hitter because he "knew it was going to happen"

Brian Runge was suspended for bumping the Mets manager in 2008. In 2007, Mike Winters was suspended for his role in an argument with Milton Bradley. Then there was some more stuff last year.

Just watched these incidents for the first time after reading about them last night

And though Bush’s pitch was a ball, Rapuano was way out of line. I’m with Kyle – if Bush said something so inappropriate that you’re tempted to come out and get in his face, just kick him out. What a clown.

As for Gomez, I was expecting a lot worse. As nullacct noted, his celebration was approximately equal to the average Pujols celebration. (Obviously, Gomez is not the player Pujols is, so it’s not really analogous – I’m just looking at the celebrations themselves.) Was it really immature and stupid to do that while your team’s down 12? Um, yeah. Is it also really anal and ridiculous to get upset about that while your team is enjoying a 12-run lead? Yup.

by Cheeseandcorn on May 22, 2010 11:21 AM CDT reply actions

I agree with Bill Schroeder on that one.

I have seen a lot worse HR watching. I could reasonably be argued he thought it might go foul. That is until he apologized.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

by cooper82 on May 22, 2010 11:40 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, at least he apologized.

I thought it really was bad, especially considering the game situation. But he sounded really remorseful during the post-game interview, so I’ll give him a pass. At least he said he was sorry, unlike Pujols who publicly scolds other players for watching their homers.

My goodness.

by BrewHaHeather on May 22, 2010 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions

The problem is that Pujols

watches his HR like that a lot. Which really isn’t the problem I guess. The scolding other players for the same crap you pull is what really bugs me.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

by cooper82 on May 22, 2010 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

I really don’t have a problem with watching home runs. The main reason can’t stand Pujols is because he is a hypocrite.

My goodness.

by BrewHaHeather on May 22, 2010 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's be honest

Gomez was being retarded for hot dogging that dinger. I’m sure the emotion of being back in Minnesota plus just coming off the DL stirred him up a bit but that was silly. I don’t see how he won’t get beaned for that.

Bush’s ball 4 was indeed low, but Rapuano did everything but handle that situation correctly. That umpire must have been born and raised in St. Louis because he has some weird ideas of how the game should be run.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 22, 2010 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

The thing about Rapuano

for me is that Bush starts to walk back to the mound. He is walking away and Rapuano follows him. That’s where it goes from being about Bush and switches to the ump.

by Nicole Haase on May 22, 2010 11:47 AM CDT reply actions

playing devil's advocate

i didn’t see that part of the game, so watching a replay doesn’t bring in the emotion that built up to that moment. but you’re not allowed to argue balls and strikes.

perhaps bush was doing so explicitly (they’ll usually let you get away with asking where a pitch was) and rapuano thought he was being a nice guy by saying something like “what? i didn’t hear that.” that would give bush a chance to say “nothing”, but perhaps bush continued to say “that was a ball, you $%^&*.” then rapuano walked towards him and it escalated.

by Capt Science on May 22, 2010 11:51 AM CDT reply actions

Then he should have thrown him out

No one would complain about that.
