On how many pitches Corey Hart doesn’t swing at tonight.

Discussion starter:
Am I the only one starting to think that the Brewers should extend Hart instead of trading him?
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I was thinking of putting up a fan post, but tend to ramble in those
1) Looking at his numbers I think he’s being seriously undervalued because of one atrocious month (September 2008) and one injury-shortened down season (2009). He showed solid power in 1100+ PA in his AAA career, great power in 2007, and then fell off a cliff for a while for some reason, but now is back living up to his potential (although his .281 ISO this season is obviously unsustainable). It’s not like this player came out of nowhere.
2) It makes more sense to trade Fielder (who will be gone) and keep Hart (who “sounded eager” to try and negotiate an extension via TH earlier today). Without Fielder, Braun and maybe McGehee/Weeks are basically the only power bats in the lineup. Keeping Hart also gives the team more flexibility with Gamel/Lawrie, since Hart could conceivably move to 1B or could stay in the OF (maybe Braun could go to first).
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Number 2
Interesting as I missed the extension note. With weeks injury history and Fielder commanding a small fortune, Hart may well offer the smallest long term risk in signing to an extension.

Interesting points
Also, Hart could play 1B.

I don't know
Jeff Brantley used to talk about how Hart was the best of the Brewers’ young guys (vs. Weeks, Fielder, etc.).
Eagerly awaiting SBN Madison.
I guess it depends on the return
if they get some sort of decent pitching prospect in return I think that has more value to the brewers.
I also think that it doesnt really matter which one of the three (fielder, weeks, hart) is having a great year, that one would be the one on the block because of the value
I agree
I’m to lazy at the moment to look it up, but a few weeks ago someone posted a comparison of Corey Hart and Jayson Werth and it was pretty similar. I could see Corey turning into that type of player.
I wouldn’t be in favor of giving Corey away for anything, but if someone is willing to overpay with a decent #2 or #3 type starting pitcher it would be hard to say no.

We were pissed at Hart’s arby and didn’t even have a place for him in the lineup. If we get something good for him, awesome.
This is assuming
He is willing to sign an extension as well.

Ryan Braun: He loves it.
How are you going to motivate him?
Threaten to cut or trade him every season?
I’m sorry I’m being a prick, but I think he’s got bad contract written all over him. I’ve seen him flail at balls outside the zone for weeks on end and jog after balls hit into the corner too many times to think investing lots of money in him long term is a good idea.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

devil's advocate
braun as of late has also shown an extraordinary lack of discipline at the plate. would you be more inclined if hart were moved to 1B in the event of a fielder trade? or do you not support hart in any way as remaining on the team past this year?
i'm fighting all the french people i can find. happy cinco de mayo!
by sowingwildoats on Jul 12, 2010 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions
The latter.
I know you know this, but Braun struggled with plate discipline for a few weeks, not a few weeks every couple of months for his entire career the way Corey has.
Anyway, I just don’t think he’s a good investment regardless of where he’s playing. Not with the Brewers limited resources and the amount of cash he’s likely to draw.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Would you have the same opinion if Hart had never made any of his apparently controversial off the field comments?
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
I'd have the same opinion....
… based on his sporadic on the field performance, but I do think his off field comments reveal aspects of his personality that make him more prone to extended periods where he fails to play to his potential.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 12, 2010 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions
You're smarter than I am on this stuff...
… but his OPS+ was above average in 2008 and obviously this year it’ll likely be well above average, even if he tanks in the second half.
I’ll admit that part of my concern is that we’d be approaching him on a long term deal at a time when he’s doing something he’s never done before and unlikely to do again. I also don’t like the fact that he (today) talked about the fact that he hasn’t been approached on a long term deal yet. Which isn’t true, though it’s been a while. He was given an offer similar to Braun’s in 2008, which he declined. That’s his business and he was certainly entitled to bet on himself (and it looks like it might work out for him), but I’m bothered by the fact that a lot of his quotes this past 2 months have indicated that he was taken for granted, that his team was down on him, while giving little indication that those concerns were justified based on his performance over the previous season and a half. This offseason and the first half are the first time in a few years that he’s something a knowledge that there is no such thing as entitlement in the MLB, and based in part on those quotes and his history, I’m very concerned about his ability to stay disciplined, motivated and focused once he gets the long term, big dollar deal he’s been angling for the last 6+ years.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Fair enough
But I think as fans we can only really make judgments based on on-field performance. We don’t really have much insight into a player’s actual personality through the sporadic quotes he gives to the media (and the inferences we make from them)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
(Obviously there are exceptions, but I don’t think Corey Hart is Gary Sheffield or John Rocker or somebody)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

I rec'd this
If you extend him right now, you run the risk of having the Bill Hall contract all over again.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
It's similar to the people saying "re-sign Weeks"
earlier this year, after two months of playing well. You don’t resign guys when they’re at their peak, you re-sign them after they’ve played consistently for a long enough period of time.
