Suppan Released
From Andrew Wagner of OnMilwaukee.com:
The Brewers have released right-hander Jeff Suppan, who was in the final year of a four-year contract.
Suppan 0-2 this season with a 7.84 ERA in 15 appearances. After starting the season on the disabled list, Suppan made two starts before being moved to the bullpen.
Since signing a $42 million contract with the Brewers after the 2006 season, Suppan posted a 29-36 record with a 5.08 ERA.
By releasing Suppan, the team clears space on both the 25 and 40-man roster, which will allow them to replace Todd Coffey, who was placed on the disabled list Sunday with a thumb injury.
EDIT: The JSBlog says the Brewers have purchased the contract of RHP Chris Smith from Nashville.

i'm actually mixed on this
on the one hand, i want to rejoice and play music.-
on the other hand, he’s been decent out of the bullpen and probably isn’t the biggest source of issues right now. so i’m actually confused by the timing of this.

Decent out of the bullpen?
He allowed 18 runs in 21 innings.

Decent is such a relative term.

he had two terrible outings
but was otherwise decent in relief.
look, i’m no suppan apologist – i hated the signing to begin with – but he’s been relatively okay in relief. has he been great? no. has he ever? not as a brewer (i’m trying to be nice instead of just saying “no”). so i don’t see what the straw was in order to break the camel’s back, so to speak.
yes, people are coming off the 60-day DL, but why not release him earlier? why now? that’s what i don’t get.
don’t get me wrong, i’m happy he’s gone.
by Capt Science on Jun 7, 2010 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions 3 recs
except
That he hasn’t been relatively okay in relief. He’s been 2.00 WHIP in relief and surrendered earned runs in 4 of his last 5 appearances. Frankly, he’s been worse in relief than he was as a starter.

what do his inherited runners/scored look like?
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 7, 2010 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions 3 recs
The straw...
I think the Brewers are in a mode of seeing who’s going to be able to help them next season. Suppan will be gone after this season, so no reason to have him take up a roster spot when they’ve got guys in Nashville that they need to decide if they’re worth keeping around or not.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
by sjlee on Jun 7, 2010 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions 3 recs
This
And precisely this. There was zero chance they were going to exercise his option. So if he’s not helping the team now, and he won’t help the team later, then why not use the innings you would have given him to evaluate a guy like Chris Smith, who could be a Brewer for 5-6 more years?
Now that's great tasting chicken!

I saw enough of Smith last year
Now we pay extra money to do so. I don’t hate the move but really see little reason to excited other than the possibility that maybe Melvin realizes that now would be a good time to turn over the roster because we are going nowhere this year.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
I think the excitement was more due to Suppan being released
than Smith getting promoted.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I guess but
I don’t tend to get to excited about moves that, at best, make us marginally better or are made to seemingly placate angry fans. Much like Firing Yost.

1) If you’re going to post a picture, don’t leave the subject line blank. Clicking the subject line allows people to minimize pictures.
2) Post pics in moderation – they slow down threads, especially high comment ones.
3) Animated gifs are allowed, just don’t go nuts with them. They also slow the threads down. Posting the same one over and over is a good way to make me hate you.

Also, I was pointing out to some complainy Giants fans of my acquaintance that “at least you guys don’t have Suppan and Bush to deal with” along with some nice stats over at Fangraphs, but now my response whine has been partially invalidated.
Sad to see Suppan go. I know he just wasn’t getting the job done, but by all accounts he was a good guy, so I’m sure the team will be sorry to see him go (on a personal level). Does that make the soap opera curse complete? (Hardy, Hall, Suppan, ?)
On the plus side Chris Smith has been pitching well at AAA:
21 innings 17 hits, 4 runs, 6 walks, and 29 strikeouts. Also has 17 saves and a sparkly 1.71ERA

Good guy?
Why does everyone think Suppan is a “good guy”. Because he smiled a lot? Because he claimed to have Christian values? I don’t know too many people who truly follow the words of Christ that think they should be paid 40 million dollars to do ANYTHING, and not even completely suck ass at it the way Suppan did (god it feels good to use the past tense).
Based on all I know about him, he is a greedy bastard who didn’t care one bit about his team or its fans. If he did, he would have quit baseball a long time ago and given the Brewers and their fans their money back.
Obviously, I don’t really think that Suppan should have done this, as no professional athlete is that generous or honest. But I also don’t think we should spend one second feeling bad for him, especially since the Brewers through away a handful of games and valuable experience that players with a future could have used, just to gently keep him on the roster for a couple of months.
And we wonder why the Brewers aren’t winning games – that’s obviously not the most important thing on the organization’s agenda. And the worst part is the good players can sense it.

He’s actually underrated, but that’s another can of worms…
Long overdue
Now that Suppan is FINALLY gone, can fire Macha too? Two possitive things in one day for the Crew would just be alot for me to hand emotionally though.
When's our next off day?
I haven’t checked the schedule and I’m only kind of kidding here…
I think they could have started the dump a couple weeks ago with their last Monday off day, but I understand this happening now (given previous moves). They’ve got a lot of guys coming back from the DL (15 and 60) and people had to move. I have to say that I’m pleased that someone is finally trying to save his job.
Suppan is a great guy with a great heart, just wish his arm was still worth a damn.
I know it’s just wishful thinking, however I hope someone picks him up (so we don’t have to keep paying the tab). The contract will nullify him getting another job.
It’s a good day in Brewerland. Let’s see if the axe falling kicks some of these guys in the ass and the Brewers can try and salvage whatever they can out of the season.
"The Milwaukee Brewers' line score is starting to resemble an international phone number" - Pittsburgh Pirates Radio during 20-0 shutout - 4-22-10
Even if someone picks Suppan up
It’ll only be for the league minimum ($400k)… not really saving the Brewers much money.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I'd just like to mention again that Suppan started the one and only game I've ever been able to attend at Miller Park
2008 interleague game against the Orioles. I was in from Cali for one night only. Between him and Aubrey Huff, a pleasant evening at the ballpark was ruined.
He also ruined at least one of my Cactus League games in 2009 with his presence on the pitching mound.
And they made a great pick too!
