Game Thread #117: Brewers (54-68) at Rockies (59-55)
Milwaukee Brewers at Colorado Rockies, Aug 13, 2010 8:10 PM CDT
The Brewers are 1-0 in games where Mike McClendon is on the roster but doesn't pitch. Can they keep the streak alive?
Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup, lineup and more!
Jorge de la Rosa (5.01 ERA, 4.44 FIP) is making just his 11th start for the Rockies, after missing the entire months of May and June with a finger injury. He struggled immediately after coming off the DL, but has been pretty good since: He's posted a 3.06 ERA in his last four starts, striking out 26 over 25 innings. The Rockies, however, are just 1-3 in those games.
JDLR is a hard-throwing lefty, averaging 93.6 mph with his fastball and relying heavily (29% of pitches) on a changeup. According to FanGraphs, the change has been his only above average pitch this season, but it's very good at +1.91 runs per 100. He's facing the Brewers for the first time this season, and no Brewers have faced him ten times or more. Ryan Braun has faced him nine times, though, and had some incredible results: He's hitting .857/.889/1.571 with two doubles and a homer in nine PAs.
And, of course, de la Rosa is a former Brewer, posting a 6.23 ERA over 95.1 Brewer innings between 2004 and 2006.
Meanwhile, Yovani Gallardo (2.86 ERA, 2.69 FIP) returns to the scene of his worst major league outing. On August 8, 2007 Gallardo lasted just 2.2 innings against the Rockies, allowing eleven runs on 12 hits and three walks in a game the Brewers lost 19-4. Gallardo has struck out 19 batters in 12 August innings, allowing five runs on ten hits over that time.
Gallardo is the 2010 NL leader in strikeouts per nine innings (10.1), and is also in the top ten in home runs per nine (fourth), strikeouts (sixth), ERA (eighth) and wins (ninth). Not bad for a guy who's only 24. Gallardo is averaging 92.3 mph on his fastball, and according to FanGraphs it's the best heater he's thrown over his career, worth +0.83 runs per 100.
Gallardo is facing the Rockies for the third time this season: On Opening Day he allowed three earned runs over seven innings in a loss, and on June 19 he allowed a run over six innings in a no decision. Three Rockies have faced him ten times or more:
| Player | PA | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS |
| Brad Hawpe | 13 | .167 | .231 | .500 | .731 |
| Todd Helton | 13 | .364 | .462 | .455 | .916 |
| Troy Tulowitzki | 10 | .444 | .500 | .667 | 1.167 |
Via Tyler Barnes, here's tonight's lineup:
Rickie Weeks 2B
Corey Hart RF
Prince Fielder 1B
Ryan Braun LF
Casey McGehee 3B
Lorenzo Cain CF
Alcides Escobar SS
Jonathan Lucroy C
Yovani Gallardo P
And in the bullpen:
Kameron Loe pitched 1 inning (10 pitches) yesterday and also pitched on Wednesday.
John Axford pitched 1.2 innings (35 pitches) yesterday.
Zach Braddock pitched 0.1 innings (21 pitches) yesterday.
Todd Coffey pitched 0.2 innings (22 pitches) Wednesday.
David Riske pitched 1 inning (15 pitches) Wednesday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 inning (12 pitches) Wednesday.
Chris Capuano pitched 2 innings (25 pitches) on Tuesday.
Mike McClendon pitched 4 innings (32 pitches) for Nashville on Sunday.
Enjoy the game!

I hope this continues.
Then people can stop saying “We need to keep giving Manny a chance, just look at De La Rosa!!!”
either that or the pitch tracker on the MiLB boxscores is wrong
that’s where i got it from yesterday, looking at Nashville’s boxscores for this week.
It looks like Las Vegas was hacking
13 pitches in the 6th, 6 in the 7th, 7 in the 8th, and 6 in the 9th. (gameday pbp code)
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
not surprised that they do hack
i recall that was why a lot of people were doubting J.P. Arencibia’s performance this year—PCL-inflated stats. from cursorily looking at the boxes for this Vegas series there were a lot of far-hit balls about.

Good idea. The raw power and instincts are there. He’ll have a few outfield assists in his career.

I wonder how many of Weeks' RBI are from pitchers
They’ve gotten on base in front of him a number of times. Without Kendall, it doesn’t feel like we have a black hole at the bottom of the order this year. Go wookie!
Looks like he has driven in 5 pitchers so far
Bush 4 times (I believe one or two were pinch-running appearances though) and Wolf once. I thought it would be more but he has only 8 HR with runners on base and pitchers are not often on 2nd or 3rd for him and don’t often score from first.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Good points
It just seems like it should be more. He’s at least getting useful production from the 7 and 8 holes unlike previous years for our leadoff hitters. Hardy, Kendall, pitcher was always such a brutal lineup.
Yeah, I was only looking at pitchers
It is safe to assume most of his non-HR RBI are from guys in the 7 & 8 spot.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Uh, he wasn't on the bag
Wasn’t he a full step off 2nd when he received the ball? Props for trying to turn the triple play, but where was the ump on that one? Do the umps have a pool on calling triple plays?
he was
pretty far away from 2nd when he caught that.

rockies replay makes it look close
but i wasn’t really paying attention when they showed it. the announcers mentioned that weeks would have been safe if he kept his legs down, but didn’t specify if the fielder was off base.
by Capt Science on Aug 13, 2010 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions
That was a "no chance in hell" triple play
Not only was that out very questionable at 2nd, but no way they would have had Hart at first. That was a selfish attempt by the umps.

Lazy not selfish
I think the calls at 2nd base are just lazy. That said, I suppose they get nearly all of the calls right and I only remember the borderline calls.
What good fan doesn't remember the borderline ones ;)
Umpiring has been terrible this year though

I'm listening on the radio
and have no idea how close he was to base, but that’s a play where, for both players’ safety, the fielder doesn’t have to actually touch the base and 99% the runner will be called out.
"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be." - Yogi Berra
It wasn't the typical stop and get out of the way play, though
He was in the motion of stepping off the bag before he even caught the ball. I know they tend to give the tie to the baseman in that case, but this was really extreme. The Brewers broadcast isn’t showing any replays which seems to imply it was a blown call.
Was that leap necessary?
It seems like Tulowitski could’ve set his feet and made the throw.
That’s the first time I can remember seeing a force at 3rd as the only possible out on a play. It bugs me when a team intentionally walks a guy with 1st base open to “set up the force.”
*sigh* obviously he has to raise his UZR rating to ensure a sabermetrically sound golden glove *gesh*

Gah
Just because you have the green light doesn’t mean you have to go in baseball. Hard to blame a pitcher when he gets so few at-bats. There’s always a part of me that wishes he wasn’t so good at pitching and we could have a pinch-hitter with some pop coming off the bench. It’d certainly help his hitting when he’s on the mound, too! Oh well. I guess I’ll take a pitcher with the 8th lowest ERA in the NL, instead.
Yeah, I didn't like that call
When you’re getting shutout, take one more shot at a bunt.

huh?
No way. Gallardo is a fine hitter. You have to be a hideously bad hitter to make a sacrifice bunt with no outs worthwhile. It’s too early and there’s too much power at the top of the lineup to justify a sacrifice bunt there on a 3-1 count. I just wish Gallardo would’ve not swung at a pitch he couldn’t drive.
Nah
Good hitter or not, take the sacrifice. What are the chance he doesn’t hit in a DP? I’m sure they have the numbers, but I just didn’t think it was worth the risk.

Is that hitch in his delivery only when there aren’t any baserunners? Otherwise, a case could be made that every pitch De La Rosa throws is a balk.

That was only the first mistake he made with his change up all night. I guess he’s seen a lot more of JDLR than the rest of us have. We know Bush seems to max out around 90 pitchers almost magically. There were probably warning signs we wouldn’t know to look for.
JDLR was at 114 pitches, though.

He's working on his fourth time through the order
Playing with fire.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Sigh...
Back to baserunning follies.

I still think it's possible our signs suck.

That was my first thought.
Steal attempts have been suspiciously bad for the last month or so.

It took them a few months to come up with throwing behind batters after HBP
You can’t expect the signs to change any quicker.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
when the only sign your third base coach knows is "the windmill"
I wouldn’t think others teams would be able to tell the difference.

Stealing in general seems to be a big problem
When they’re on the bases, they’re all Rickey Henderson.
When we are on the bases, we’re sitting ducks.

That Miller Lite

nothing worse than
the “i think i’m super hot even though i’m a 6 at best so i think i’ll be sassy” girl
"Staying up to watch the 10 o'clock Olds? This just in--Go to bed."
Throwing to first
Helton hasn’t tried to steal a base in over a year.
Did they just now figure out there is a righty in between the lefties?
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Letting your RH starting pitcher face two lefties for the fourth time tonight
Great idea.

Eh, who cares?
For anyone here that’s graduated high school, do you remember second semester of your senior year? All of the colleges already accepted you so nothing you did really mattered anymore. May as well let the kid build the character!
Carlos Gonzalez
Guy is having a heck of a year, but without Coors field, he’s just okay.
Home: 1.144 OPS
Away: .719 OPS
He’s your run of the mill Rockies OF.

It was fun while it lasted though
Dammit though, that wouldn’t have even been that bad if they didn’t bring Yo back out. He labored through those 7 innings, I just didn’t have a good feeling about bringing him back out.

Tonight was his tenth appearance on zero days rest.
He’s allowed a 4.15 ERA in those games.
All other games: 2.12 ERA.

This game seems to be simultaneously following the script
Of every Brewers game since 2007 and every Rockies game since 2007.
This game isn't over till it's over

If you are scoring at home
Bob Uecker’s scorecard doesn’t have the new center fielder either.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Backup catcher sighting!

Kottaras in the on-deck circle?
but you NEVER under ANY circumstances use your backup catcher!

The worst thing he could do here is actually tie the game
Then there will be no backup catcher but more innings to play.

and isn't counsell our emergency 3rd backup?

No, McGehee
Doesn’t matter anyway. This one’s over.
by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 13, 2010 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions
I thought there was a game earlier this year where they said Counsell was the emergency catcher
Maybe I’m making it up, but I recall thinking it made some sense because McGehee had that knee surgery.
