Me too
If nothing else, it means that Cain is going to stay with the team for the rest of the season and playing time.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Those were my initial reactions, but
now instead of JEd taking playing time, C Dick will.

Hard to say.
If the Brewers were seriously considering him for CF next season I could believe it. I’m thinking he’ll be more like a 4th OF. He’ll get his playing time, but I don’t think it should be a platoon situation. Granted, what I think and what Macha and Melvin thinks are sometimes completely different things.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I don't quite get the point of this deal.
Other than to have a 4th outfielder under control for the next few years.
My goodness.
Why?
Does this mean that the CarGo experiment is over. Is Jody Gerut done? I am not saying it is bad, just don’t get the fit…

Options going forward
Edmonds wasn’t coming back, why not have another guy to look at for next year?
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.

Exactly. Gerut isn't coming back either.
A cheap lefty fourth/fifth OF is exactly what they needed.

It doesnt look like he was on the 40 man for the Reds
That means that he doesn’t have to be on the Brewer’s 40 man right?
If so who gets put on it?

He was on the Reds' 60-day DL
I assume Dickerson will be activated and take the spot vacated by Edmonds.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gomez's return is delayed until Sept. 1

Question: (cross post)
@craigcalcaterra: Why wouldn’t the Cards have blocked waivers? Edmonds makes the Reds better. Too much history for the Cards to risk actually getting him?
http://www.twitter.com/mykenk
My guess:
If the Cards claim him and don’t want him, they look like jerks in Edmonds, and their fans eyes. They probably thought it’d be better to stay out of it than risk having news that they claimed him and didn’t want to work out a deal leak through the media.
http://www.mlbsoup.com
So who is Chris Dickerson?
Good move on the behalf of the Crew to get what they could from Edmonds however. To be honest I hated the guy for years considering how badly he’s destroyed the Crew. But I’m really amazed by the determination and results he’s had even at 40. GL edmonds

Good, cheap move
Gerut had been falling out of favor, Gomez has been disappointing, and we weren’t going anywhere this season with Edmonds trying to give his last big hoorah.
Dickerson isn’t a prospect for anything, but he was good as 4th OF for the Reds last year, worth looking at going forward and under control for the next couple years.

It's not exactly a big sample size
But here are Dickerson’s UZRs in the OF for his career:
LF: 4.3
CF: 47.9
RF: -3.2
UZR is cumulative, but those numbers are his career UZR/150 (rate stat)

Sheehan's comment:
Reds traded Chris Dickerson for Jim Edmonds today. Makes them a bit better, since they’ll play Edmonds and they wouldn’t have played Dickerson once he got healthy. Don’t hate it for Brewers, who get some LH OBP and OF defense for, basically, free. He’s a nice match with Gomez in CF.
Get a ife broseph
Help me out with this one
I’m a Reds fan, and overall I think this was a positive move for us. Edmonds usually seems to play well against the Reds, and hopefully he can do it against other teams while wearing a wishbone C. He has the veteran presence the Reds love, and big game experience that will be needed in this pennant race. Does he still have anything left in the tank, or is Walt Jocketty just getting the band back together (Scott Rolen, Miguel Cairo, Russ Springer, even Aaron Miles is still on our ledger).
Chris Dickerson is a nice player, and can be a real defensive asset, particularly in CF. He’s shown some good power, and has a nice OBP usually. The problem with him is that he seems to get hurt all the damn time. And when he was healthy, he seemed to be a bit of a whiner, or at least a little too unguarded in his public comments. Clubhouse cohesion seems to be a big factor for why the Reds are doing well this year, and Dickerson didn’t quite fit in.
To me, it doesn’t seem like a huge trade, but both teams get something a little bit better for their circumstances.
Doesn't really sound like you need any help
That pretty much sums it up.
http://www.twitter.com/mykenk
He's got some left in the tank.
I’m assuming he’ll play less than he was with the Brewers considering CarGo’s ineptitude, so if you can give him a bit to heal up he’ll probably play quite well down the stretch.
Our outfield has really been struggling lately
Jonny Gomes, Drew Stubbs, and Jay Bruce have all been struggling for at least a month. It’s to the point where Laynce Nix looks like a viable starting candidate. So in that regard, it will definitely be a bonus to be able to start a productive Edmonds out there, likely in a left field platoon, but possibly getting some time in center too. Chris Heisey has done very well as a rookie callup (and was the Reds minor league player of the year last year), but until Bruce and Stubbs especially figure things out, I don’t mind having Edmonds there.
I've been surprised at how well he can still hit.
Defensive and especially baserunning have been painful, but the man can still rake for a 40-year-old.
by Cheeseandcorn on Aug 9, 2010 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Sad to hear that about baserunning
The Reds have been extremely good at going first to third this year, but every other aspect of their baserunning has been pretty poor. Shame that Edmonds won’t help that. And we’ve also made our bones by having a good defense. Edmonds may have declined some, but I’d still wager he’s a better left field glove than Jonny Gomes.
totally disagree
No, he doesn’t run great, but his jumps are so good…he can legit still play CF at age 40. I believe his defensive metrics have been good.
Kyle gets mad when I post them
Plus I actually wanted to talk some baseball for a change. Maybe I can find one for you though…
Meh.
Even if Dickerson turns out to be useless, they’re adding to their credibility with aging veterans by keeping their unspoken promise to Edmonds and getting him to a contender for late in the year. I’m not in love with the deal, but they weren’t going to get much for him, and this way they have the appearance of keeping their word and treating him with respect.
Assuming Edmonds doesn’t come out this afternoon saying they enver consulted with him and he didn’t want to go to Cincy.
Besides. This way he gets a chance to screw the Cards.

by thefreewheelin76 on Aug 9, 2010 1:22 PM CDT reply actions
The downside...
is that if Dickerson is going to be on the roster next year they’ll need to make a choice between having a 12-man pitching staff, getting rid of Gomez or Inglett for someone who can backup shortstop, or having Inglett be the backup at short.
I don't see Gomez and Cain being on the same roster to start the season.
Inglett can play IF and OF, so I think he sticks around.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I would assume Craig Counsel will not be with the team next year
so they’ll be looking for another guy to back up SS, anyway. Maybe they’ll be sending Inglett to shortstop school. He’s already logged 3 games there in his career so I’m sure he’s fine!
I doubt it
They’ll probably pick up another veteran SS. Of course, they could always bring up Cruz or Olmedo.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Let's cross that bridge when we get there
He hasn’t even played one game yet. As far as I’m concerned though, Gomez can work on his swing in the minors.

Unless they move Hart to 1B if/when Fielder is traded.
Or unless they think that Gamel’s more marketable to teams that think they can hide him in RF and avoid all the defensive mayhem at 3b.
I don’t think either scenario is very likely (especially when they could just plug Gamel in at 1B if Fielder is dealt), but they’re at least possible.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Aug 9, 2010 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Moving Hart to 1B just doesn't make sense to me
More than likely it’ll be Gamel plugged in there. His defense at 3rd isn’t awful, apparently his big issue isn’t fielding but rather throwing (as we saw with a couple nice plays diving stops during his stint).
Heck, 1B might be the best thing that will happen to him. Less worrying about making accurate throws and more on how to fix some of those holes in his swing.

Hart has played 1B
He was drafted, I think, as a 1st baseman. I believe he played there for a season in A ball until the Brewers drafted Fielder. In theory, at least, he wouldn’t have as much to learn at first base as Gamel would. There’s also an argument to be made that Hart’s defense in RF is never going to get better than it is and it’s not very good right now. Hart is also really tall which makes me a “bigger target” as the saying goes.
By 2012, Gamel could worse or better than Hart is in right field, but I wouldn’t be as worried as many others to see them both trying new positions next year if it means having both of their bats in the lineup.
But...
Changing positions could affect Hart’s hitting (if you buy into the Hall rationale).
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
I buy the Hall rationale
when we’re talking about a guy moving to one of the most crucial positions on the field, when he’s never played that position before.
When it’s somebody going from one relatively unimportant defensive position to another, not so much.

Hall actually benefited from moving to one of the most crucial positions on the field

It’s not like they were all real close though, like if Fielder or Hart had been traded where they’d all been playing together for years. I hope it isn’t true. Maybe Braun’s text message was something vague like a rumor he’d heard. There are plenty of rational reasons Braun knew before C-Dick’s agent knew.
Who says they consulted with him?
I just assumed Braun found out before C-Dick did. Not a big deal.

I'm guessing DB (Deputy Braun) wanted to let Edmonds know before finalizing the deal with Jocketty.
so he told C. Dick that there was a chance he could be coming to MKE before Jocketty could officially tell him.

I’ll hire you people as my GM when I win the lottery, buy the team, donate it to the city, but remain chief executive… (snap)
Anyway, nice thread.

Oh, wait. I'd have to win ten lotteries to buy a franchise. ;-)

I love this Old Vegas comment on the trade
Now our best hitter of the bench is joe inglett followed by craig counsell, kottaras and now this dickerson guy. meaning is we need a late inning bomb, its yovani to the rescue.
Joe Inglett’s pinch-hitting splits this year: .326/.426/.543
Craig Counsell’s pinch-hitting splits this year: .290/.371/.323 (so no “late-inning bombs,” but the man can the load bases for one)
George Kottaras’ overall line this year (since he’ll never be pinch-hitting): .200/.320/.438
And Dickerson is 2-7 pinch-hitting this year with a single and a triple.
Yup, looks like that bench is ground zero for the Brewers’ struggles this year.

I disagree with the process, but I agree with the conclusion.
I’d love to see Yovani in some more early inning PH situations.

Can hurt
how pissed would you be if he re-injured his knee rounding first in a PH role?
I know he hurt it in the field the first time and I am not against using him to pinch hit, just not constantly.

That's what I was thinking.
I’m fine with Gallardo PHing a bit more, but a PH at-bat in a lost season is the not the time to risk your franchise ace’s health.

Can't hurt?
Didn’t a reliever who hit against the Brewers end up going onto the DL recently?
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Dan Runzler hurt himself during his AB
Coffey hurt his thumb batting earlier this year.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
GAH.
Escobar 9
Counsell 6
Weeks 4
Fielder 3
McGehee 5
Cain 8
Inglett 7
Lucroy 2
Narveson 1
http://www.twitter.com/mykenk
yeah, wtf is up with that?
He’s finally hitting again. 8 game hitting streak or something like that?
I'm hoping this changes by game time
No reason to not give C-Dick a start if you’re benching 2 of the regulars.

WOW!!
I just noticed that! We’ve been talking about Gamel in RF. Gamel can slide into SS and Escobar can move into RF. Genius!
Clearly just setting Esky up
to play all 9 positions tonight in decreasing order. Nothing to see here.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
Hmmm
While I’m sure this isn’t actually the case, the lineup supports that with both Counsell and Inglett in the starting lineup to swap around positions.
Of topic: Counsell and Inglett both end with double consonants.
Don't forget smartass!
And baseball. Kind of ironic, hmm?

double Ls beats double Ts
anyone see “Man of the Year”
the movie was funny, but the plot made me want to gag.
The sticking point is shortstop (and 2B)
It works if we assume McGehee can play 1st base and C-Dick will be there by the 8th inning. Since only Counsell and Escobar can play shortstop Escobar has to pitch the 8th inning.
1st: Escobar starts in RF (9)
2nd: Escobar moves to CF (8); Cain moves to RF
3rd: Escobar moves to LF (7); Cain moves to CF; Inglett moves to RF
4th: Escobar moves to C (2); Lucroy exits; Hart comes in at RF; Inglett moves to LF
5th: Escobar moves to 2B (4); Weeks exits; Kottaras enters at C
6th: Escobar moves to 3B (5); Fielder exits; McGehee moves to 1B; Inglett moves to 2B; Braun comes in LF
7th: Escobar moves to 1B (3); McGehee moves to 3B
8th: Escobar moves to P (1); current pitcher exits; McGehee moves to 1B; Braun moves to 3B; Dickerson moves to LF
9th Escobar moves to SS (6); Counsell exits; Axford enters to close the game
No one plays in a 100% unfamiliar position with McGehee at 1st and Braun at 3rd being the most questionable moves (Escobar, aside).

Oh.
McCalvy says that C-Dick won’t be in Milwaukee until 5, so maybe the lineup changes if he makes it here on time?
http://www.twitter.com/mykenk
so...
I assume that means that cain gets CF, dickerson LF, Inglett RF, escobar SS, Counsell bench?
Or will they do something mind numbingly dumb like dropping Weeks and shifting Inglett from RF to second, leaving Esky in the outfield?

Does anyone have a time machine handy?
How many people would’ve given up on the season out of Spring Training if they knew this would be the starting lineup On August 9?
the economy would be doomed for several more years
better things like this come gradually.
Imagine the entire state of Wisconsin without any men over the age of 14.
4th catcher?
perhaps at the start of ST. Not that played in the reg season or was set at the end of spring training. Zaun, Kott, Lucroy.
I count Salome as 3rd since he was on the 40-man on April 1
Lucroy was not.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
okay.
I know salome was the starter at AAA and Lucroy at AA, but I thought that was more political than anything.
Is Salome dropped from the 40 man yet?
That is officially the weirdest Brewers lineup I can recall seeing.

There’s a reason it’s a “Monday lineup” and not a “Sunday lineup”.
Hell, if you were out the door at the end of the season, wouldn’t you make a lineup one day while you were drunk?

I tried this on my softball team two weeks ago
just had everyone rotate every inning, and I pitched the first
it did not go well. at all.
Move everybody up three so Inglett can pitch
Escobar 3
Counsell 9
Weeks 7
Fielder 6
Cain 2
Inglett 1
Lucroy 5

Fielder at SS, hm…

"Available" isn't completely true
Braun and Hart are available to PH in high leverage late innings AB. Otherwise, be prepared to see a relief pitcher go up there without a bat tonight. Brewers playing with 25-26 outs tonight boys!
I bet gamer Dave Bush would play LF in a pinch
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
That is true
We have a pinch runner available. He’s nearly guaranteed to score, too, so Macha will have to choose wisely when to use him.
