Davis to DL; Cain called up
Cain's call-up is for real this time. Maybe. Davis is suffering from elbow tendinitis.

Yes, he was on the DL recently...
but for a different ailment.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I think Davis is really suffering from

I've heard of that
It’s pretty rare. It’s amazing the team trainer’s caught it so early.

well....
Due to Jerry Manual’s situation, maybe now Macha realizes that Hart once played center.
not well, but he played it…

Besides
Just because he played it once before (actually 51 games since he came up) doesn’t mean that he was any good at it. Don’t forget, he also used to play 3B and 1B.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
He was actually an above average defender in CF
(The fact that it was three plus years ago and a tiny sample size aside)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
that's why I said
“not well”
SRB’s comment notwithstanding

With JEd and Go-Go platooning in CF
That leaves only Inglett as the only backup OF. Plus, it gives them another right-handed bat for PH.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
You would have to include whomever is not platooning
as a backup outfielder as well … But I think Inglett is more comfortable in the infield anyway, so I agree with the move. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is now a Cain/Edmonds platoon with Gomez used as a PH and PR.
No.
Cain everyday in RF, Gomez everyday in CF. That’s how it’s gotta be. I don’t care how much either of them might suck. That’s the future, and I’d rather them spend the rest of this season figuring out how to not suck.
Shruggity.

Better case scenario
Trade Prince, extend Hart and move him to 1B, Braun-Gomez-Cain outfield.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Close
You’d be better off moving Braun to first and Hart to left in that scenario. Most fielding stats view Braun as one of the worst defensive outfielders where Hart is merely really bad.
by kingcharlesxii on Jul 16, 2010 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions
But he has the classy looking equestian horse trot jump thing when the throws the ball
Doesn’t aesthetics count in UZR? His defense may not be great, but he looks good doing it!
Speaking of defense
If Escobar looks to be having a down year and we know Fielder and Weeks aren’t great defenders and we know Hart is really bad and Braun is terrible, does that mean the Brewers are fielding one of the worse, if not the worst defense? I don’t even know if McGehee is serviceable.
and hart's worse than fielder at 1B
at least according to minor league stats

Lawrie at 1B is the worst case scenario. He will play 2B or at least RF.
I’m not sure Gamel has enough power to play 1B.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Enough power to play 1st? What does that mean?
Does our 1st baseman need to be a power hitter? Also, you want to trade Cain to play Lawrie in RF?
Cain, Gamel, and Lawrie will either be Brewers next year or be in another organization.
Shruggity.
Either Cain or Gomez would play CF, probably the former.
And yes, our 1B should be a power hitter.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Gomez is looking more and more like a fourth outfielder
And I say that as one of his biggest fans.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Yeah, I like the guy too.
But to say with zero evidence that Cain is going to be better than a guy that was turned into Johan Santana is a bit of a reach. I still think Gomez has the better career.
Shruggity.
Well that’s why we can see play them both in the outfield for a season before Lawrie is ready (assuming he needs to play in RF). If Cain doesn’t pan out, then Gomez in CF.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Maybe
But why play Cain in RF if you’re gonna slide him over? Just to see if the bat can play?
Shruggity.
Yeah, and since there would be an opening
I’m not putting money on Cain being a star, but with the way Gomez is playing Cain might be a better long-term option in CF.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
But there's no opening
this year… unless Hart gets traded. I don’t like the whole “bring him up to sit on the bench” idea, it’s stupid.
Shruggity.
Yes, its stupid
But, I get all excitable and hope that this is really a precursor to a Hart trade. In which case, Cain will still sit on the bench while JEd plays RF, and Gomez in CF.

And I disagree with the whole "1st baseman must be a power hitter" mantra
We should probably dump weeks then, he’s got way too much power for a 2B… ditto for Lawrie.
Shruggity.
Since 1B is the easiest position to field, that’s where you can stick guys that can hit but not defend very well. Gamel’s upside is probably Lyle Overbay in that department…
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Oops, and my main reasoning
The opening at 1B opens up another spot for a power bat. Otherwise Braun is the only one on the lineup.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Braun sucked fielding balls at 3B.
Historically bad. I see no reason for him to be any better at 1B than he was at 3B. At least in the outfield he has a chance to use his athleticism to make up for his horrible, horrible fielding instincts.
Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.
Gamel's offensive upside
is Lyle Overbay? So much for him being a “prospect”, I guess. Everything I read says he can hit, not just be a meh average hitter.
Shruggity.
Good average, 20 HR power, that sounds like Gamel to me. That’s not a bad hitter, it’s just kind of boring at 1B.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Seems like a top prospect projection to me, especially if he's playing 3B.
20 HR might be low, but Gamel isn’t a 40 HR hitter either.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Well, to be honest
was Braun ever projected to be a 40 HR hitter?

Probably not, few players are
That doesn’t mean we should count on Gamel becoming one though.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
No, that's not what I'm saying
I’m just saying that Gamel and Braun basically have the same body type. And I don’t think anyone would have forecast him to be a 40 HR guy, so based on that I wouldn’t preclude Gamel from being able to do it.
I think its exceedingly rare to be able to expect a 40 HR production and be able to predict that from a minor leaguer.

speaking of Overbay
Guess who’s a FA this offseason.
How about putting him or The Muscle at 1B for a year?
http://www.mlbsoup.com
I'd probably put Lawrie there, but who knows who will be in our system next year.
I’m basically assuming we’ll have somebody who is a year away from the majors, whether it be Lawrie, or somebody we pick up in a trade.
http://www.mlbsoup.com
I think you're really selling Lawrie's defense low
He’s much more valuable if he plays anywhere other than 1B, even if he doesn’t stick at 2B (though I personally think he will)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Weeks is injury prone
Pick your poison? 120 games from a great talent or 150 games from sporadic talent? They’re probably going to be worth about the same, right?
so...give him up for a couple years
but outbid the yankees/sox/etc?

Please please please ...
… let this mean that a Corey Hart trade is near fruition! The clincher will be if (hopefully WHEN) Corey is pulled from the starting lineup tonight.
why bother to DL davis then?
no need for a fake-out here. it’s not like it matters if Doug outsmarts us or other GMs – it’s still before the no waiver trade deadline. After the no waiver deadline I could see something like that..

As long as we're fantasizing about our future rosters...
… when do we get to trade Edmonds to the blessed realm of Not St. Louis? I think it’s time to do the following:
“So Jim, we really appreciate all you’ve done for the team this year. Just doesn’t look like it’s our year. I know you want to play for a contender in September, so why don’t you list your preferences as to which ones you want to play for right on this paper here, in order, and we’ll see what we can do.”
*silent scribbling.
“Ok. Thanks Jim, I’ll get right on this.”
*door closes after JEd leaves the room. Melvin on phone.
“Hi Ned. You know how you love gritty vets like Kendall? Well have I got a guy for you…”
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Ok, I'm confused
Why are we talking about trading Rickie Weeks? He’s progressing as our 2nd baseman, and he provides a little juice and speed in our lineup.
I understand the intentions of trading Corey Hart, but the more I think about it, I’m thinkint it might end up being a mistake. I don’t remember any trades in the past decade that went in our favor. These prospects we keep gathering are not proven and don’t normally produce what we would like them to. There’s no way Hart will get Fielder money, and I think paying him a little less than Braun money and it’s a fair deal for both sides.
Fielder is the one we need to sell and get something out of now. We all know that of course and understand the reasons clearly.
Lawrie won’t be ready this year and maybe not next year.
I’m not too familiar on this Lorenzo Cain guy. Who is he? Injury prone? Is he reliable? Is he our future?
"No player is greater than a team."

Hmm
“Manager Ken Macha says Cain will give the team a right-handed power bat off the bench.”
The RH bat thing makes sense. Didn’t think he was a power bat.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
