SB Nation Coverage

Randy Wolf couldn't get on track today and struggled through five innings.  He loaded the bases in the second and third innings and allowed one run in both frames.  The run in the second was unearned as a result of Alcides Escobar's eleventh error of the season.  Three more runs scored in the fourth on a Franklin Gutierrez double and Jose Lopez home run.  After Wolf departed, five Brewers relievers combined to keep the Mariners scoreless the rest of the way.

The Brewers offense was silent except for a quirky third inning.  Randy Wolf doubled and Rickie Weeks walked before Corey Hart doubled into left-center.  Weeks scored on the play, knocking the ball away from Mariners catcher Rob Johnson in the process.  Pitcher Doug Fister's throw to third got away from Lopez, allowing Hart to score as well.  Prince Fielder followed the wild play with his fifteen home run of the season and eighth in the month of June.  That was all the offense the Brewers could muster.  Brian Sweeney, pitching in the majors for the first time since 2006, took over for Fister in the fifth and went four scoreless to pick up the win.  Brandon League pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.

Really gonna blame Wolf?

It’s a 50/50 blame split with the offense, in this one.

 Maybe even 50/40/10 Offense/Wolf/Defense.

I would put it

60/30/10

Wolf/Offense/Defense

Four runs against a team averaging 3.2 runs/game should be enough. Especially given the momentum boost from the 4 run inning, Wolf should have been able to hold on. Instead, he shat the bed.

But the offense

doing absolutely nothing against a guy who’s been out of MLB since ’06 is pathetic.

by Mykenk on Jun 26, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

How many times does the offense need to carry the load

without the pitchers shitting the bed? I mean really?

In virtually EVERY offensive category, this offense is either #1, #2 or #3 in the league. But, they’re not going to be able to put 6+ runs on the board every game. It would be great if they did. But they’re not going to. Our starters have, for the most part, learned that they need to limit the bleeding. Everyone else, other than Wolf, has figured out how to do this. Even Narveson, who everyone has relegated to the bullpen when DD returns (which means we’ll have two guys who seemingly can’t limit damage) has learned that one bad inning doesn’t determine the outcome of the game.

My statement made in the other thread stands: Randy Wolf is a mental midget. He can’t get out of his own way.

K, well, that comment is slightly insensitive, but I'll let that stand.

giving up 4 runs while getting squeezed by the umpires is gonna happen. He stranded the bases loaded twice, that’s pretty good, isn’t it? He kept the team in the game, which is all you ask out of a bottom of the rotation starter.

They should be able to put together more than one hit against a guy who hasn’t been good enough to be in the league for 4 years.

We can blame Wolf for “shitting the bed” today, but the offense did the exact same thing. They vastly underperformed against an opposition they should have handled easily. Bad game for the team all around.

Oh well.

if it's insensitive

then I should be flagged in both threads, but I stand by the statement.

Yes, Wolf got out of two bases-loaded situations before losing the game in the 5th.

I'm not saying he pitched well

I’m saying solely blaming him for this loss is stupid, given the entire team (save the bullpen’s) general terribility today.

by Mykenk on Jun 26, 2010 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not.

I get the argument that they should have been able to add runs. If they had, they likely would have won. But the SP shouldn’t be giving up 5 runs to the Mariners, regardless of Escobar’s error. Wolf has pitched better over his last two outings. Today he wasn’t good enough. It would have been nice if the Brewers offense had put up 6 runs instead of 4, but 4 has to be good enough to win when you’re running your #2 pitcher out there against the likes of the Mariners.

Then again, I thought that about The Ax the other day.

Which pitcher would you rather have?

Homeruns given up by month:

Pitcher 1:
Mar/April: 2
May: 9
June: 6
Total: 17

Pitcher 2:
Mar/April: 4
May: 5
June: 9
Total: 18

1 - not an upward trend

lemme guess looper from 2009

or is this a trick question in that we’re looking at only one stat (HRs) and not considering more of the package

I realize that this isn't a concise and complete portrayal of either pitcher

However, it was one of the major reasons why this pitcher caught flak from fans.

Depends

How many are solo shots and how many are with men on? Home runs aren’t in a vacuum.

And the JSOnline confirms what we already new:

There are no ongoing negotiations between the club and Fielder. They’ve got no chance to sign him and it’s just a question of when and how he leaves, and how Melvin tries to extract the most value out of his departure.

In an unrelated matter, if Melvin extends Hart I’m gonna vomit.

If your 1B situation is such that you start a SS there against LHP over two LH 1B

Might as well trade for another lefty 1B.

I've had it with this verkakte flippity-ship!

Going to be cool watching Branyon strike out 3 times and hit a solo shot

when the game is already out of reach

I will never understand the love some people have for this guy, he is supposed to be gods gift but how many teams has he played for over the last 5 or 6 years and never seems to stick?

he elected to be a FA last year

he wasn’t given his walking papers. I think the same was true when he left milwaukee. Sure, the club he was on didn’t bend over backwards to sign him, but he took the highest offer from 30 teams rather than just one offer from one team.
