SB Nation Coverage
Travis Wood and Chris Narveson had a pitchers' duel going early, as Narveson worked through five scoreless innings as the Brewers clung to a 2-0 lead. The wheels came off in the sixth, though, when Narveson and Kameron Loe combined to allow five runs, and the Reds coasted off from there. All told, Narveson allowed three runs on six hits in five innings, walking one and striking out two.
Other stuff:
- Rickie Weeks went 1-for-4 with an infield single in the game but was stranded on third in the eighth, ending his runs scored streak at eleven games and his home run streak at three.
- With the Brewers down to three healthy outfielders once again, Joe Inglett got the start in right field for the sixth time in seven days and struck out in all three plate appearances.
- Alcides Escobar had the Crew's lone multi-hit day: He went 2-for-4 with a double batting out of the #2 spot.
- A day after using four relievers and a position player on the mound, the Brewers used five relievers today (Loe, Coffey, Braddock, Villanueva and Riske)
- Prince Fielder was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes in the eighth inning.

At least the front office should have no delusions about competing now.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Why it's frustrating to be Prince
Once the game is decided pitchers don’t even need to pretend they’re thinking about pitching to him, he got nothing but fastballs outside the zone.

kinda hard to fault the umps at all then
he offered. those last 3 may have been border line, but it’s not a pattern that the umps established to anti-squeeze him

it overlapped with the fuzzy zone
therefore, it’s perfectly discretionary (ie, based on where he’s standing or the path the ball took)
if the ump had been calling that a ball all day long to other lefties, then he’d have a beef for sure.

I know the pitching is what cost us the last two games...
… but starting Inglett the whole series and having JeD and Hart on the roster but largely unavailable against a team that hit’s like the Reds is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. I understand not wanting to put them on the DL, but this might have been the last significant series we’ll play all year. It’s a shame they didn’t manage the roster well enough to avoid travesties like Wolf being used as a pinch hitter in what was, at the moment, still a winnable game.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

You're under a mistaken impression
You’re of the mind that the Brewers should be trying to win games. This is not the purpose of their season at this point.
Right now they’re worried the trade deadline and playing politics with Edmonds while praying they get a good offer for some of their vets.
Once the trade deadline is past, they will dog it through the rest of August trying to win just for the hell of it.
Come September it will be time to give up the pretense of trying to win and instead
a) give Cain the chance to put Gomez as the 4th or 5th outfielder on the spring training roster
b) audition Gamel for offseason trading
c) Showcase Lawrie for potential 2012 season ticket holders
d) Get Hoffman 600 saves if he’s still on the roster
They’re not trying to win right now.
I see September's priorities thusly
1) Play the veterans every day to avoid losing 90 games, let the young guys learn on the bench
I guess I should have said priority.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
I hope they can Macha & Melvin in September
so they can’t do that

I don't think anyone on the management side wants to see 90 losses
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
if i'm convinced they've made an attempt to put a significantly better team out there on the field next year
I’ll take the higher draft priority, thank you very much.

Don't think there was any
“Outmanaging” in either of these last 2 games.

And to the extent that there was, I think it had less to do with Macha's abilities and decisions....
…. than it did with the limited options he had at his disposal given the condition of the roster right now.
