The downside of Jody Gerut hitting for the cycle
Congrats Jody, but your accomplishment has a downside.
Comments
I missed it...
What is the point? What is the downside?? It seemed more like a rant about… well I am not sure what it was a rant about except maybe that we (Brewers) don’t manufacture runs like the Cardinals. Yeah – because Pujols lays down so many sacrifice bunts….

wait, yeah...
how is hitting a double, single and/or triple not participating in manufacturing runs? on the single and double especially, if the hit and run had been on with a runner ahead of him, it would have been a manufactured run. Without anyone on, do you want him to swing away, or lay down a bunt?
Just because he had a good offensive day doesn’t mean he can’t play small ball. Also..we won that game by a score similar to 17-3 – why would we need to pad the game with one single run via small ball? I can see intentionally bunting the ball in the air to the catcher to make the game end, but I don’t think that’s your point.
I agree with you that him on the list doesn’t give me any confidence in the cycle as a measure of hitting prowess and that his name on the list is “just another Moeller” that we’ll be glad to get rid of in a few years when the next cycle comes along.

the downside i see
giving him too much play time at someone else’s expense.
case in point: I flat out won one of those high school nerd competitions (ie one of the following: math, computers, chess, debate), even though I was not, on average, the most solid person at that task. The faculty-advisor person then promoted me to “first team” for the rest of the “season”.
That's what I thought this was going to be driving at
Instead, you get a list of Brewers who have hit for the cycle, and how only Robin Yount and Paul Molitor of that list are any good. And then some lame digs at the team for not manufacturing runs. Huh.
"If we want to sign a Type A free agent, we would lose a second-round pick, but we don't have a way to get picks back. Our whole Draft process needs to be redone."

Wow, this post is ridiculous.
My favorite part was this: “Let’s ignore talent for a second, because I don’t care who is the better player.”
I dunno, maybe the Brewers made the Gerut/Gwynn trade because they were able to get a more talented player in exchange for a less talented one by giving the Padres the “son of a franchise legend” markup.
But no, that explanation can’t be possible, because talent doesn’t matter. The only thing that does is old-school scrappiness.
I meant the comment section on that blog
Though it will occasionally happen on BCB…
Get a ife broseph
it was OldVegasy
with the exception that the author read/responded to the comments.

was that self-referential?:P
In any case, are you suggesting that he’s making money on his site in some way and is just trying to lure us there? what’s the “free card giveaway” stuff they do. Is it one of those deals where “you’ve won, now pay us $200 shipping and handling and you get your $40 card”

No, but I'll bet he gets view $$.
I'm not arguing, I'm just offering a relentlessly contrarian point of view.
at least
not enough to offset the domain and hosting costs.

The downside to having an open forum
is that people without talent or any semblance of a valid argument can post whatever they want… But we ignore talent don’t we?

The point. . .
. . . is a stupid one, but it is that the quality of players on the Brewers cycle list went down. Of course, the quality of the players on the list of pitchers with perfect games may have gone down recently, too, but that is equally stupid and irrelevant.
The upside is that the team we got Gerut from still has no cycles in franchise history.
Do the Brewers still give a Harley to guys who hit for the cycle? Or is that only at home games? Anyways, that would be another upside.
Ichiro, on facing Daisuke Matsuzaka for the first time: "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul. I plan to face him with the zeal of a challenger."
The whole 'cycle' stat is meaningless
Very cool, but reliant on a lot of luck, even if you’re quick and slug .650 getting a cycle is pretty rare
Not to take away from what Jody did but I think it’s more of a cool thing for a fan rather than actually meaning anything, and if it will erase Moeller’s name from Brewers trivia for a while all the more power to him
captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee
Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.
Betcha not.
Given that if someone hit 4 triples, it’d be the first time ever…
I'm not arguing, I'm just offering a relentlessly contrarian point of view.

In any case...
anyone else think it odd that the dude doesn’t appear to to have logged back in here to check the status of the comments here on this site about his link?
What would you like me to say?
You obviously do not like my post. I appreciate you taking the time to check it out. I think you guys bring up some valid points that my post was a little sloppy and did not fully deliver on the promise of the tagline. I will be sure to sharpen up before posting here again. If you have any other feedback, I would appreciate it. You can reach me at joe@openingdaycards.com
