Three storylines came out of this game:
- Chris Narveson continued his hot streak. He pitched 7 solid innings giving up only two runs and striking out 9 Cardinals. He didn't even allow the hit until the fourth inning. It was in the fourth where he allowed both runs.
- Casey McGehee is made up for his defensive miscues yesterday by driving in three of the four Brewer runs today. He went 3-4 today and drove in both go-ahead runs in the fifth inning.
- The umpiring was... interesting tonight, particularly the umpiring of Bob Davidson. He ejected Cardinal pitching coach Dave Duncan, Ken Macha, Chris Dickerson, and a fan. Yes, a fan in the stands was thrown out by the home plate umpire.
Of course I wrote all of this before Trevor Hoffman came in to pitch. He gave up a lead off single to Colby Rasmus, but then got a double play and a ground ball from Aaron Miles for his 600th career save. It really was a special moment afterward, as the entire team and Hoffman's family came out onto the field to congratulate him. Hoffman was then carried off the field on the shoulders of Todd Coffey and Prince Fielder to revel in the glory of becoming the first pitcher to ever record 600 saves.

Really happy for Hoffman
He couldn’t have been more professional during the season and was highly supportive of Ax from the get go. Glad to see him get #600.

On a side note
Trevor Hoffman came in to my place of work and asked to use the employee bathroom. The back room mens bathroom has now officially been renamed the Trevor Hoffman Memorial Bathroom.
I just thought you all should know that.
My goodness.
I don't know
That name sort of suggests he met a grisly fate in there.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
I've been told the light in that bathroom has been burnt out for months.
So maybe something bad did happen as a result of the darkness.
My goodness.

Fun game
I feel rewarded for tuning in to a random Tuesday night game and getting to witness a fan ejection and Hoff’s 600th save. Add in Rock’s raspy voice on his birthday and the Statue Ken ejection and it really was entertaining.

Sadly
I wanted to go tonight’s game, but couldn’t find anyone to go with me. :(

I was hoping he would get the opportunity for #600 on Saturday
I got ticket for that game. But it was still pretty cool to watch it on TV.

600
Rivera is only 45 saves away. He’s 40, but still one of the best closers in the league. He’d probably only need one season to hit 600.
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
Guess he's going to need to break in a new one.
Although I’m sure he has a backup one ready to go.

I'll admit
I really wanted Trevor to retire earlier this season, but kudos to him for sticking it out. What a great moment and remarkable achievement for an all-around class act.
Fan ejection
A fan was kicked out of a Marlins game with about 400 fans in attendance because he was heckling the umpires (link w/awful headline). Byung-Hyun Kim struck out in the same game and a hot mic caught his expletive quite clearly.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
I remember hearing about that game
In that game, it looked like more of a case of the umpire doing what security/ushers should have done (well, if there had been more than 400 people there; remember that audible fool during a Brewers game a few weeks ago?)
Remember him? He's my father!
I was disappointed with the lack of hookers but the pancakes were delightful
I was struck by the fact BH Kim cursed in English
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Weird
The article indicates only 400 fans were in attendance, but yet the reported attendance was over 10,000 (link).
Are attendance figures based on sold tickets or the number of people who’ve come through the turnstyles?

They use tickets sold now
They used to use turnstile counts.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
The Hoff has been a class act all season
From his being willing to mentor Axford and being willing to pitch in what ever role the team asked him too. I am happy he was able to get to 600 and I hope he can retire and enjoy what was an outstanding and amazing career(just to clarify I mean retire after this season ends not tomorrow)

Oh and nice of ESPN to totally ignore save 600 on their website

So it's a wonder
that Rivera-watch hasn’t begun yet. Only 45 away!
/shaking head/
Brandon Phillips understands.
They're saving it for next season...
granted, at this point he’ll be a FA after this season (unless the Yankees resign him – which is likely).
Pujols is the Barack Obama of baseball.
You know...
that thought did cross my mind.
They could easily reuse the numbers and paste Rivera’s face over Hoffman’s.

Drunk
I was there. It was pretty awesome.
Yeah, well, sometimes I drink.

what happened
on the play where Corey was called safe then somehow was out? I found a video of the play, but all that was shown was hart being called safe then walking to the dugout. Smiling, of course.

Yep
that is correct. Bill was too busy throwing everyone else out.

So why is Narveson good?
It’s not like it’s his first time around the league so no one knows what his stuff is like. This consistency has really come out of nowhere. If it really is a matter of development, then some credit needs to go to Peterson as long as he’s getting some blame for the poor performances of the rest of the staff, too.

god i hope he stays that way

aside from a couple of stumbles
Narveson has been pretty good since Macha said they were going to call that game from the dugout. Maybe seeing the coaches call his pitches and seeing the effect on the hitters taught him something about himself, gave him a little confidence in using his strengths.
bizarre that espn.com doesn't even mention this on the front page...

It's got the front page picture on their MLB site and 3 links
It’s not that it isn’t covered. We just like to pretend baseball has fans once football season starts, but comparatively it’s barely a blip. It’s the week after college FB started and simultaneously the week before the NFL starts. What do you expect?

I didn't participate in the game thread last night
but looking at the ejection “highlights” on the MLB website, it looks like all three times the umps got the calls right… just seemed to be quick with the ejection trigger-finger.
That fan seemed to be pretty lit up too.

Congratulations to Hoffman
It’s always a great achievement to be the first to do something in baseball, and he did it like a pro. And kudos also to the Brewers organization for sticking with him and giving him the chance, despite having a down year. Nicely done, all around.
