Game Thread #112: Astros (47-62) at Brewers (52-59)
Houston Astros at Milwaukee Brewers, Aug 8, 2010 1:10 PM CDT
♫ It's the most wonderful time of the week.♫ Happy Yovani-day everybody!
Follow the jump for all the usual bits and pieces.
Yovani Gallardo (10-5, 2.71) is a mac daddy. He strikes out people like nobodies business (10.12 K/9), has his walks cut down by almost one less per nine innings from last year, doesn't give up many homeruns (0.43/9) and has a 2.75 FIP (4th in MLB for starting pitchers), a 3.32 xFIP (sixth) and a 3.78 tRA. Also, he might be the best hitting pitcher in the league. So it's a pretty exciting thought that the Brewers have the rights to Yo through 2015.
Wesley Wright (1-1, 4.44) has appeared in nine games (three starts) so far this year, and has been mediocre at best. His K/9 and BB/9 numbers look pretty good at 7.52 and 2.39, respectively, but the Brewers must be licking their lips when they see his 2.05 HR/9. He also has a 5.42 FIP on the season, with a 4.01 xFIP and 5.94 tRA. Then again, all these numbers are in a pretty small sample size of 26.1 innings. But his career numbers in 126.2 innings aren't a whole lot better. Hopefully nothing clicks for him tonight.
Lineup (Cain!):
Weeks 4
Hart 9
Fielder 3
Braun 7
McGehee 5
Cain 8
Escobar 6
Lucroy 2
Gallardo 1
Bullpen Report:
Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 inning (8 pitches) yesterday and also pitched Friday.
Kameron Loe pitched .2 innings (11 pitches) yesterday and also pitched Friday.
Todd Coffey pitched .1 innings (3 pitches) yesterday and also pitched Friday.
Zach Braddock pitched .1 innings (5 pitches) yesterday.
David Riske pitched 1.1 innings (31 pitches) Wednesday.
LaTroy Hawkins pitched .1 innings (24 pitches) Wednesday.
Chris Capuano pitched .1 innings (5 pitches) Wednesday.
John Axford pitched 1 inning (16 pitches) Tuesday.

Might have been noteworthy to mention.....
That in his last start Wesley Wright gave up 2 runs in 7 IP and got the win against the Brewers.
Yikes...
Jeff Bagwell looks like he should be a character on “Deadwood”. Probably an enforcer.

It looked like he took a swing at first, but I’m guessing the 1st base umpire was rolling his eyes on that one.

This is such a fine example of the Brewers 2010.
Hey, we won a game in the bottom of the 9th. Hey, look at that, we won a second well played game, Got a decent start from Wolf, and Prince is coming around. Hey we’ve got Yo going tomorrow! We can sweep these guys.
Hey, why is everything Yo threw in the first inning right down the middle of the plate?
Ah well. At least it’s only 2 runs.

If Edmonds wasn't hurt...
… I’d pick him. It would be an easier sell to other players (because he’s got veteran grittiness), and if he’s taking the time to walk all the way to the mound on that bad achilles, someone’s getting tuned up.

I think he thought about it.
But that certainly didn’t appear to be intentional, not that it would have mattered had it actually hit him.

Maybe it's just because he's so tall, but Hart's swing always looks so long as opposed to being more compact.
It's his height and his correspondingly long arms.
I’ve always been the surprised that he does as well as he does with inside pitches. With arms like that, you’d think you’d be able to bust him inside and he’d have a hard time getting his bat around in time.
