For me the key phrase is “if” he has to be moved off the dirt.
Brett Lawrie, 2b, Brewers (Double-A Huntsville): Just 20, Lawrie was leading the Southern League in hits (102), extra-base hits (39), triples (11) and total bases (164). He’s a well-rounded, aggressive offensive player who remains indifferent defensively. Some reports also indicate his throwing arm has declined, meaning he may be more of a left fielder than a right fielder if he has to move off the dirt.
Also, Mike Minor made the 26-50 prospect list. Keep hitting Corey, keep hitting.

I would love to see Brett make the club this year, but we really don’t have room for another second basemen. Plus, I would hate to see him ride the pine. That doesn’t help anyone. If he could play shortstop……….Rickie is playing to good right now for us to move him for a rookie. Now, If we were to lose Prince and Brett could make the switch to 1st…….
We already have a shortstop too.
One who will likely be around longer than Weeks.
Lawrie can move to 1st or RF.
Shruggity.
So of the three most tradable positions on the Brewers roster, Lawrie is capable of playing them all
I’d say the Brewers will be keeping a tight hold of him.
Well,
People say he’s not that great at 2B, and has never played 1st or OF, so I’m not sure how you can say that.
Shruggity.
Change "is capable" to "might be capable" and add "plus he's cheap and under control for years...
… and you’re still at the same conclusion.

Yes.
Economically, I think it makes a lot more sense than throwing money at guys like Weeks and Hart, who’ve been sporadically good, often unavailable (Weeks) and sporadically awful (Hart). Do you want to pay Hart more than Braun got? Because that’s what it will take since he’s closer to free agency and Hart’s already turned down a deal similar to Braun’s.
As for Weeks, why would you spend money at the 2nd base if you’ve got a big bat coming up behind him in the system? If he can’t play 2nd, then signing Weeks makes a lot more sense, but obviously they think he still might develop at the position. The rumors are (at least today) that Weeks isn’t available. That could be because they intend to resign him, but it could also be that they want to wait until Lawrie’s ready in 2012…

Re: Hart
Did the Brewers ever end up actually offering an extension to Hart? All I could find was this:
Now the Brewers may approach Hart again [after approaching him about his 2009 contract] about a multiyear extension. There were some overtures in that direction last year with several players, but only left fielder Ryan Braun bit. Braun signed a new eight-year deal worth at least $45 million.
Brewers officials and Berry apparently had very brief discussions about an extension last year, but “it didn’t turn into anything,” according to Hart. It remains to be seen whether that changes this time.
“I definitely would be pro-multiyear contract,” Hart said. "I would like to be in Milwaukee my whole career if they let me. That’s why I reported to camp [before the contract was finalized], because I didn’t want to miss any days with those guys. I want to be a part of the team.
“We haven’t talked about [a multiyear deal] but when it comes up, I will definitely listen.”
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
