I wouldn't be surprised to see a Weeks extension announced sometime this year...
Apparently they have been discussing an extension with Weeks already.
that leaves them with no cash to spare for pitching help
unless they sign him for under what they think he’ll get in arb this year and backload the contract to hell. ie, pay him 500K for 2011 and 12M for 2012
I think limiting the cash prevents DM from doing bad things...
like signing Suppan-like contracts.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Perhaps
Though with Weeks a FA after next year, I think its more likely he goes than McGehee, who is cheaper.
Obviously lots could happen, I’m just speculating. Maybe Lawrie is traded for pitching this offseason so the Brewers can make their 2011 run towards the playoffs….
Get a ife broseph
I hope not.
They’re nowhere close to making the playoffs next year.
My goodness.

Agreed.
I think Gamel slides in at first, they extend Weeks, and now Lawrie / Fielder are the trade chips.
Yup. I think they've come to realize that the only way they get a stud young pitcher is if they give up a stud
young hitter.
Years of control for years of control.
http://www.mlbsoup.com
Which brings me back to my origional argument for not trading Lawrie
We have several pitching prospects, theyre just two or three years away. We don’t have any good hitting prospects other than Lawrie and maybe Cain.
My goodness.
by BrewHaHeather on Aug 2, 2010 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions
Tha'ts what Fielder is for.
We can’t get the pitching that we want from fielder, so they’ll flip him for a Lawrie-esque player, and flip Lawrie for a good pitcher.
Since teams are less willing to part with young pitching, they’ll maximize their return that way.
I don’t know if that’s actually how it works, but it seems to be trending that way.

"The club was so down on Hart, it did not submit his name for all-star consideration in fan balloting."
Alternatively, “The club did not start him on Opening Day.”
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Alternatively alternatively,
“Hart couldn’t beat out a 40-year-old who’d been out of baseball for a year for a starting spot.”

Maybe he took a little less money for this extension he apparently desperately wanted

:-(
If you believe Hart really found something this year and you’re going to get 30 HR out of him every year, then it’s a good contract (TH estimates around $25 million / 3 years). If we’re being pessimistic, we’ll point out that our dipsh*t GM just bought high on his own player. Again. We’ll point out that he gave exactly the same kind of contract to Bill Hall. Yeah, I said it. We’d point out that he couldn’t find a trade partner for Hart, because he was looking for a package of players valued at over $25 million performance over the next 3 years.
If the Brewers don’t get a substantial haul for Fielder, it will be the final straw and I will stop following this team closely until Doug Melvin is terminated. There is no hope at all that they will ever compete again with him at the helm. Mark A’s willingness to sign off on this contract is a strong indicator that he will retain Melvin for the foreseeable future.
The silver lining to all of this is that it’s an indication that they’ve given up on Gomez. The natural move would’ve otherwise been to move Cain or Gomez to right field. This could be Gomez’ last year as a starting outfielder at the major league level.
Well, I definately agree with you that Doug Melvin is a big problem with this team, but I’m not going to quit on this team because of the management. Come on man!
Yeah, I’m not a supporter in this contract. Hopefully Hart stays consistent to warrant this contract.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Cain is ready to be brought up. He should be in the MLB right now, not AAA. That does leave Gomez on the hot seat. Too bad because he’s all we got out of trading JJ Hardy. So much for that trade, eh?
"No player is greater than a team."

I don't think Cain or Gomez would be moved to RF.
Isn’t RF a power-hitting position?
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
only if you've got someone else in mind to take on that power-hitting role, of course
power hitting 1Bmen are a dime a dozen. Power hitting outfielders are SLIGHTLY more rare and harder to obtain. Not much, but slightly:P
fair enough
but I’d argue why bother shifting hart to 1B to put Gamel in the outfield and take the hit of two people learning new positions? why not just put gamel directly at 1B where he doesn’t have to throw often?
As to Lawrie – I agree that he might make a good RF. But he’s more than 1 year out from the bigs and has potential at 2B still.

Obviously since they’ve extended Hart, no one is going to be moved to RF.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Sucks?
I don’t think so. As long as he continues to lay off that low-outside pitch i’ll take him. Plus this just extends his tradability time. It’s pretty much a win-win for everyone.
If Corey thinks this is the level he SHOULD be playing at (or at least close) the brewers will have an all-star outfielder for 3 more years and Corey will cash in even bigger on the FA market in 3 years.
Now, if he regresses to last year… then its gonna suck. But don’t forget he started to get going pretty good before his appendix exploded.
Someone who is smarter than me needs to do one of those “Player A-Player B” comparisons to someone similar. But just writing that opens the door to some ridiculous comparison…
He bought Bill Hall at his peak value
Hall’s contract is/was for less per year than Hart’s will be, but the circumstances surrounding the contract are similar. Hall hit 35 HR and OPS’ed .899 in 2006. If Hall kept up that level of productivity then it would’ve been a great contract, especially given his versatility in the field. Is Hart going to regress as badly as Hall has? I sure hope not, but his past history indicates that it’s at least a possibility.
The Bill Hall contract is a fair comparison.
while the peak value idea is similar
Hart and Hall can’t be compared because Corey also has had two good seasons, ‘07 and ’08, before having a good first half. I’m more comfortable giving an extension to Hart compared to Hall who just had one breakout year.
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
My point exactly
He’s shown the capability of being good, but not necessarily the sustainability. Would the extension have been impossible in the offseason after we get 2 more months? Melvin is gambling on a big 2nd half to make this look good.
Hall
Actually, had a decent 2005…
.291/.342/.495 w/ 17 HRs and 18 SBs.
Granted, it pales in comparison to his 2006, but I don’t think people would’ve been nearly as upset with Hall if he would’ve put up those kind of numbers.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I don't think it's ridiculous...
Corey hasn’t shown a magically increased patience – it’s more been that the opposing pitchers have stopped throwing sliders to him for some unknown reason. Probably trying to sucker DM into signing Hart for longer to hamstring the brewers a bit:P
Hart has a massive hole in his game offensively and doesn’t have the defensive versatility that Hall did. In other words, I believe Hall will have more career value than Hart, despite the fact that he sucks.
If I were playing sandlot baseball, I’d pick Hall for my team.
Confused as to how anyone can judge this signing without the terms.

Buying high
The timing is the questionable part at this moment. We can pick apart the details later.
The fact that you say “buying high” implies you think that DM overpaid, which, again, we can’t judge.
http://www.twitter.com/mykenk
Well, the assumed value is between $20-25 million, according to Jordan Schelling
So it’s three years somewhere between $6.75 and $8.5 million per.
Now that's great tasting chicken!

Yeah, as long as this isn’t too much money and as long as it doesn’t preclude a Weeks deal, I’m fine with it. If the contract is an untradeable one like Hall’s or Soup’s, then there’s a problem.
Going to have to get a lot for Prince, though.

More likely 7/8.5/10
They’re all about those increased pay each year :)
And if you look at it like that, even if this deal doesn’t work out, that’s not the worst contract to try and get rid of. Hart, despite his struggles, has not hit below .265 in a full season.

the rumored terms are 3/ $25M
Which upsets me. But I also don’t understand any of the timing. If it’s better to trade players in the offseason, as DM insists, isn’t it better to sign them to extensions then, too? Especially if they played significantly better in the first half than expected and just injured their thumb? Corey seemed keen to extend, so are you telling me this offer wouldn’t have been accepted in a couple months?

Perhaps I'm missing something here.
I’m curious why most people would be ok with a Rickie Weeks contract extension (I include myself in this category), but not Corey Hart. Both are having career years, both have a tendancy to be very frustrating players to watch, both are questionable defensively and rather streaky players. Weeks playes a more valuable position, unlike Hart. Hart has a better record of success, unlike Weeks.
FWIW, I’m skeptical of this deal too, I just have a tendancy to play devil’s advocate.
My goodness.
I think the thought is that both are having a breakout year, but this is closer to what people expect out of Weeks. Plus with the injuries the chance would still be there to buy low. Or at least buy not-high.
Weeks was a high draft pick
and has been trending upward over the course of his time with the Brewers.
Hart has been bouncing around between greatness and suck. I have more faith in Weeks’ trend than hoping that Hart stays on God mode.
I was just going to say that
plus Weeks is far less streaky than Hart. Has Weeks ever been cold this year??

2007 and 2008 didn’t seem like upward trends.

I figured this was the main argument for Weeks in favor of Hart.
And I would rather they sign Weeks too. But who’s to say that Weeks will hit 20 homers next year? At least Hart has done it before.

by BrewHaHeather on Aug 2, 2010 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions
Not a given that Weeks hits 20 homers next year, for sure.
But my point was: there aren’t many 2Bs who even have the POTENTIAL to do so.
SRS BSNS
They are similar players offensively
Hart has a career .349 wOBA vs .351 wOBA for Weeks. The difference is that over that Weeks is turning himself into a league average 2B while Hart is a butcher in a corner outfield spot. On top of that, that offensive production is more valuable from 2B because its difficult to find it there, whereas you expect more from corner outfielder, especially one as poor defensively as Hart.
I'm thinking they switch him to first next season?

he sucked at first in the minors, according to reports
what makes you think he’ll learn the position now? And what makes you think he’ll OPS enough to justify keeping him there, when they could trade/sign a non-athletic player to play 1B that can rake just as easily?
you figure between him and gamel he's the more prototypical first basemen
granted not all of the power is there, but he’s playing better than our 1st basemen this season.
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
What makes him the more prototypical first baseman (without all the power)?
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
This sounds like a desperate attempt for Melvin to keep his job… Hopefully it works out for the Brewers though.
To put a finer point on it:
I think DM’s desperate attempt to keep his job comes this winter, when he signs some marginal free agent pitcher to a 3-year, $28 million deal, then gives an interview where he says something like: “Hey, I made an offer to Cliff Lee, but he rejected it. I’m hamstrung by the small-market finances, and players aren’t eager to come to Milwaukee. Look at them, don’t look at me.”
SRS BSNS
how could this be remotely construed as him trying to keep his job
and not him trying to f*ck us over for all time?
I like the signing
$26.5m for 3 years isn’t too much
I know everyone wants to compare him to Bill Hall but let’s be straight here there ain’t gonna be another player who regressed the way Hall did. He’s definitely an outlier on the regression scale. Hart should be fine.
All the “durrr guess we don’t need pitching” comments make no sense to me. Doesn’t this basically tell everyone they aren’t planning to sign Fielder? In that case I can see why they’d want to keep their new star hitter. I’d look for Weeks to sign quick too. Remember that Suppan, Hoffman, Hall, and probably Fielder are all gonna be off the books in ’11 so they can throw some money around

Right
Granted, the argument has been made that DM had his sights set incorrectly.
The only teams rumored to be interested in Fielder or Hart were playoff contenders. Unless one of them has quality starters, none of them were going to trade starting pitching for either of them (think “robbing Peter to pay Paul”).
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I think a good offer
does not necessarily mean a guy who can start right now. For Fielder, maybe, but not for Hart. A quality prospect in AAA or a few in lower levels would be a good offer. Whether or not he received such an offer is unknown, but I think his view of a “good offer” was far to narrow

I'm sort of nauseous.
He’s going to regress. We all know it. It’s just not possible (or at least highly unlikely) that these are sustainable production levels.
What I’m frustrated by is the fact that, once again, Melvin has cut a financial deal when the player’s value is at their absolute highest. It doesn’t seem like he’s managed to avoid that scenario all that much lately (with the exception of the Yoga signing).
I don’t think it means that Weeks is gone (and I’d rather have him around than Hart, personally). It almost certainly means that Fielder is gone (but we already knew that).
One interesting (though unlikely) possibility is that Hart finishes the season strong, is now under control for 3 more years at semi-reasonable prices (given his production this year) and his trade value might actually be a little higher this offseason.
Right? Right?!?!?! Or is the money so high it’ll counteract the years of control?

Please, tiny little infant baby Jesus. Please.

I think it makes him more attractive to potential trade partners
because they’ll know what it’s going to cost them.
After a season like he had last year, he won in arbitration and got a substantial raise. I can only imagine what he would have gotten this year after the season he’s had.
For an outfielder, after the season he’s had to this point, 6.5-8MM a year is pretty cheap to other teams. If he doesn’t get traded, the Brewers still aren’t totally screwed like they might be if he doesn’t regress as much as many expect him to.

ummm Hart's value based on this season is way more than 8.5m/year

True.
But that’s assuming that you can find someone willing to buy that he’ll continue to produce at this level. So far the number of opposing GM’s willing to acknowledge that possibility appears to be 0.

i don't think that's fair to say
they were willing to bet more in the people that they had in their organization that Doug Melvin placed equal value on to Hart than on Hart himself.

Ok...
… but they’re far less likely to have reached the conlcusion that they’d rather keep the guys they have IF they actually thought Hart had found himself and his production since May isn’t an aberration.

They did sign Braun to that long-term deal, too
So yay, I guess.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
They did.
And it’s a great contract for the team. But I didn’t think it qualified as “lately”.
Fair point though.

Ah, I don't remember when it was signed
I was just looking at it this morning though, I wonder how Braun will react to being paid less than Hart (money talks more than service time I’d wager).
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
I don't think he cares
Braun is making less than 13 other players on the roster this season… including Counsell and Gerut.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Not much to complain about this year!
Plus, he has apparel and restaurants to keep him busy when his baseball is getting him down. Sadly, all Hart has to worry about is focusing on baseball. Poor guy.
You forgot Hart's job at Arbys.

Ever
Its a team friendly deal financially, but why?
As others have noted, probably means Weeks perhaps isnt extended, although he is the one more worthy. He’s being bought high, and it means you have nowhere for 2 of the rising, cheap prospects to play once they are ready (Lawrie/Gamel/Cain).
It just makes me wonder even more now if Attanasio is the one pulling the strings on this.
Cain plays center
Gamel plays first
Lawrie gets traded for pitching (or they don’t extend Weeks and he plays second)
Valuable?
nobody wanted Hardy! Gomez was literally the best they could have gotten
captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee
Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.
I don’t know about that. We could have moved Hardy for prospects, but Dougs MO is “Major league talent”.. and that’s what he got.
He also didn’t wait for the GM meeting, it was like he was in a rush. He called the Twins.. “I’ll take Span. No. Ok I’ll take Cuddyer. No.. ahh.. yeah I guess we’ll take Gomez”.
So youre all for the one good year
followed by 5 really bad ones?
If you trade Lawrie for a rental, that is what happens. And unless you sign Cliff Lee this offseason as well, you still have the threat of a non contending team.
I'm personally all for world series now

I dont think the Rays would give up Hellickson
For another prospect.
They have the same issue that the Brewers do as far as cost controls.
They might give up Shields or Garza for Lawrie, but I would be shocked if they gave up a guy with 6 years of service time still under control, when that guy can slide right into the rotation and be just as good, or even better than the player he is replacing but becoming increasingly expensive.
I would rather have Lawrie, honestly.
Ryan Braun: He loves it.

Of course he's going to regress
If we didn’t expect him to, we would be paying him $25m a year. So I don’t necessarily think we’re buying high here – buying high IMO would be extending him at this point next season after he’s matched this year’s production, and giving out a contract like Alex Rios and Vernon Wells.
The money is fine, he’ll probably earn most of the contract in a year and a half. Whether or not we need him is another question, but at the very least, its one less position to worry about.
by richardhkirkando on Aug 3, 2010 7:21 AM CDT up reply actions
if he matches production year after year
we’d be buying middle-of-the-road. ie, his true worth.
If we buy now at rates that suggest he won’t regress, then we’re buying high. I think that’s exactly what we’re doing here.
$25M/yr? How many players are making that? Is Hart’s production that awesome? I would think you’d need to be OPSing about 1.600 and be an above-average fielder for that to happen. Or be paid by the yanks.
Hart can see this year!
I think something important that no one is talking about is that Hart is wearing contacts this year. The guy was hitting a baseball, the hardest thing to do in sports, without seeing the spin on the ball. This year, he puts in contacts, doesn’t look as terrible on the low and outside breaking pitches, and is having a career year. I don’t think this is a coincidence. He may have finally taken the next step this year.
I think this is a valid point
add in the fact that he’s dropped his hands about 4-6 inches and all of the sudden he’s hitting the crap out of the ball. I don’t think it’s coincidence.
"The Milwaukee Brewers' line score is starting to resemble an international phone number" - Pittsburgh Pirates Radio during 20-0 shutout - 4-22-10
I brought up the whole contacts thing previously, but it just got lost among the other posts.
Is he wearing contacts? During spring training, it was in the news constantly, but as soon as the season started, it went away.
Initially, I thought he said that he was against contacts and was going to give goggles a try.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
was it ever confirmed
that he’s wearing contacts now?
I remember the spring training deal where he didn’t want to wear contacts, but rather goggles, but it took forever for the goggles to arrive. Then he decided he didn’t like them, and basically said “screw it, I can see okay”
by PagsBrewCrew on Aug 2, 2010 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions
Pretty sure he is wearing contacts
And it is a pretty valid point to bring up. He said his vision was getting bad in 2008 and 2009, where he regressed a lot, then said he needed glasses, got em, and now is back to hitting and has been able to pick up on the slider.
It really doesn’t seem like an unmovable contract either if it doesn’t work out. This isn’t another Hall, he’s actually had more than one year of real production. He can always have the label as “bounceback candidate” now if he has a down year.

fair enough
I’m slightly more optimistic now, but not so much so that I embrace this contract
by PagsBrewCrew on Aug 2, 2010 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions
It's fair to point out that Hart has had more than one good year...
… (or at least good 2-3 months stretches in more than 1 year), which is different than Hall (if memory serves). To me the comparison is apt because we’re giving him a boat load of money when he’s at his most productive, which is exactly what we did with Hall.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Aug 2, 2010 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions
He's only 28
Odds are that he’s playing at his best, but he is still relatively young for baseball. He could still be more productive than this year. Coming into this year, nobody expected this out of him and we all would have said that he peaked.
True.
But even if his regression doesn’t take him back to the disaster he was for much of last season it still makes this contract look significantly worse.

If I'm deciphering the rambling correctly...
I think he wants Hart to end up like Hall (a career year followed by seasons of crap). I can’t tell why he wants that (particularly if he’s a Brewers fan), other than to prove that he was right.
I think he’s just here killing time until the Packers’ season starts.
