Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

From Andrew Wagner of OnMilwaukee.com:

The Brewers have released right-hander Jeff Suppan, who was in the final year of a four-year contract.

Suppan 0-2 this season with a 7.84 ERA in 15 appearances. After starting the season on the disabled list, Suppan made two starts before being moved to the bullpen.

Since signing a $42 million contract with the Brewers after the 2006 season, Suppan posted a 29-36 record with a 5.08 ERA.

By releasing Suppan, the team clears space on both the 25 and 40-man roster, which will allow them to replace Todd Coffey, who was placed on the disabled list Sunday with a thumb injury.

EDIT: The JSBlog says the Brewers have purchased the contract of RHP Chris Smith from Nashville.

This

And precisely this. There was zero chance they were going to exercise his option. So if he’s not helping the team now, and he won’t help the team later, then why not use the innings you would have given him to evaluate a guy like Chris Smith, who could be a Brewer for 5-6 more years?

Now that's great tasting chicken!

I saw enough of Smith last year

Now we pay extra money to do so. I don’t hate the move but really see little reason to excited other than the possibility that maybe Melvin realizes that now would be a good time to turn over the roster because we are going nowhere this year.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

I guess but

I don’t tend to get to excited about moves that, at best, make us marginally better or are made to seemingly placate angry fans. Much like Firing Yost.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was

Not right away, but the callup of Smith indicates that it’s being evaluated. Axford is doing fine for now, but he wasn’t Nashville’s closer. Smith was.

Ha

Narron’s signing should have been some sort of tipoff. With Estrada broken and Loe with the Brewers, signing Narron was an indication that neither of them will be back in Nashville soon.

Nows not the time to be nice guy GM

Those seem to get you no where. GM needs to do what’s best for the club.. not individual players. And the club needs a spot, and Zaun is probably a month away. If he has to wait 2 extra weeks.. so be it.

by SgtClueLs on Jun 7, 2010 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed.

I don’t think DM has been too much of a “nice guy GM” recently… just ask Hardy and Suppan.

I figure by the time Zaun is ready to start working out, then head down for a rehab assignment that the 60-days would almost be up (retro to when he first went onto the DL).

Good guy?

Why does everyone think Suppan is a “good guy”. Because he smiled a lot? Because he claimed to have Christian values? I don’t know too many people who truly follow the words of Christ that think they should be paid 40 million dollars to do ANYTHING, and not even completely suck ass at it the way Suppan did (god it feels good to use the past tense).

Based on all I know about him, he is a greedy bastard who didn’t care one bit about his team or its fans. If he did, he would have quit baseball a long time ago and given the Brewers and their fans their money back.

Obviously, I don’t really think that Suppan should have done this, as no professional athlete is that generous or honest. But I also don’t think we should spend one second feeling bad for him, especially since the Brewers through away a handful of games and valuable experience that players with a future could have used, just to gently keep him on the roster for a couple of months.

And we wonder why the Brewers aren’t winning games – that’s obviously not the most important thing on the organization’s agenda. And the worst part is the good players can sense it.

Maybe he'll sit in the seats with them.

But the real question is, Do the troops now have to buy him a ticket?

Probably nothing

The Brewers were footing most of the money for that program with Suppan kicking in a little bit for concessions. More than likely whatever he was donating was counting towards what was in his contract.

Does time start over now?

Like can we just pretend that the first part of the season didnt happen?

by BrewCrewBrian on Jun 7, 2010 3:03 PM CDT reply actions

Screw that

I’d be fine with Hart hitting sub-.200 with only a handful of HRs if the Brewers were in first place.

I think most of us here would

But I dont believe starting over with Soup off the roster is really going to put us in first place

by Jeo on Jun 7, 2010 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

it would

if we were allowed to put all the opponents’ players in the woodchipper first.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 7, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Only the good ones

No need to dull the woodchipper on the likes of the Pirates.

From the AP article:
In recent weeks, he’s been booed simply entering the game from the bullpen and a comment on one message board immediately after the news said “Yes!!!” 48 consecutive times.

48 consecutives “Yes!!”es? WOW~!

S-Day?

Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.

by sjlee on Jun 7, 2010 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Damn

If they’d DFA’d him one day earlier, June 6 could have been my wedding anniversary, Brooks Kieschnick’s birthday AND S-Day. Would’ve made gift buying so much easier.

Now that's great tasting chicken!

by Kyle Lobner on Jun 7, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

S-Day

It takes a little away from S-day as well because June 6th is D-Day

Right

That’s where I got the idea in the first place.

Long overdue

Now that Suppan is FINALLY gone, can fire Macha too? Two possitive things in one day for the Crew would just be alot for me to hand emotionally though.

When's our next off day?

I haven’t checked the schedule and I’m only kind of kidding here…

I think they could have started the dump a couple weeks ago with their last Monday off day, but I understand this happening now (given previous moves). They’ve got a lot of guys coming back from the DL (15 and 60) and people had to move. I have to say that I’m pleased that someone is finally trying to save his job.

Suppan is a great guy with a great heart, just wish his arm was still worth a damn.

I know it’s just wishful thinking, however I hope someone picks him up (so we don’t have to keep paying the tab). The contract will nullify him getting another job.

It’s a good day in Brewerland. Let’s see if the axe falling kicks some of these guys in the ass and the Brewers can try and salvage whatever they can out of the season.

Even if someone picks Suppan up

It’ll only be for the league minimum ($400k)… not really saving the Brewers much money.

I'd just like to mention again that Suppan started the one and only game I've ever been able to attend at Miller Park

2008 interleague game against the Orioles. I was in from Cali for one night only. Between him and Aubrey Huff, a pleasant evening at the ballpark was ruined.

He also ruined at least one of my Cactus League games in 2009 with his presence on the pitching mound.

Any other transaction made?

Smith takes Suppan’s spot, but who takes Coffey’s? I think Gerut is eligible to come off the 15-day DL, but I don’t know if he’s healthy or not.

that requires another 40-man move

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 8, 2010 6:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, they need to get the roster to 25 for today's (Tuesday's) game

I believe you can only play one game with only 24 active players.

Don't mind me

I guess you can play with just 24 active. You can’t stay indefinitely under 24, though.

One thing everyone is forgetting

captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee

Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.

For what its worth

This dude was right on this. Again.

"If we want to sign a Type A free agent, we would lose a second-round pick, but we don't have a way to get picks back. Our whole Draft process needs to be redone."
