That doesn’t sound good. Is Hawkins done for the year? At this point they may as well just let him rehab till ST.
Anyone have a breakdown on McClendon?
Basically...
25 yo control pitcher
2010 stats line:
2;.44 ERA, 1.211 WHIP, 55.1 IP, 53 H, 1 HR, 14 BB, 44 K
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Sounds like someone that "pitches to contact"
Is that all that common in a reliever? I’ve always seen that as a trait of a starter to prolong their outings by keeping their pitch count consistently low. Relievers don’t really have that concern. Maybe he’s up for long relief.
And can we get a better explanation for what's wrong with Hawkins?
‘Shoulder weakness’ is the best we can do? Can’t we make something up about his labrum or his AC joint or something?
SRS BSNS
Correct
Per TH:
“To make room on the 40-man roster, the Brewers transferred catcher Gregg Zaun from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Zaun already was out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.”
Oddly, why didn’t they move Zaun to the 60-day when he announced he was done for the season?

Probably didn't need the spot at that point
I don’t remember what the roster situation was when he finally had the surgery but you can’t move a player to the 60-day DL if your 40-man roster is not full.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
That's right
I forgot about that rule. Thanks for the clarification.

They still thought
they could get away with selling Zaun shirseys for full price if he were still on the 40.
Still makes me mad that you can buy a Zaun shirt (Hawkins too, incidentally) and not yet a Lucroy without going the custom route.
Brandon Phillips understands.
Heh...
if you look hard enough, you can still find Hardy shirts.
I was at Kohl’s this weekend and most of their Brewers stuff was on clearance. I found the usual ones… Molitor, Yount, Fielder and Braun. I also found a Gamel, Hoffman and Gomez.

THblag said Zaun to 60 day DL.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
So how does this work
Does Hawkins ride out the rest of the season on the DL getting paid than he retires after season since he is washed up or could he just retire would he collect his pay check for rest of this season? I am guessing not so the will not just walk away
"It's a joke. It's all a joke.
There's a lot of miles on that arm
6th among active players in pitching appearances… about 250 behind Trevor
Right
Maybe being done for the season wouldn’t be a bad idea. Let his arm rest and get some rehabbing in at the beginning of the year so he could be ready for ST.

As long as he's under contract, for sure
We’re going to pay for him anyway, might as well have him healthy for next year
David Riske v. 2.0?
"If we want to sign a Type A free agent, we would lose a second-round pick, but we don't have a way to get picks back. Our whole Draft process needs to be redone."
~Doug Melvin
More like Riske Lite
He’s not as expensive as Riske was/is, but hasn’t pitched nearly as much.

Two thoughts
1) Carlos Villanueva has really fallen out of favor.
2) It is neat to see a guy who flies under the radar get his shot.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Not sure
He’s pitched 4 games in Nashville since his demotion and has been solid.
He’ll probably be brought back in Sept, but he’s either on his way out or they just want to see what McClendon has, since they already know what they have with CV.

Very interesting
I really like Villa so I hope they keep him around. He has been solid in Nashville. Could they be trying to pull a JJ Hardy and keep him in Nashville a long time to save a year of service time?
Possible, but doubtful
CV won’t be a FA until 2013. I think Hardy was closer to FA until they sent him down to Nashville.

And what about Stetter?
Braddock’s arm was bugging him recently — and he’s not a LOOGY to begin with — and Cappy’s the long guy, and still Mitch toils at Nashville.
SRS BSNS
I think Stetter wore out his welcome early
He had a terrible spring and wasn’t known for his control at the best of times. His numbers at Nashville aren’t great either. It will be interesting to see what they do with him after the season.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
I'd say Stetter is done
He looked like junk, horribly bad. They should try to move him for some thing..
The first and second sentence seem at odds with each other
Why would a team want a LOOGY that looks horribly bad?
Sure. Fresh start… lefties are like precious little delicate flowers. Perhaps swap for another struggling pitcher and see if fresh system fixes it.
I guess I figure if no one was willing to trade for Renyel Pinto
No one will want Mitch Stetter.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
want to trade for*
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
That was actually my first thought
that huh, they didn’t choose Villa to take his place. I’ll assume they want to see what they have in McClendon.
Brandon Phillips understands.
Why bother with CV until Sept?
I’m guessing there’s a pretty good chance he’s non-tendered after the season.
I’m amazed we all don’t have shoulder fatigue, from all the heavy sighs we make when the Brewers lose another game.

The sighing leads to
lung fatigue. Now, the facepalms, that could wear out a shoulder.

and the way the brewers have been losing
causes extremely high blood pressure

Do the trainers/doctors get some blame?
He had to pass physicals and the like, but he’s never been effective since signing him. This shoulder fatigue is nothing new.
Has a post-PED realignment on value of older guys begun? It seems like a lot of vets were having trouble getting contracts they were expecting this offseason. It seems like old guys are breaking down more according to how we expect old guys to break down. I think DM has been behind the curve on that, but I’d be surprised if any GM misses the boat next year.
that's not true.
i recall in his first five appearances he had stellar looking stuff. then a blow-up with the cubs.
i'm fighting all the french people i can find. happy cinco de mayo!

yes at first the Hawkins/ Hoffman 8th 9th pair seemed good
than it went horribly wrong
"It's a joke. It's all a joke.
McClendon will wear #58 according to the game notes
Last worn by the mortal Jesus Colome.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
I have no idea why I remember it, but
McClendon once took a no-hitter into the 9th inning, back before the Crew decided he wasn’t gonna make it as a starter after all. Some googling shows it was on May 18, 2007 for the Low-A WV Power…here’s the game summary.
