Star-divide

Manny Parra (3-9, 5.67 ERA) will be starting for the Brewers tonight. Parra, well... he hasn't been very good this year, although he has been better than last year. His K/9 are up this year from 7.5 to 9.1, his BB/9 are down from 5.0 to 4.3 and his H/9 are also down from 11.5 to 10.8. He's also been even unluckier this year than he was last year; his BABIP is up from .353 to .361. I guess that means that we can't give up on him yet. The good news is that Parra is 1-0 with a .86 ERA against Arizona. Only Justin Upton has faced Manny Parra at least 10 times; he does not have a hit but he does have two walks and an RBI.

Parra will be facing Barry Enright (3-2, 2.81 ERA). The D-Backs took the 24-year-old lefty in the second round of the 2007 draft. He was on his second tour of AA this season when the D-Backs called him up. His numbers in the minors were solid across the board: a 1.252 WHIP, 7.3 K/9inn, and only 1.9 BB.9 inn. His numbers through seven major league starts this season are pretty similar to his minor league numbers, altough he has been a little lucky, with a .275 BABIP. No Brewer has ever faced Enright.

Epic

Phillips walked to the plate. Molina and Phillips had words. Phillips takes off his helmet, Molina gets in his face. Thing escalate. Then both benches cleared, some pushing and shoving (Looks like Cueto was kicking peeps) and then TLR and Baker got tossed.

Rollen restrained Carpenter. That’s about it.

Cueto kicking people

Smart move for a pitcher, but still a very funny mental picture.

Cain in RF, Dickerson in CF?

Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.

by TheJay on Aug 10, 2010 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

Cain clearly lacks the ability to play CF

But its more likely has got to do with familiarity of the corner/angles/bounces, perhaps?

Doesn’t the ball “curve” more when hit to corner spots? Perhaps he has a hard time figuring it out where it’s going compared to center.

Was in no man’s land down the LF line. Rickie had to make a running grab, then spin & fire. Throw was toward 1st base & Young is very fast.

Rickie Weeks was running backwards...

Momentum carried him away from the play resulting in a not-so-good throw.

Young tagged, Weeks made a really nice throw, but Young slid on the outside and Lucroy just missed him

well i wanted to know if it was a good idea to trade edmonds in the first place.

by ilikeburritos on Aug 10, 2010 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Again I ask:

Was there any reason whatsoever not to trade Edmonds?

by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 10, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok, I'll lay it out then
  1. JEd was signed for one year. In fact, there was a clause in his contract that if he didn’t make the team out of camp and/or wasn’t with the big league team at a certain point, he could opt out. He was a flier, a second thought.
  1. The Brewers are out of contention, and have very close to a zero per cent chance of reaching the playoffs this season.
  1. Teams that are out of contention would do well to sell off veteran and/or near expiring contracts in order to get SOMETHING out of them, other than draft picks should the player be a Type A or Type B free agent (JEd will be neither).
  1. So, the Brewers essentially gave 2+ months of a 40 year old OF with an achilles near to rupturing, having his best year since 2005 after having sat out for a year in 2009, and on a super cheap one year contract to the Reds for 4 years of control of a guy who has put up some very nice numbers in the minors, has an OK upside, and can be a 4th OF for 400k next season.
  1. Why not?

My favorite Tom tweet today:

Will Curtis Dickerson be the first Brewer to be in the annual team photo without having actually played for the team yet?

"If we want to sign a Type A free agent, we would lose a second-round pick, but we don't have a way to get picks back. Our whole Draft process needs to be redone."

Mini pseudo-rally to get our hopes up and then let them come crashing down with a groundout/popout/strikeout/pickoff/etc

Get worse at predictions!

"I think this decision could go either way," Baseball Tonight legal analyst John Kruk said.

Jeez, was that the first 2-1 loss we've had this season?

I’m used to seeing 12-5 or 5-2. I didn’t think we’d win with Manny on the mound, but tough loss considering he kept us in it.

My bad, we lost 2-1 in Atlanta last month

But that’s been it. We haven’t even lost a game 1-0, it’s always a high scoring game otherwise.
