Game Thread #115: Diamondbacks (45-69) at Brewers (53-61)
Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers, Aug 11, 2010 7:10 PM CDT
Snakes! It had to be snakes!
Follow the jump for conversation -- and more exclamation points!!! -- on tonight's game!
Starters!
David Bush (5-9, 4.48) makes his sixth- or seventh-to-last start for the Brewers tonight. For the year, the numbers that you want to see low (WHIP, BB/9) are higher than Bush's career averages (1.55, 3.5, respectively, vs. 1.29, 2.3 in his career), and the numbers that you want to see high (K/9, for instance) are lower than Bush's career averages (5.6, vs. 6.1 in his career). On the plus side ... my mother taught me never to blow smoke up people's patoots when I had nothing good to say. Hence: that's all I've got on Dave Bush.
For the Snakes, former ChiSox prospect Daniel Hudson (3-1, 3.73 for CHW and ARI) is on the slab. Since being acquired as part of the deal that sent Edwin Jackson to Chicago, Hudson's made two starts for Arizona. He went eight strong innings in his D-backs' debut, allowing a single earned run to the Mets in a 14-1 Arizona romp. Hudson followed that performance with a seven-and-two-thirds, one-run, three-hit outing against the Padres in a 2-1 D-backs victory.
Lineup!
2B Rickie Weeks
LF Lorenzo Cain (for the soul ... before I sputter out)
RF Corey Hart
1B Prince Fielder
3B Casey McGehee
CF C-Dick Play Center
SS Al Escobar
C Jon Lucroy
RHP David Bush
Bullpen!
Zach Braddock pitched .2 innings (13 pitches) on Monday.
Kameron Loe pitched 1.1 innings (11 pitches) on Monday.
John Axford pitched 1 inning (21 pitches) and blew a save on Monday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched a Bad Trevor inning (37 pitches) on Monday and 1 inning (8 pitches) Saturday.
LaTroy Hawkins pitched 1 inning (21 pitches) yesterday.
David Riske pitched 1 inning (18 pitches) Sunday.
Todd Coffey pitched .2 innings (12 pitches) yesterday.
Chris Capuano pitched 2 innings (25 pitches) yesterday.
Enjoy the game!

Ok, I'm gonna ask the obvious question
since I’m the only one who doesn’t get it… what is this?
"Staying up to watch the 10 o'clock Olds? This just in--Go to bed."
I hesitate to post this in case it's not true
But isn’t it possible that the Cardinals are playing up Larue’s injury to garner sympathy from the MLB? They claim he has a “mild concussion” and I’m not really sure what that means, especially considering he looks pretty unhurt in all the videos of the fracas.
"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be." - Yogi Berra
Gomez wanted to stay in with his concussion
He didn’t look too bad either.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
But he got hit in the head with a fastball
Larue didn’t look like he took anything close to that impact. Still, I guess we give him the benefit of the doubt.
"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be." - Yogi Berra
Who knows
Maybe he’s had concussions before and is more susceptible to them. He looks like the type who has head-butted a few walls in his day.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Go Brewerrrsss!
Let’s win one, huh?

Chris Young is like their Corey Hart this year

I always think of him as Crispy Young
Because the pitcher in San Diego meant the OF had his middle initial (B.) listed in many sources.

Nice first for Bushy

Out of play, runs

Man, and White Sox wanted to offer us this bum?
Dodged a bullet on that one, phew…

Bill Hall tonight
3-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R
Has played every position but 1B and C.

Is mykenk loving the Hudson performance thus far?

It sure sounds like Brian and Bill think Cain is going to play CF in 2011 with Braun and Hart at the corners
I’m sure Macha will do his best to try and jack that up.

Gomez isn’t shy about the fact he would have avoided a DL stint in the first place. The Brewers list his injury as a concussion, but Gomez says he suffered no symptoms at all other than a sore spot where the Brian Schlitter pitch struck the left side of his helmet. The Brewers say results of a cognitive and motor skills test were inconclusive so they decided to be cautious, but Gomez says that test was flawed because of a poor Spanish translation.
“I really don’t understand the reason,” for the DL assignment, Gomez said, “but it’s OK. I’m ready to go.”
I understand the reason, even if you don’t Carlos. Its because you’re worse than terrible at the plate, and your defense hasn’t shown up this season, which was supposed to be your redeeming quality. Therefore, as with the Twins before them, the Brewers are exploring other options for their CF position. It appears you are going to be without a starting job, as Lorenzo Cain looks to be able to outperform you at the plate, and possibly have the upside in the field to equal what you have accomplished. The only fortunate thing for you, Carlos, is that Ken Macha is the manager, and as such, may not make the right choice about your future. In addition, The Mustache may feel it necessary to justify sending his ++defensive, all-star short stop to the Twins for you, and force Ken’s hand.
So, all is not lost, Carlos. You may have a future in Milwaukee yet.

Yeah
and suddenly, he’s started breaking out this “I don’t understand” card. Do the Brewers really not have someone who is bilingual that is paid by the team to help with translations?

Not right, but none of the team’s Spanish is either.

But it’s okay, U2 also throws 14 in there whether it makes sense or not

I liked Provus' silver lining that at least they were all solo shots
Of course the last three didn’t have a choice.

Only if it was Beckham + low pitching prospect or Viciedo ++

It wasn't in response to you
Since you couldn’t understand why the Brewers traded JEd for Dickerson, I didn’t think responding to your post was warranted.

so, looking at how the pitching has been this season:
is it the pitchers’ fault or is it the coach’s fault?

That's Kerwin Danley
And yes, this crew’s chief is on vacation, but even so they may be the worst in the league.

Gameday
shows pitch one as a fringy outside corner pitch. It was the only called strike. The other two were swung on by Prince, out of the zone. I wasn’t griping about the umpiring, I was commenting on the terrible approach by Fielder.

Yeah I wasn't commenting on his work today
I was more commenting on this crew’s ineptitude as a whole. C.B. Bucknor is consistently voted the worst in the league by the players.
"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be." - Yogi Berra
Hudson is going up the ladder for nearly every strikeout
The catcher sets up a lot higher for the 3rd strike, batters can’t catch-up with it.
From McCalvy
Dave Bush is the first pitcher to allow 4 consecutive HRs since the Yankees’ Chase Wright on 4-22-07 at BOS. Wright now a #Brewers farmhand.
Wright’s epic awfulness that day was a big deal for the Yankees – I’ve heard Yankees fans refer to it not too long ago. Bush does the same thing, and none of us are even surprised. Dang, this team is bad.
The fact that was only three years ago
Takes away from the fact this was only the third time a pitcher has done that in baseball history.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Probably should have
Walking him would have been better.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Big deal.

Agreed.
Is there really any substantive difference between, say, the fourth and eighth picks in baseball, or we just saying this to make ourselves feel better about losing?
by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 11, 2010 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions
There's a huge difference between, say, a top 3 picks and an eight pick.
Brewers just need to keep losing.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
We're 9.5 games out of the third pick, 8 games out of fourth.
We’re getting a fifth pick at highest.
