Hart
only 12% want to sign him long-term. I was not one of those people, but I still thought that the number would be higher.
Get well soon Ueck
What's Corey worth?
When you go to baseball-reference and look at the bottom of Corey Hart’s page for suggestions of similar players at the same age it lists Kirk Gibson, George Foster, and Felipe Alou.

I could be wrong, but I believe that just looks at raw numbers to compare players
Today’s game has more offense than when those guys played, so that’s something to keep in mind when comparing Hart to them.
Failure is just success rounded down.
So he's not going to hit 52 homers next year
Hit a walk-off HR in the world series and retire to manage the Giants? How dare they lie to me

Could be 42, a walkoff HR in the LCS, and Louisville Bats manager
Failure is just success rounded down.
That is a convincing arguement
I voted for a long term deal. I think that there is a group of people that thinks we are going to pull the wool over the eyes of another GM and get a nice prospect. Other GMs have the same doubts about Hart that we do, and I don’t think we have a better option waiting in the wings. His poor 2009 season might make a long term deal more affordable.
So you propose selling him for 0.70 on the dollar?
-I don’t disagree, but how little is too little?

Hopefully doing more than he did last year
I like Cain as much as the next guy (ok maybe not), but last year he had a craptastic .213/.287/.317 line – in AA. I know he had the injury, but still.
And this year he is batting .363 thanks to a .442 babip with a 10.3 LD%. Adjusted for luck that might be closer to .265/.355/.371. He is walking more and the OBP is ok I guess, but he isn’t going to have the power to hit in a corner spot.
He’s a 24 year old at AA that is probably locked in at CF. I’m not convinced he’ll be better than the 24 year old MLB guy that is currently locked in at CF.
"...he isn’t going to have the power to hit in a corner spot."
Statements like that always confuse me. If the team has guys with better than average power at other positions (2B, C), then isn’t it easier to get away without a power threat in the outfield? Or is the concept that guys with power are always available to play RF so they shouldn’t waste time putting a guy without much power there?
Personally, I think they should trade him if/when there’s a decent offer available. If not, let him walk as a free agent. $5M/year on a so-so RF is a lot.
Failure is just success rounded down.
I think the argument is that
In the corner spots you don’t need a quality defender – quality defenders only save you a marginal number of runs. So, you reserve that spot for someone with a greater potential to generate offense. If you see SLG, OPS or ISO as ways to measure that, you don’t slot in a moderate or even high AVG player there.
But yeah, truly, they should evaluate his WAR in terms of what defense he could see at that position – for instance, you’re not going to get as many opportunities for a defensive play in right field as you do in center – so their current defensive contribution to WAR has to be position adjusted by the ratio of the balls hit to each position (and the types of balls? ie grounders matter less than liners and deep flies). I guess you should give him partial bonus points for his ability to slot in at center when the center fielder needs an offday or is injured. If his MLE WAR at right field is better than anyone else in the system, I think you have to give him the job, even if someone else has higher power numbers.

Another terribly irrelevant Corey Hart statistic
The only every-day players at least Corey’s height with a higher career WAR/g: Adam Dunn, Frank Howard, Darryl Strawberry, and Dave Winfield.
Personally...I would rank as
Trade
Sign for long term
Wait out contract
Dump
but yeah, that depends on the value we can get in the trade as well as the contract he’s interested in.
I voted for the "Keep him for now" option.
I really don’t think we would get much in return, so why not keep him? See what he does next year and then think about a contract.
Damn you Bill Hall! You make me doubt everyone!
My goodness.

were all numbers divided by 243
and not the number of respondents for that question?
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 3, 2010 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, there's a math error in there.
I forgot to close the poll at noon yesterday as I was supposed to, so I went into the spreadsheet and deleted out seven responses that came in after the deadline.
Now I realize that those seven “blank” answers are still being counted in the percentage. They account for the missing 3%.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
eh
i guess next time just leave those responses in. they were valid opinions of people, unless you thought they were double-dips.
