First amusing moment
MLB Network’s opening montage kicked off with the same song that was the theme to the most recent Wrestlemania. Let’s hope we’re not in for draftees and executives bashing each other with steel chairs.
one guy who definitely won't be there
word is the reds are locked in on Chance Ruffin of texas
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
Or Harper
But I’m not holding out much hope for that.

Not impressed by Biddle or Jacksons
Scouting report, at least for that early in the draft both seem like projects which for the brewers means a wasted pick

What's not impressive about Biddle?
Other than his lack of pre-draft week hype. His potential and track record seem pretty impressive to me, as far as I can tell from reading stuff online

Law and Goldstein suggesting Pomeranz might fall
if so, Brewers should grab him.
In February, Ranaudo and Pomeranz were consensus top 10s, maybe even top 5s. Now MIL could end up with one; maybe both will be on the board. Ranaudo may not be the same guy he was, but Pom is.
Also, I’m chatting with Manning, Hulet, Kimmey, and Bryan Smith at Fangraphs throughout the first round.

Oh, and Grandal is falling.
That is completely insane to me. Yes, money, blah blah blah. But falling to 25? Completely insane. He can hit, and he’ll stick at catcher.

To me, money shouldn’t even be as much of a concern this season as it usually is. If a team doesn’t sign somebody, they get another pick in the supposedly much superior 2011 draft.

Also, money shouldn't be too much of an issue, period.
Aside from pissing off MLB by going over slot.
If you think Grandal is worth a $6MM bonus, he’s worth a $6MM bonus whether you pick him at 5 or 25. If you get to pick him at 25, you’re freaking lucky — it’s like trading for a higher pick, only at no cost.

Could be cuz this will likely be the last time in a while they have the #1 pick.
Might as well milk it for all its worth.

That's the only excuse for running down the clock here.
You’ve had months to think about this, and can’t trade the pick. Why didn’t you announce five seconds after going on the clock?
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Are you seriously asking this after two years of every team running down the clock in the first-round broadcast?
This is my first year getting to watch the broadcast.
I was on my honeymoon last year.

Fair enough.
At any rate, don’t expect anybody to jump the clock here. Downside of the recently increased attention to the draft.
I will say this...
…it was pretty cool to actually be at the very first draft that was televised back in 2007 when it was at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World. I just so happened to be on vacation in Orlando at the time it took place.

I'm not sure that increases his value that much.
Let’s say he gets to the majors as a 20 year old outfielder. The Nats now own him for ages 20-25.
If he takes a year more to get to the majors as a catcher, the Nats get six potentially better seasons (21-26), plus he plays a premium position.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Getting to the majors later means fewer years that he gets to play with Strasburg, though.
http://www.mlbsoup.com
I'm not even sure he'd get up later as a catcher. If his offensive skills are for real it's going to offset just about any defensive issues.
At any position but catcher, I think you're right.
But at catcher, pretty decent players are consistently held back because they don’t have enough experience or call a good game.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
IMO, virtually all teams push guys off catcher too fast.
There may be good reasons (focusing on offensive development, or one), but yeah … the Cards are right to push guys in the other direction, to tougher positions when possible.

One really has to wonder how many decrepit veteran catchers are simply in the league because teams restrict the flow of new talent like that.
Jason Kendall on line 1.
Gregg Zaun on line 2. Also, Mike DiFelice, Benito Santiago and Brad Ausmus are at the door, and Sandy Alomar just sent in a fax.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Also, Mike Redmond, Jason Varitek, Paul Bako, Eddie Perez and John Flaherty were in the basement.
No one knows how they got there, but they’d also like a word.

Someone who knows more about the draft than me:
Is this pick interesting because:
1) There’s no clear player that belongs in this spot.
2) The Royals are an inept franchise so no one knows what they’ll do.
3) Both 1 and 2?
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Both
The consensus seems to have been that the top 3 were well ahead of the rest of the draft class, so now things become less obvious.

the Royals do ok in the draft, but I think that they have bad player development, and tend to rush players, so its not a drafting problem, its more of an orgainzational one.

I could have seen them go for Sale or one of the HS arms there, they need pitching as badly as the Brewers do, although they need everything.

Well
The Brewers have been doing the biomechanics throughout the organization for the last couple of years. With Peterson being who he says he is, I would assume his role is expanded past the big club and his “guidance” permeates throughout the organization.
But to be clear, I said there’s a 10% chance he WON’T be back next year. Meaning there’s a 90% chance he WILL be.

But I think his talents are a little narrower than the average pitching “guru.” I think he has finite things he does well and those things aren’t things the Brewers needed at this point.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
I think you're right
He’s a good consultant for young pitchers pre-draft. Dad calls up and says, “My kid’s got a great arm but…” and Rick brings him in, gets his mechanics where they should be and ships him back to school.
"The Milwaukee Brewers' line score is starting to resemble an international phone number" - Pittsburgh Pirates Radio during 20-0 shutout - 4-22-10
Ah...
so we’re not so much speculating that Peterson’s going to get dismissed after the season, but that the club and he will make the (more or less) mutually amicable decision to part ways early?
I don't think he'll be fired.
I think the decision to change his role and keep him as a consultant is a strong possibility.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Jeff's asked a pretty good question in the Fangraphs chat...anybody know if they're doing the rapid-fire conference call style right from the second round tomorrow?
