Gamethread #102: Brewers (48-53) vs. Reds (55-46)
Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 27, 2010 7:10 PM CDT
Don't look now, but the Brewers have won five in a row and seven in a row at home.
Follow the jump for pitching matchups, lineups, and more
Yovani Gallardo (9-4, 2.45 ERA) will be on the bump for the Brewers tonight, making his second start since returning from the DL. He was sharp last time out, pitching 6 shutout innings against the Pirates, walking only one and showing no sign of a lingering injury. Gallardo has pitched at least 6 innings in 11 of his last 12 outings, dating back to May 12th, with the only exception being his 2.2 inning performance when he strained his oblique. Gallardo has fared pretty well in his career against the Reds; he's 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA against Cincinnati. Only two Reds have faced Gallardo at least 10 times.

| Joey Votto | 12 | .273/.333/.364 |
Gallardo will be facing Edinson Volquez (1-1, 7.56 ERA), who is also just returning from the DL. Volquez will be making his third start of the season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. He's also coming off a 50-game suspension after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. His first start of the season was a solid 6 inning, 1 ER performance. His second start wasn't as good. He lasted only 2 innings and gave up 6 ER on 5 H and 4 BB. His career stats against the Brewers don't look very good either; he's 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA against the Crew. Four Brewers have faced Volquez at least 10 times.

I’m really looking forward to a Reds sweep. We know Hart isn’t going to be traded and there’s at least a chance Fielder will be sticking around. Let’s just go ahead and win the whole f*cking thing (NSFW).
Did anyone else
see Fielder’s interview about being traded and think “he doesn’t want to be here”?

Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.

Why did Gallardo decide to vomit all over the field tonight? If they want to keep the team together in some misguided Doug Melvin delusion, they have to win. I guess Yo wants to send DM a message to get him some help and that doesn’t mean Fielder.

Probably would let Gallardo bat
With a short bench, probably doesn’t want to use a hitter that soon.

Macha would blow a reliever for a single out
Even if Macha wants to send him to the showers, he’d want to do it after the 2nd so he gets a real lead off batter.
The problem is
he may not want to blow a pinch hitter so early, either. Gallardo can hit, and even with a high early pitch count, I think Macha wants his ace in the game for at least another inning. It’s not quite out of reach yet.
You and Macha. Sheesh.

I know this isn’t one of the best times to bring this up, but I like his aggressiveness with baserunners, the way he uses his pitchers (most of the time), and because i feel our problems this year is an awful Starting Rotation and bad luck. I blame Doug Melvin for the Starting Rotation. He’s the one bringing the guys to the team. Our our Starting Rotation was at least average, we’d have a winning team right now.

Interesting
Did you know only 9 teams have stolen fewer bases than the Brewers this season, in all of baseball?
Its also interesting that his misuse of the bullpen is one of the reasons I dislike him, along with his mis-handling of young players.
Your ‘bad luck’ angle seems to be just what the front office wants everyone to buy. I’m not drinking the Kool Aid, although I can see why some folks would.

It’s tough to judge the number of Stolen Bases when we don’t have any .300 hitters. Although, I do see your point.
I disliked Ned Yost for his use of our pitchers.
I didn’t hear about the FO saying that until about 2 days ago. I’ve been on that thought for quite a while now.
I see your point along with everyone else’s in the dislike of Ken Macha. I am thinly on the edge though, I must admit. So I can’t say I’m a strong supporter or that would make me a liar. I simply feel though if we had at least an Average Starting Rotation, we would have a winning team right now.

-Vince Lombardi
I don't disagree with your final point
but I do not understand what having a .300 hitter has to do with stolen bases.

Yeah, either way
probably should have specified OBP to be more specific.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
Weeks' OBP is .374
Yet he’s only attempted to steal 10 times, and been caught 3. Also, league average for OBP is around .335, which means that there are 5 Brewers regulars (if you count JEd and Hart) who are above average in that category.
I think the problem you’re referring to is that some of the fast guys on the team (Gomez and Escobar) are bad at offense, and particularly getting on base. I also think that Macha is bad at allowing the players to run. I like first to third on a single, but that’s less Macha than it is the base coaches.

having guys being on base to have a chance to steal
Braun is struggling this year.
Hart is not the best stealer, but he is capable.
Weeks is good, should be given more opportunities though.
Gomez is good, but never gets on base.
Escobar is good, but also struggles to get on base. Although he has been better as of lately.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
I respect your opinion
But you had me laughing hard at “aggressiveness with baserunners.” He is the antithesis of aggressive. He is molasses. He is leg irons on the offense.
Considering calling up Cain or Gamel to pinch hit today
Is not an option….how is using wolf as a pinch hitter a bad choice? Only other options are counsell and edmonds unless I’m missing someone, and I wouldn’t want to use them in the 3rd either.
Or
having them (preferably Cain) start in Right Field, allowing us to use Inglett as a Pinch Hitter.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
My point is
That in the middle of this game we can’t suddenly call up cain or gamel. So what other option does he have at this point in the game?
JEd?
Counsell?

Yes, those are the only 2 options
Which is exactly my point. I’d like to save them for pinch hitting in the later innings in the hopes that the game would be closer. Third inning isn’t really the greatest time to use one of your 2 pinch hitters
you use it now
if leverage is high. ie, runners on base.
by PagsBrewCrew on Jul 27, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes, or George
A hitter. One of those offensive players.
Down by a few runs and with guys on base, Macha puts in a pitcher. Surprisingly, the Brewers did not score.
Even with George burned, if Lucroy gets hurt, McGehee can still be used in an emergency.
How many teams would use their backup catcher in that situation though?
You can’t blame Macha for not doing something that almost no manager would be done. Even though everyone disagrees with it its a pretty consistently followed baseball rule that you don’t use your only backup catcher.
If there is a room full of idiots
I’m not going to give any one of those idiots a pass just because he’s surrounded by other idiots.
I might pass on the room though
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Perhaps
But I wish Bill Veeck were still around so we could test that theory. We could collectively manage a game on-line.
Also
It’s a pretty consistently followed baseball rule that you don’t pinch hit for a pitcher with a pitcher while you still have legitimate bats available, especially with runners in scoring position and when you desperately need to score some runs.
I would not use Kottaras there, but I would more emphatically not use Wolf.
And then in like the 8th?
When you use a pinch hitter to take out cappy in the 6th-ish, and best case scenario you put in a pitcher that goes 2 innings, you are left with no one except george.
Fine I'll say even more
I think with guys on base and Weeks on deck, that was a situation where we had to take a crack at getting back in the game. No guarantee we’d have the tying run up again in the 8th, anyway.
I'm not disagreeing that use george is a viable option
I’m just realistic and know it will never happen.
If Macha is going to make stupid decisions,
he could at least make the correct stupid decision.
All I’m gonna say.
FWIW
Counsell is the emergency “outfielder” in that he would play SS and Escobar move to OF should anything happen to a starter.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
That was on AP writer Colin Fly's twitter btw
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Cain
Isn’t Cain still ineligible to return to Milwaukee for a few days? How long ago was he sent down?
He can come up and down as many times as he wants
in an option year, which this is.

This I actually agree with

Frankly, I agree
I was thinking about this earlier today. He has to at least be in the conversation. He’s among the league leaders in most of the important offensive statistics, and he’s hitting leadoff. In a year when nobody is hitting for a whole lot of power, Rickie is putting up monster power numbers.
Really, I’d say a pitcher has got to win it this year, though. Rickie’s got to be a lock for Silver Slugger, though, at least.
I just find it amusing

Since I seem to have neglected him in favor of Prince and others, but he’s been a big barrel of suck tonight so I don’t have a chance to use it.
So, of the four Brewer personality marketing ads:
- Gallardo isn’t hitting the corners

- Braun can’t hurt a fly
Could be interesting...
I imagine them to be scenarios where Gomez manages to somehow spectacularly mess up everything in a “wacky” or “zany” way, followed by a laugh track.
Then, all the other Brewers will be like, “Oh, Carlos !!!!!!!!!!!”, and Gomez will stare at the camera and shrug. Cue laugh track again.
