This is always sad
He was never going to start 140 games, but he (kind of) beat out multiple catchers to get his spot, learn the pitchers and then lost his season. It always sucks to see a guy lose his season.
Feel bad for the guy, but it'll be good for the team to evaluate kottaras and lucroy for the rest of the season
he wasn’t going to be back next year most likely anyway
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
Does he have an option still for '11?
Awful signing…
Could have had Miguel Olivo for table scraps, or Ivan Rodriguez, even Jason Kendall is on pace to play somewhet respectably.
Are you being sarcastic?
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Because, whether you've noticed it or not
he wasn’t doing poorly at all, and was outperforming Kendall for less money.
Plus, are you really going to blame management for missing the total fluke that’s been Pudge’s season this year?
Shruggity.
Fluke
I’d say all three of those guys are playing far and above expectations.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Awful signing?
All three of those catchers signed for more money than Zaun. Plus, it’s not like the Brewers saw Zaun as anything more than a stopgap until Kottaras, Lucroy or Salome were ready.
Kendall is playing well now (much like he did in his first season with the Brewers)… let’s see how he’s doing by the end of the season.
Hindsight is always 20/20.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
It was a very solid signing
You of all people know the folly of results-based analysis.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Miguel Olivo?
He of the ‘more HR than walks’?
Pass.

Holy crap!
I didn’t realize that in his last four seasons he only had 49 walks in 1654 PAs.
That’s worse than Johnny Estrada.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
It was a bad signing from the get go
To offer a 39 year old any sort of contract to be your starting catcher is a bad idea. The guy caught 120 games once in his career, so it would have had to be expected he would either break down or not perform up to expectations.
Of the players that were also avaialbe, and much younger, none of them, apart from Ivan Rodriguez were given much more money than Zaun was. Olivo, Torrealba, Barajas, and Paulino signed for right around what Zaun did and had much better prospects of being a starting MLB catcher and performing at a much better rate than Zaun ever could have been expected to do.
Yes, but he wasn't really signed to be the starter.
Primary starter, but if you start 100/162 games, you’re not really a “starter”
Shruggity.
Why would we want a younger catcher?
It is pretty obvious that our starter in the near future is coming from our farm system. The younger guys would be pushed to play more and ask for more years on the contract, both things that would only stunt the growth of Kottaras, Lucroy, and Salome.

Easy answer:
We should have wanted a younger veteran catcher in order to open up another avenue of convenient criticism for a certain somebody when that FA catcher then ends up blocking our clearly superior in-house options.
Incidentally, here’s the pre-season ZiPS view on Zaun and those “much better” alternatives who wouldn’t have costed anything more that were mentioned two posts up:
Zaun, 39 years old, .243/.345/.373/.718 in 276 AB
Olivo, 31 years old, .242/..276/..435/.711 in 372 AB
Torrealba, 31 years old, .224/.292/.319/.611 in 263 AB
Barajas, 34 years old, .235/.282/.388/.670 in 327 AB
Paulino, 29 years old, .258/.322/.390/.712 in 310 AB
Aw shucks.

Can say what you want
But as I mentioned, Zaun was the only one that you could have put a high probability on breaking down at years beginning, and he did.
All of the other players listed are younger, have been more productive, and arent out for the year.
You can slam me all you want on this, but anyone who didnt think “What the hell is Melvin doing?” when Zaun was signed to be the primary catcher, is lying to themself.
I can't wait to hear about the great Craig Counsell signing of 2009
Failure is just success rounded down.
2 year window
Lucroy was/is about 2 years away still, and Salome was never going to be a major league catcher.
I see your point about not wanting to sign a young guy to anything long term because Lucroy was on the way, but he was still a good 2 years from that point in the offseason, and probably still is.
A lot of the catchers that were available on the free agent market last year signed for very short term deals. Zaun, with his age, was one of the last guys that should have been considered.
You're making some pretty big assumptions
First, that DM didn’t bother shopping around for other FA catchers
Second, that any of those other guys would’ve signed with the Brewers.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
True
But I figure if he had told them they would get to catch for Doug Davis they would have jumped at the chance. (And yes, I realize Davis was brought in after Zaun was.)
Why do you post here?
Pujols…he’s actually underrated

FWIW, Zaun has already been worth more than he will be paid by the Brewers
He’s been worth $2.40 million, and even with next year’s buyout will only be making $2.15 million
You are also entirely wrong about those other (worse) catchers being given similar contracts to Zaun’s.
Miguel Olivo is guaranteed $2.5 million this season, and if he catches 105+ games he will make $3.0 million total this season and be locked in at $2.5 million for 2011
Jason Kendall (!!!) is guaranteed $6.0 million over the next two years with an additional $250k in possible incentives
Ivan Rodriguez, who sucks and has already missed time on the DL, is guaranteed $6.0 million over the next two seasons
Barajas was a decent deal in hindsight, but he can make up to $1.9 million this year for production that projected to be worse than Zaun
Torrealba only makes $1.25 million this season, but he is a terrible catcher both offensively and defensively.
Ronny Paulino is so awful I’ll just pretend for your sake that you aren’t pretending you wished the Brewers had signed him to be the primary starting catcher.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Sucks he's gone, but
We don’t really need him now do we? I mean we really ought to evaluate who’s the best catcher for 2011. I don’t really see the difference between Kotarras and Zaun now except that Kotarras can’t really throw out baserunners.
captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee
Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.
No, we don't need him now.
Still is disappointing, he was doing well. And by the way I thought we were playing for 2012 now?
Shruggity.
Gregg Zaun
He had a fan club known as Zaunbies.
He brings the Z-game.
None of the other option are triple anything, let alone Triple G.
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
Have you even seen his website?
It is excessively professional.

Second catcher lost today
what with Salome requesting a permanent shift to OF.
Not really, at least to me
Has he made any progress defensively behind the plate? Maybe hearing he couldn’t play there got to him.
Failure is just success rounded down.
Sudden lack of depth?
Does this mean that after Lucroy/Kottaras, we have Cameron Garfield as the next prospect catcher? Wonder if we can convince Lawrie to move back now….
There's also...
Michael Roberts and Shawn Zarraga, but you’re right… not much depth.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I assume there will be actual veteran catchers in Nashville next year
Of the Kevin Cash, Corky Miller, JD Closser, et al. variety.
Failure is just success rounded down.
Yeah, he must've really gotten into his own head over catching.
Here’s the link.

Hopefully he plays well enough out there that we can say good bye to that overpriced butcher in the outfield named Corey Hart.
