Gamethread #136: Brewers (62-73) at Phillies (78-58)
Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 5, 2010 12:35 PM CDT
This will be the Brewers last game against the Phillies this season.
Follow the jump for more.
Randy Wolf (10-10, 4.76) is pitching for the Brewers today. Randy Wolf is an anagram of Lady Frown, which I would imagine describes a lot of the female viewing audience when they have watched him pitch this year.
Kyle Kendrick (9-7, 4.72) has probably been pitching worse than his ERA suggests. His FIP is 5.10, his xFIP is 4.83 and his tRA is 5.92. He strikes out few, walks some and gives up some homeruns. In 154.1 innings he has hit just two batters.
Lineup:
2B Weeks
RF Hart
LF Braun
1B Fielder
3B McGehee
CF Cain
SS Escobar
C Kottaras
LHP Wolf
Bullpen:
Todd Coffey faced three batters (8 pitches) Wednesday, and also pitched on Tuesday.
Jeremy Jeffress pitched 1 inning (11 pitches) Wednesday.
Mike McClendon faced two batters (6 pitches) Wednesday.
Manny Parra pitched 2 innings (32 pitches) Tuesday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched .2 innings (17 pitches) Monday.
John Axford pitched 1 inning (13 pitches) Friday.
Kameron Loe pitched 0 innings (11 pitches) yesterday and also pitched on Friday.
Carlos Villanueva pitched 1 inning (26 pitches) yesterday.
Zach Braddock pitched 1inning (14 pitches) yesterday.

Of course it matters
We might be out of the playoffs, but we can still be the spoiler. How we play against the Phils may or may not ultimately determine whether Bobby Cox sees the playoffs in his final year.
It is my oldest B-day tailgate we do it every year(start them young get the Brewers sickness into them before they discover free will)
The big number 10 so win or lose it will be a fun time

Nice hit Prince
Someone needs to say it. Also, GJ fooling Ryan and Corey into getting on base first.
That Prince shot
was a monster smash.

Has Kendrick ever started against John Lannan?
There might be zero strikeouts for either team.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Once.
On July 31, 2008, Kendrick pitched 6.2 innings and struck out four batters and Lannan pitched 5.2 innings and struck out seven.
I see conversation is alive and well on here
Nice start for the Crew, I’m in a pretty good mood too after that Badger win last night.
Just wanna see the Brewers give us some hope for the future now, let’s get one today.

Or not
I’m guessing he, Lucroy, and Escobar will probably finish with fairly uninspiring numbers, but those are just rookie pains. Really like the core there and the focus on defense in their games, could be nice players to have the next few years.

In 7 games since being traded to the Phillies, Roy Oswalt is 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA, .99 WHIP, and is averaging almost a strikeout an inning.
Needless to say, I’m thinking this trade has worked out well for the Phillies.

Full quote from Yahoo Sports
"If he doesn’t want to be here next year, we need to figure out a way to get him out of here and find somebody that wants to be here and play," Pujols told Yahoo! Sports before Sunday’s game against the Reds. "That’s a reality.
"That’ll show you right there a young player that doesn’t respect what he’s got," he added. "He needs to find out the talent and ability that he has and pretty much keep his mouth shut and play the game. Let the organization make those decisions, not himself."
Only problem is that Rasmus didn’t say he wanted out.
Asked if he wants to be in St. Louis next year, he said: "I’m not going to say either way. I’m just going to come in and play hard every day."
Ahhh
More of Albert preaching about respect. For even questioning the laws of his holiness, Rasmus has been cast out from the Kingdom of Albert.
I think we’ve heard this story before. Rasmus will be banished to hell…I mean Wrigley, and then wage war on the Cardinals for all eternity.

They always seem to compare Prince to Howard
And then completely forget to mention that Howard is four years older.
They also seem to forget that Fielder is a much better hitter
His OBPs have been .339, .341, and .360 over the past three years. Fielder’s .372, .412, .402
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I was just looking up those numbers to post something similar
If Prince could get himself into the same shape as Howard, I think he’s hands down the more valuable player.

I’ll give Braun his due, he’s certainly not the best LF in the game, but for never playing the position before the majors, he handles himself alright out there.

Here's the link
Late in 2008, I had a superstition about making pumpkin pies on gamedays. Somehow, it made Sports Illustrated.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Well, that fall I was buying pumpkins from Gateway Market in Des Moines.
This fall, the Appleton Farmers’ Market.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
So what your saying is you need to make a road trip to Des Moines.
Buy a lot of pumpkins, freeze them (can you do that?), then make them before every game next year.
I've never frozen a whole pumpkin, because that'd take a ton of space
But you can cook down a pumpkin and freeze the glop…I froze about 25 pumpkins’ worth last year.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
So this is either Axford for a two inning save or Hoffman getting a shot at #600 on the road.
I’m not sure I like either of those.
Now that's great tasting chicken!
Or an unforeseen wrinkle..
Jeffress in for the 9th!

Unless they’re planning on replacing Ax mid-inning, there’s no need to start someone warming until the Brewers are up in the top of the 9th.

Random stat #2
You figure it out.
Randy Wolf’s monthly stats…
July:
6 G, 2-2, 38 IP, 40 H, 30 SO, 14 BB, .265 opp. avg., 5.45 ERA
August:
6 G, 3-1, 37 IP, 40 H, 24 SO, 14 BB, .282 opp. avg., 3.65 ERA

File under "This is why we don't judge pitchers by ERA"
LOB% in July: 59.2%
LOB% in August: 79.6%
I’d say the defense just really screwed him over in July.
Exactly
I’m a big fan of WHIP, but they’re identical in those months, so I was even more confused.
Think you can chalk it up to defense and just the situations each of those hits and walks came in. So many ways stats can be telling yet misleading.

Why not
3+ run lead, he’s had some 30 pitch outings before, they are at home so Hoffman will be available to save games for a couple days.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Because the bullpen has nine guys in it, so you shouldn't need to overwork one of the season's lone bright spots in a meaningless game?
