3rd place magic number
When will we be able to easily figure out what the Brewers Magic Number will be for locking up 3rd place? Since we that is the best we could hope for this year I thought it would be fun to have a 3rd place magic number but being the most math challenged person here I was hoping one of you math guys could make it work :) Hey Pags is it ok to put this here?

Thanks for the shout-out :P
In any case, yeah it’s fine. But, I thought based on the title you already did the calcs.
But in any case, it depends on what you mean by “locking up 3rd place.” Do you mean 3rd place or better? or guaranteed third place only?
Is it going to make a difference?
By the time the Crew are guaranteed to be better than fourth, they’re almost certainly also guaranteed to be worse than second.
Nice
It’s still a little early for Magic Numbers. It would be something like 40 games right now. Just as relevant would be the Magic number for finishing above the Cubs.
Re: Pags, at 11.5 games under .500 the “or better” isn’t likely to play into this.
the reds or the cards could limp from here to the finish line
which I think would have SOME influence on a magic number.

I think we should have a magic number for 5th place.
We could put it on Nullact’s “suck it Pittsburgh” pennant.

I like this idea
"I've been banging a lot of bratwurst lately".
Uecker during the 8th inning of his first game back
It is 39
The best record the Astros could have is 95-67. The Brewers would need to win 39 out of the next 41 in order to be guaranteed 3rd place.
If they do this, they will probably win the division. This is why we don’t talk about magic numbers until they are around 5.
magic numbers include astro losses, though.
so it’s 39 = Brewers Wins + Astro Losses

True
But a “magic number” is the number of wins a team needs to guarantee their spot. It is the “control your own destiny”
In other words: the Brewers have to win 39 games to be absolutely guaranteed 3rd place.

I've always thought of it in terms of W/L
Magic Number has meant to me wins by my team vs. losses by the team chasing me. Mathematically it’s the same to say the number of wins necessary to guarantee I finish in front of that team. It’s more interesting to couch it in terms of W/L, in my opinion.
Go Reds! (This signature applies only through the 2010 regular season)
Correct. This is the way I've always seen it in newspapers and such.
You could say it in a way that means if we win this many, we’re safe, but that’s just semantics. I look at it as # of wins + number of rival’s losses, and I think most people do.

Thanks Brian so Brewers win 20 Astros lose 20 we lock up third
and can look down from our Apt in Mediocreville at the Cubs who will be homeless on Loser St ;)
