SBNation Coverage
Today's game wasn't exactly a defensive clinic. The two teams combined for four errors and, if we counted only earned runs, the Brewers would have won just 3-2. Though there were a couple web gems from the Brewers late in the game.
Dave Bush turned in a very solid outing, going six innings giving up two earned runs and striking out seven hitters. Kameron Loe followed that up with two flawless innings and Trevor Hoffman finished the game in the ninth. Casey McGehee had a nice day, going 2-3 with a double and a three-run homerun (that HR accounted for all the earned runs that the Nationals gave up today).
All in all a nice little sweep of the Nationals as the Brewers improved to 47-53, just six games under .500 now. Up next: The NL Central co-leader Cincinnati Reds.

Six games under .500
The team hasn’t been that close since May 15 (15-21). They kept getting to seven under and then losing (including an alternating win-loss stretch in late June).
Also, Hoffman is one scoreless out away from getting his ERA below 7.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
1 in 4 if you're the Orioles.

didn't get to the game today
the other adults decided that this season isn’t worth a 90 degree day in the stands. And I didn’t feel like escorting several <6 year olds by myself.

I'd like to throw in some encouraging words for Bush
He was called “very mediocre” very recently. I think his ERA of.427 while not great is comparable to Bronson Arroyo, on the mound for the Reds tomorrow. Arroyo’s 10-5 this year. Casey just said, “Except for a couple of games, Bush has had a really good year.” Pull those couple of failures out and Bush’s ERA is probably in the lower 3s. I for one would be sorry to see him traded.
(I bet someone would like to weigh in here to explain why Bush is so mediocre.)

what if you threw away the games when we score more than 10 runs
and the games where bush pitches like crap.
does the universe vanish in a puff of smoke? Or does it just get taken over by the JS and OV?

I win the bet. Thanks but you
just restated what I said and then you “went galactic.”

5.03 K/9, 3.75 BB/9 is pretty mediocre (Not to mention FIP, xFIP, etc.)
Even assuming he isn’t mediocre though, why not trade him? He’s leaving at the end of the year either way, might as well get some sort of marginal return for him.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
He's leaving? It's been announced?
Some team wants his medicrity more than we do? Dang, I missed all of this “information.”

He is a free agent, yes.
Unless you want to extend a 31-year-old pitcher – who has been fairly mediocre – in a quest to once again recreate the same terrible rotation that torpedoes the Brewers’ playoff chances year after year.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
His season stats look crappy. Agreed. I'm saying without the two worst
his numbers are pretty good. His HRs allowed is a problem for sure. But, as Lucroy said “as long as he keeps his pitches down…” Macha has left him in way too long in at least three occasions – long after Bush lost it.
I’m just saying he hasn’t gotten the run support for many of those eight losses. With more of our vaunted run production coming his way, his season would look a lot better.
Hey, what can I say? I’m a fan.

More run production just means more wins. Which on this blog, will buy one ZERO credibility as a “better” pitcher. This is a blog populated by many people interested in Sabermetrics, and the more advanced tools it provides to measure a players productivity. By those measures, Bush has been mediocre. (See SRB above).
I would even take it a step further, and say that those “bad games” are a part of the package that is Dave Bush. Every year he has a few of them, and to remove them from the statistics for just one season is not going to provide you with reliable information about what kind of pitcher Bush is. That would be like saying “If you take out Prince Fielder’s April, he’s having a great year.” His April was bad, has historically been a bad month for him, but it is an unavoidable part of having Prince Fielder as a player for your team.
If you like Dave Bush, that’s fine. Many posters on this board have crushes and/or man-crushes on players who may not be the most productive statistically. Just don’t expect everyone to feel the same.

Been posting here since 2006. I get it. Thanks for the fleshing out, though.
I don’t feel everyone should feel the same. But there is a certain mentality that drifts to herd thinking here. For instance, no one seems to want to talk about Fielder’s RISP w 2 out number this year. It’s .177. Man crushes. That must be it. Braun’s not much better.
I guess you name your faves, then find stats to back up your bias….

For the sake of argument
Fielder’s AVG with RISP w 2 out is probably low because (wisely) no pitcher will give him anything to hit. You neglect to mention his .370 OBP, or the fact that the entire sample size is only 41 AB.
Braun’s sample with RISP w 2 out is again only 45 AB, with an apparently embarassing .817 OPS, 3 HR and 20 RBI.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
Pretty similar numbers to this Joe Saunders guy.

Interesting. 3 in a row. Something to follow.
We did win Thursday without Ueck though.
This next series will be a true karma test….
